CASE: We describe a patient with incomplete high median nerve palsy after surgical treatment of pediatric supracondylar humeral fracture (SCHF). Preoperative images after 11 months after the surgical treatment of the SCHF showed rotational deformity and an isolated median nerve entrapped between the proximal humerus anteriorly and callus posteriorly in the bony tunnel of the distal humerus. Two years after neurolysis, he showed clinical recovery. Four cases similar to our case were reported previously.
CONCLUSION: Common pediatric fractures may cause unusual neuropathy. Rotational deformity o

There is an unmet need for improved, clinically relevant methods to longitudinally quantify bone healing during fracture care. Here we develop a smart bone plate to wirelessly monitor healing utilizing electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) to provide real-time data on tissue composition within the fracture callus. To validate our technology, we created a 1-mm rabbit tibial defect and fixed the bone with a standard veterinary plate modified with a custom-designed housing that included two impedance sensors capable of wireless transmission. Impedance magnitude and phase measurements were trans

The healing capacity of bones after fracture implies the existence of adult regenerative cells. However, information on identification and functional role of fracture-induced progenitors is still lacking. Paired-related homeobox 1 (Prx1) is expressed during skeletogenesis. We hypothesize that fracture recapitulates Prx1's expression, and Prx1 expressing cells are critical to induce repair. To address our hypothesis, we used a combination of in vivo and in vitro approaches, short and long-term cell tracking analyses of progenies and actively expressing cells, cell ablation studies, and rodent a

Fractures of the clavicle are usually treated by closed means and heal uneventfully. In this report, we present an unusual case in which the subclavian vein was compressed by a fracture callus that had formed around a clavicular nonunion. Treatment included dissection of the subclavian vein from the fracture callus and compression plating with autogenous bone grafting of the fracture. Symptoms from the patient's venous obstruction slowly resolved without further treatment. The fracture united postoperatively.

To achieve optimal flexibility in biological internal fracture fixation two questions require clarification: which biomechanical parameter controls healing and what are the boundary conditions thereof? Fracture movement interacts with callus and local stress and strain are influencing the reaction of the tissue cells. A linear gradient of strain was created inside a sheep tibia osteotomy using an active external fixator. The effect of different amounts of strain applied at 10 stimulation cycles/day on the occurrence of callus and on enabling osseous connection of the fragments was evaluated us

CASE: We report the case of a 29-year-old man with a displaced mid-diaphyseal clavicle fracture that healed in anatomic position without fracture callus after surgical treatment but developed symptoms of late venous thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) 19 months postoperatively. He was diagnosed with proximal subclavian vein thrombosis and was treated with urgent thrombolysis and staged first rib resection with resolution of symptoms.
CONCLUSIONS: Late venous TOS is a potential complication of clavicle fracture, even in the setting of anatomic reduction and primary bone healing. This entity has pre

BACKGROUND: Macrophages and inflammatory cytokines play important roles in bone fracture healing. However, the expression patterns of macrophages and inflammatory cytokines during fracture healing under the condition of postmenopausal osteoporosis have not been fully revealed.
METHODS: Tibia transverse fracture was established 12 weeks after ovariectomy or sham operation in 16-week old female mice. Tibias were harvested before fracture or 1, 3, 5, 7, 14, 21, 28 days after fracture for radiological and histological examinations. M1/M2 inflammatory macrophages, osteal macrophages and gene expre

We investigated the effects of different rates and extents of lengthening on the affected nerves and muscles in callus distraction, in a rabbit tibial model. Electrophysiologic evaluations measuring the motor nerve conduction velocity of the peroneal and tibial nerves, and compound muscle action potentials of the anterior tibialis and gastrocnemius muscle were performed sequentially on rabbits whose left legs were lengthened at different rates and to different extents over a 5-month period after surgery. We found that neuropathies of the peroneal nerves developed earlier and were more severe t

