Approved and experimental countermeasures against pestiviral diseases: Bovine viral diarrhea, classical swine fever and border disease.

The pestiviruses, bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), classical swine fever (CSFV) and border disease virus, are important livestock pathogens in many countries, but current vaccines do not completely prevent the spread of infection. Control of pestiviral diseases is especially difficult due to the constant viremia and viral shedding of persistently infected (PI) animals, which must be identified and eliminated to prevent disease transmission. Existing vaccines are limited by the delay between vaccination and the onset of protection, the difficulty of differentiating serologically between vacc

Detection and differentiation of pestivirus antibodies in sheep and suckler cow herds in Southern Germany.

BACKGROUND: Pestiviruses such as bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) or the ovine border disease virus (BDV) are not strictly species-specific and can be transmitted between related animal species. Due to serological cross-reactivity, antibodies against e.g. BDV may interfere with BVDV diagnostics. To assess the impact of non-BVDV pestiviruses on BVDV surveillance during the transition period from virological to serological testing in a region free from BVDV for six years, the presence and type of pestivirus antibodies in sheep and cattle in Southern Germany were investigated. RESULTS: Pestivi

Sustainable strategies for Ebola virus disease outbreak preparedness in Africa: a case study on lessons learnt in countries neighbouring the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

BACKGROUND: From May 2018 to September 2022, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) experienced seven Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreaks within its borders. During the 10th EVD outbreak (2018-2020), the largest experienced in the DRC and the second largest and most prolonged EVD outbreak recorded globally, a WHO risk assessment identified nine countries bordering the DRC as moderate to high risk from cross border importation. These countries implemented varying levels of Ebola virus disease preparedness interventions. This case study highlights the gains and shortfalls with the Ebola virus di

Congenital infections with nonarbo togaviruses.

The present review deals with the similarities and differences of selected aspects of prenatal pestivirus infections of domestic animals and congenital rubella of man. Hog cholera virus, bovine virus diarrhoea virus and border disease virus are antigenically closely related, but unrelated to rubella virus. The nonarbo togaviruses are capable of producing congenital infections resulting in a wide spectrum of abnormalities. The infected foetus can die in utero, in the neonatal period, or it may be born with teratogenic defects. In addition, apparently healthy progeny can be delivered that develo

Genetic diversity and transmission dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 in East Africa.

COVID-19 is a respiratory disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which put the entire world on hold for two years from 2020 to March 2022 before the rapid roll-out of vaccines. This virus claimed many lives, 6,331,727 deaths globally, and 172,390 people in Africa died from the disease, while Uganda lost 3,620 people in the same period. The study aimed to analyse the spread patterns of SARS-CoV-2 in Uganda and neighbouring countries and understand the community transmission within Uganda. The study utilised genomic sequences from the Global Initiative on Sharing Avian Influenza Data (GISAID) r

First-ever Marburg virus disease outbreak in Equatorial Guinea and Tanzania: An imminent crisis in West and East Africa.

The Marburg virus, which is a member of the same virus family as the Ebola virus called Filoviridae, causes the severe infectious disease known as Marburg virus disease (MVD). Previously, different outbreaks of MVD have appeared in different African countries, including Ghana, Guinea, Uganda, Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, and South Africa. For the first time, Equatorial Guinea and Tanzania are experiencing MVD outbreaks. A total of 17 laboratory-confirmed cases of MVD and 23 probable cases have been reported in Equatorial Guinea since the confirmation of the outbreak on

A narrative review of filovirus outbreaks in East Africa: lessons for strengthening regional disease surveillance.

The recent outbreaks of Marburg virus disease (MVD) in Tanzania and Sudan virus disease (SVD) in Uganda reveal the growing threat of filoviruses in East Africa. These highly lethal viruses, with case fatality rates exceeding 50%, continue to challenge regional health systems due to delayed detection, weak surveillance networks, and limited cross-border coordination. The outbreak in Tanzania's Kagera region, a major transit hub, highlights the risk of international spread, while Uganda's struggle with Sudan virus further emphasizes the urgent need for regional infectious disease surveillance. Distribution of mosquitoes and mosquito-borne arboviruses in Yunnan Province near the China-Myanmar-Laos border.

Economic development and increased tourism in the southern region of Yunnan Province in China, adjacent to several countries in Southeast Asia, has increased the likelihood of import and export of vectors and vector-borne diseases. We report the results of surveillance of mosquitoes and mosquito-borne arboviruses along the border of China-Myanmar-Laos in 2005 and 2006, and information associating several arboviruses with infections and possibly disease in local human populations. Seventeen mosquito species representing four genera were obtained, and 14 strains of mosquito-borne viruses represe

Seroprevalence of sandfly fever virus infection in military personnel on the western border of Iran.

