Flexible Nailing of Pediatric Both Bone Forearm Fracture.

This is the case of a 12-year-old boy presented with a displaced radial and ulnar shaft fracture. Historically, these fractures were managed conservatively with closed reduction and cast immobilization; however, there has been an increasing trend toward operative fixation. Malalignment is an indication for operative fixation of pediatric both bone forearm fractures. Flexible nailing was performed in this case because of the small incisions, minimal tissue disruption, shorter operative time, and ease of implant removal. Five years postoperatively, the patient's fracture was healed. Patient pres

Sarcoidosis: nail dystrophy without underlying bone changes.

Sarcoidosis is a chronic granulomatous disease of unknown origin that affects multiple organs and may present with a variety of skin lesions. Involvement of the nails is rare and almost invariably associated with underlying bone disease. We describe a patient with sarcoid nail dystrophy in whom this diagnosis was confirmed by a proximal nail fold biopsy. Radiologic investigation did not show evidence of an associated bone dystrophy in this case.

Magnetic Intramedullary Lengthening Nails for Complex Lower Extremity Reconstruction: Functional Outcomes, Bone Healing, and Complications.

Background: Magnetically controlled intramedullary lengthening nails have become increasingly popular for lower extremity reconstruction because they reduce complications associated with external fixation and facilitate earlier rehabilitation. However, comprehensive data integrating deformity correction, bone healing, functional recovery, psychosocial outcomes, and complication-related analyses remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate the radiological, functional, psychosocial, and complication-related outcomes of magnetic intramedullary lengthening nails in patients undergoing complex low

Nails in osteoporosis and bone metabolism: a narrative review of current evidence and future directions.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis is a widespread public health problem, yet Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA)-the current diagnostic gold standard-has significant limitations, including high cost, radiation exposure, and inability to assess bone organic phase changes. As an easily accessible epidermal derivative, nails share high molecular homology with bone tissue and offer unique advantages of non-invasive collection and stable composition reflecting medium- to long-term metabolic status. This narrative review aimed to systematically collate the pathophysiological associations between nails and

Paediatric Long Bone Fractures Managed with Elastic Intramedullary Nails: A Retrospective Study of 30 Patients.

Elastic intramedullary nailing or titanium elastic nail (TEN) is an alternative method for the treatment of various pediatric long bone fractures. Titanium nails are preferred over plaster cast and stainless steel nails for children older than six years. Our series included 30 paediatric long bone fractures who were managed with TEN. The mean age was 9.3 years and the mean follow-up period was 28 months. A mean time of 10 weeks was recorded for the union of all fractures. The occurrence of superficial infection in three cases healed with antibiotics and minor debridement. Limb length discrepan

Intramedullary nailing for impending or pathologic fracture of the long bone: titanium vs carbon fiber peek nailing.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to compare titanium vs carbon fiber intramedullary (IM) nailing in terms of response to radiotherapy, local control of the disease, time of surgery, fluoroscopy exposure, and complications. METHODS: From 2015 to 2021, 52 impending or pathologic fractures were treated with IM nailing in 47 patients: 18 males and 29 females with a mean age of 73. Titanium nails were used in 27 cases: femur (17 cases), humerus (8 cases), and tibia (2 cases). Carbon fiber nails were used in 25 cases: femur (17 cases), humerus (7 cases), and tibia (1 case). RESULTS: At a mean fol

Plate-assisted Bone Segment Transport With Motorized Lengthening Nails and Locking Plates: A Technique to Treat Femoral and Tibial Bone Defects.

UNLABELLED: This article describes a new bone transport technique for femoral and tibial bone defects using lengthening nails combined with locking plates. We term it plate-assisted bone segment transport (PABST). METHODS: Nine patients with five femoral and four tibial bone defects from open fractures or malignancies were treated between 2016 and 2018. Mean femoral defect length was 9.3 cm (range 7 to 11.5). Mean tibial defect was 8.9 cm (range 4.8 to 15). The patients were evaluated for time to weight bearing, consolidation index, mechanical axis deviation, and limb length discrepancy. RES

Effect of bone grafting on bone union in exchange nailing for the treatment of femoral shaft nonunions.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the effect of bone grafting on the bone union in exchange nailing (EN) for the treatment of femoral shaft nonunions. METHODS: A total of 26 patients (16 male) were included in this study. The mean age of the patients was 36.1±9.3. Bone grafts were used in 8 patients (bone graft group), and EN was performed without bone grafting (no bone graft group) in 18 patients. Etiology, fracture type, location, and classification of the fractures at the time of initial injury were evaluated. The reduction type (open or closed) and locking status of the nails were

Single-Bone Intramedullary Nailing of Pediatric Both-Bone Forearm Fractures A Systematic Review.

Traditional operative management of unstable, pediatric both-bone forearm fractures is fixation of both ulna and radius. Literature suggests single-bone fixation with intramedullary nailing obtains good results and is less technically demanding and invasive. This systematic review evaluates the efficacy of single-bone intramedullary nailing of pediatric both-bone forearm fractures. Medline and Embase were searched for English-language primary studies published in peer-reviewed journals. Two independent investigators extracted data. Eleven papers met the criteria for inclusion. Overall, studies

Elastic intramedullary nailing and DBM-bone marrow injection for the treatment of simple bone cysts.

BACKGROUND: Simple or unicameral bone cysts are common benign fluid-filled lesions usually located at the long bones of children before skeletal maturity. METHODS: We performed demineralized bone matrix and iliac crest bone marrow injection combined with elastic intramedullary nailing for the treatment of simple bone cysts in long bones of 9 children with a mean age of 12.6 years (range, 4 to 15 years). RESULTS: Two of the 9 patients presented with a pathological fracture. Three patients had been referred after the failure of previous treatments. Four patients had large lesions with impendin

Comparing the Outcomes of Titanium and Stainless Steel Flexible Nails in Repairing Pediatric Long Bone Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, pediatric femoral fracture treatment favored conservative methods, relying on casting and the inherent bone remodeling ability in immature bones. Surgical intervention was deferred until age 6, as nonoperative approaches often resulted in complications. Titanium elastic nailing (TENS) emerged as an effective treatment for diaphyseal femoral fractures in ages 6 to 16. However, the choice between TENS and stainless steel elastic nailing (SSENS) remains debated due to inconsistent findings. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of both nailing syste

Radiographs of 366 removed limb-lengthening nails reveal differences in bone abnormalities between different nail types.

AIMS: Limb-lengthening nails have largely replaced external fixation in limb-lengthening and reconstructive surgery. However, the adverse events and high prevalence of radiological changes recently noted with the STRYDE lengthening nail have raised concerns about the use of internal lengthening nails. The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of radiological bone abnormalities between STRYDE, PRECICE, and FITBONE nails prior to nail removal. METHODS: This was a retrospective case series from three centres. Patients were included if they had either of the three limb-lengthening nails

Intramedullary Bone Transport Nail for the Treatment of Segmental Tibial Bone Defect After Acute Traumatic Bone Loss.

Medullary bone transport is a valuable technique to perform distraction osteogenesis with all-internal components. This technique has notable advantages over other techniques which rely on external pins, wires, and frames. Preoperative templating and surgical planning are critical to the success of this procedure to ensure that movement of the segment across the defect can be performed based on the specifications of the nail. The case of a young patient with a 67 mm diaphyseal tibial defect after an open tibial shaft fracture who had successful reconstruction with a medullary bone transport na