Using autoradiography, I studied the effect of diaphyseal injuries on the DNA synthesis of growth plate cells in Swiss Albino rats and found that mitotic activity of germinal and proliferation zone cells of the growth plate and periosteal callus increased 24 hours after the fracture and peaked at 48 hours. The mitotic activity continued until the eighteenth day with gradual decline from the second day onwards. It appears as if the growth plate cells are stimulated by the same mitogenic activator as the periosteal cells. I therefore postulate that the overgrowth of long bones after fractures is

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the compositional variation of fibrous callus in the fracture site and the joint cavity and joint cartilage after being transplanted in the muscle pouch.
METHODS: Thirty 2 month old New Zealand white rabbits (weighing 1-1.5 kg) were randomly divided into two groups: a callus transplantation group (Group A, n=15) and a cartilage transplantation group (Group B, n=15). In Group A, closed radius fracture was made and the autologous fibrous callus was transplanted in the right knee joint cavity at 12 days postoperatively. In Group B, the right knee joint cartilage of the ani

A 3-year-old boy with osteogenesis imperfecta had hyperplastic callus formation in the right femur, without preceding trauma or fracture. Radiologically, this bony mass in the femoral shaft mimicked osteosarcoma. Open biopsy showed that it was benign and suggested hyperplastic callus formation. Seven months after the biopsy, the hyperplastic callus had practically vanished. A similar process developed in the left femur 1 year later, also without fracture.

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the course of a nerve root in the neural foramen and its relationship with foraminal entrapment or impingement in 19 adult patients with isthmic spondylolisthesis and radicular pain. Myelo-computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed that the course of the nerve root was normal (ie, medial and then inferior, along the pedicle) in 10 patients and was deviated posteriorly in 9 patients. The patients with a normal nerve root course (N-NRC) had either a bony callus projecting medially into the spinal canal (n = 6) or a low mean percentile o

Bony union is a primary predictor of outcome after surgical fixation of long bone fractures. Murine models offer many advantages in assessing bony healing due to their low costs and small size. However, current fracture recovery investigations in mice frequently rely on animal sacrifice and costly analyses. The modified Radiographic Union Score for Tibia fractures (mRUST) scoring system is a validated metric for evaluating bony healing in humans utilizing plain radiographs, which are relatively inexpensive and do not require animal sacrifice. However, its use has not been well established in m

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In fracture healing, ischemia caused by vascular injuries, chronic vascular diseases, and metabolic comorbidities is one of the major risk factors for delayed union and non-union formation. To gain novel insights into the molecular and cellular pathology of ischemic fracture healing, appropriate animal models are needed. Murine models are of particular interest, as they allow to study the molecular aspects of fracture healing due to the availability of both a large number of murine antibodies and gene-targeted animals. Thus, we present the development of an ischemic fra

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is highly upregulated in response to skeletal injury, suggesting it plays a role in the inflammatory phase of fracture repair. However, the impact of IL-6 on successful repair remains incompletely defined. Therefore, we investigated the role of IL-6 in two models of fracture repair (full fracture and stress fracture) using 12-week old IL-6 global knockout mice (IL-6 KO) and wild type (WT) littermate controls. Callus morphology and mineral density 14 days after full femur fracture did not differ between IL-6 knockout mice and controls. In contrast, IL-6 KO mice had an enhan

Diabetics are at increased risk for fracture, and experience severely impaired skeletal healing characterized by delayed union or nonunion of the bone. The periosteum harbors osteochondral progenitors that can differentiate into chondrocytes and osteoblasts, and this connective tissue layer is required for efficient fracture healing. While bone marrow-derived stromal cells have been studied extensively in the context of diabetic skeletal repair and osteogenesis, the effect of diabetes on the periosteum and its ability to contribute to bone regeneration has not yet been explicitly evaluated. BACKGROUND: To estimate the effects of different intensities of intermittent pneumatic soft-tissue compression on bone defect repair in an animal model.
METHODS: Five mm radial bone defect in length was made in 64 mature New Zealand rabbits and all animals randomly assigned into four groups: Group A (control group without compression), Group B (5-7 kPa intensity), Group C (8-10 kPa intensity) and Group D (11-13 kPa intensity). On the fourth day after surgery, their legs were intermittently pneumatic compressed for 4 weeks. The stimulation lasted 30 min every day and the frequency of compressi
