Maharanga bicolor, Boraginaceae, is used in the Nepalese ethnomedicine for the treatment of several diseases. In the course of screening investigations the dichloromethane extract of the roots of Maharanga bicolor was found to inhibit the growth of gram positive bacteria. Bio-assay directed fractionation led to the isolation of five active naphthazarins, deoxyalkannin (1), alkannin (2), acetylalkannin (3), alkannin beta-hydroxyisovalerate (4) and alkannin beta-acetoxyisovalerate (5). Compounds 2-5 showed antibacterial activity against multi resistant human pathogenic Staphylococcus and Enteroc

Trichodesma africanum L. (Boraginaceae), a desert plant of Africa and Asia, was found to contain beta-amyrin, beta-methyl oleanate, potassium nitrate and a nitrogen-containing toxin, each producing a notable toxic response when injected in laboratory mice and rats. Muscle contraction and a blood pressure reduction caused by the toxin are described. Pyrrolizidine alkaloids, e.g., trichodesmine, present in other Trichodesma species were also identified in the material by tlc and spectrometric methods. These did not, however, produce the acute toxic effects observed for the nonalkaloid compounds

Alkanet (Alkanna tinctoria) is a plant native to and cultivated in parts of Europe, Asia and the Middle East. It has been used for thousands of years as a medicinal agent and as a colorant for textiles, food and cosmetics. An extract from the root of this plant has been used with a mordant to stain nuclei. We describe here the versatility of different extracts from this plant to stain lipids red and to counterstain certain other tissue elements blue. The color variation and selective differential staining is due to solvent polarity and pH. Extracts contain numerous chemical species, all of whi

The pyrrolizidine alkaloid (PA) content of flowers, leaves, and roots of Anchusa strigosa (Boraginaceae) was analysed by ESI-LC-MS. Six PAs, including two new natural compounds, were detected, characterized by NMR spectroscopy, and quantified in each plant organ. The results indicated that the highest total concentration of PAs was in the leaves (23.63 mg/g of dried part), followed by the flowers (19.77 mg/g), and finally by the roots (1.80 mg/g). All PAs isolated were subjected to Spodoptera exigua and Pieris brassicae larvae. Feeding activity by both herbivore species using a bioassay was in

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Boraginales, a subcosmopolitan order with ~2700 species in currently 11 families, has seen fluctuating classification at the family and generic levels. Gynoecium and fruit morphology have been pivotal in morphological classifications, but a systematic evaluation based on anatomical and ontogenetic data has not been attempted.
METHODS: We revisited the phylogenetic relationships in Boraginales by analysing 162 newly sequenced samples using the Angiosperms353 probe set, together with existing data from 88 samples. Our sampling covers >80 % of the genera and all currently an

Arnebia euchroma(Royle) Johnst. is a high-value medicinal plant. Owing to depleted wild resources and inferior quality of artificially cultivated populations, it currently faces a supply-demand imbalance. As endogenous regulators of plant growth and secondary metabolism, endophytes may influence the quality of medicinal materials. However, their role in A. euchroma remains unreported, as existing studies have primarily focused on the impacts of environmental factors. High-throughput sequencing and bioinformatics were employed to analyze the community characteristics of endophytes in the roots

Gastrointestinal cancers are still the leading cause of death worldwide. This is related, among other things, to the non-specific symptoms, especially in the initial stages, and also to the limited possibilities for treatment. Therefore, research is still being conducted to improve the detection of this type of cancer and increase the effectiveness of therapy. The potential application of natural compounds in cancer management deserves special attention. In the group of such products, there are polyphenolic compounds that reveal, e.g., anti-oxidative, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti

Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is an illness caused by eating tropical coral fish contaminated with ciguatoxins (CTXs). The clinical management of patients with CFP is generally supportive and symptomatic in nature as no antidote exists. Of the many drugs prescribed, several have been claimed to be efficient in small, uncontrolled studies, but the outcomes of treatments with these medicines are often contradictory. In New Caledonia, traditional remedies are commonly employed in the treatment of CFP and of the 90 plant species catalogued as useful in CFP, the most popular herbal remedy by far i

Alkannin is an active constituent from the root extract of Alkanna tinctoria of the Boraginaceae family and it may have utility as a heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) inducer in living organisms. Here, the effects of alkannin-induced HSP70 on ultraviolet (UV) B (40 mJ/cm(2))-induced apoptosis were investigated in human keratinocyte HaCaT cells. Pretreatment of cells with alkannin (1 µM) caused significant inhibition of UVB-induced apoptosis and caspase-3 cleavage. On the other hand, the addition of KNK437 (HSP70 inhibitor) reversed the action of alkannin increasing UVB-induced apoptosis in a dose-

Shikonin derivatives from Arnebia euchroma (Royle) Johnst. roots possess significant economic value as pharmaceutical agents, natural dyes, and cosmetic additives. To investigate hypoxia's impact on shikonin biosynthesis and its mechanisms, we subjected A. euchroma roots to hypoxic stress (1% O2). Hypoxic roots remained white with minimal shikonin accumulation. Upon reoxygenation (≈20% O2), rapid shikonin synthesis occurred within 4 h. qRT-PCR revealed suppressed expression of shikonin pathway genes (CYP76B74, CYP76B100, AePGT, etc.) under hypoxia. Transcriptome analysis of roots at 0 h (hypox

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCMs) are an important source to discover new anti-infectious drugs. Neuraminidases (NAs) not only play a key role on human health, but also are promising targets for anti-infectious drugs. Arnebia euchroma which is a widely used traditional Chinese medicine with the effect of cooling blood and detoxifying showed potential inhibitory activities on both bacterial NA and virus NA, suggesting that the material basis of A. euchroma deserves in-depth study.
AIM OF THE STUDY: To investigate the anti-infectious constituents of A. euchrom