Military troops deployed to endemic areas are at risk of contracting sandfly fever, an arthropod-borne viral infection. Although typically a self-limited disease, sandfly fever can cause significant morbidity and loss of function among soldiers. We conducted this study to determine the extent of past SFV infection in a group of healthy Iranian military personnel in Ilam province on the western border of Iran. A total of 201 serum samples were tested by indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) to detect four common sandfly fever virus serotypes. Demographic data were also collected. Overall, 37

Donor dependency and pandemic readiness: insights from the 2026 Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak in the East African community.

The 2026 Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD) outbreak has exposed persistent weaknesses in health-security preparedness across the East African Community (EAC). Although regional preparedness has improved, major gaps remain in early detection, cross-border collaboration and surveillance, laboratory capacity, infection prevention and control, and community engagement. These vulnerabilities have been intensified by declining external health-security funding since 2025, incomplete implementation of domestic health-financing commitments, and the fragility of systems that were built with substantial don

Processes Underlying Rabies Virus Incursions across US-Canada Border as Revealed by Whole-Genome Phylogeography.

Disease control programs aim to constrain and reduce the spread of infection. Human disease interventions such as wildlife vaccination play a major role in determining the limits of a pathogen's spatial distribution. Over the past few decades, a raccoon-specific variant of rabies virus (RRV) has invaded large areas of eastern North America. Although expansion into Canada has been largely prevented through vaccination along the US border, several outbreaks have occurred in Canada. Applying phylogeographic approaches to 289 RRV whole-genome sequences derived from isolates collected in Canada and

Vector Surveillance, Host Species Richness, and Demographic Factors as West Nile Disease Risk Indicators.

West Nile virus (WNV) is the most common arthropod-borne virus (arbovirus) in the United States (US) and is the leading cause of viral encephalitis in the country. The virus has affected tens of thousands of US persons total since its 1999 North America introduction, with thousands of new infections reported annually. Approximately 1% of humans infected with WNV acquire neuroinvasive West Nile Disease (WND) with severe encephalitis and risk of death. Research describing WNV ecology is needed to improve public health surveillance, monitoring, and risk assessment. We applied Bayesian joint-spati

Genomic analysis and spatiotemporal distribution of newly emerging lumpy skin disease virus in malaysia identify recombinant strain from transboundary spread.

Lumpy skin disease is a transboundary viral disease affecting bovine species. This disease had never been recorded in Malaysia prior to May of 2021, and had spread to 65 of 92 districts in Peninsular Malaysia by December of the same year. In this study, we conducted a whole-genome sequencing, phylogenetic analysis and geographical mapping of the outbreak from lumpy skin disease virus isolated from the first wave of outbreaks to better understand the origin, transmission, and genetic diversity of the virus. The whole genome sequences of these isolates were deposited in GenBank with accession nu

Notes from the Field: Development of a Contact Tracing System for Ebola Virus Disease - Kambia District, Sierra Leone, January-February 2015.

Kambia District is located in northwestern Sierra Leone along the international border with Guinea. The district is dominated by forest and swamp habitat and has a population of approximately 270,000 persons (approximately 5% of the nation's population) who live in rural villages and predominantly subsist on farming and trading. During 2014-2015, the remoteness of the area, a highly porous border with Guinea, and strong traditional beliefs about health care and sickness led to unique challenges in controlling the Ebola Virus Disease (Ebola) outbreak within the district.

Potential role of peste des petits ruminants virus in small ruminant abortions.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the frequency, genetic variability, and phylogeny of the peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) in ovine and caprine fetuses. During 2014 and 2017, a total of 1054 embryos/fetuses were collected in Turkey. A real-time RT-PCR assay was used for the detection of the PPRV RNA. Genetic characterization and phylogenetic analysis of the PPRV field isolates were conducted by sequencing fusion (F) protein and nucleoprotein (N) gene segments. Samples were also collected from ewes (n = 83) and nanny goats (n = 3) that had aborted and whose embryos/fetuses

Serologic examination of aborted ovine and bovine fetal fluids for the diagnosis of border disease, bluetongue, bovine viral diarrhea, and leptospiral infections.

Fetal serum from most of 994 bovine and 553 ovine aborted fetuses was tested serologically for antibodies to border disease (BD), bovine viral diarrhea (BVD), and bluetongue (BT) viruses, and to Leptospira sp., and the results were compared with the results of isolation procedures, fluorescent antibody tests (FAT), and histologic examinations of the same fetuses. Antibodies to BT virus were not found in any of the 994 bovine and 553 ovine fetuses. Antibody titers to BVD virus were present in 39 of 966 bovine fetuses tested, and BVD virus was detected in 4 of the 39. Four of 74 fetuses in which

Genetic diversity and population structure of Aedes aegypti after massive vector control for dengue fever prevention in Yunnan border areas.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne disease caused by the dengue virus. Aedes aegypti (Ae. Aegypti) is considered the primary vector of Dengue virus transmission in Yunnan Province, China. With increased urbanization, Ae. aegypti populations have significantly increased over the last 20 years. Despite all the efforts that were made for controlling the virus transmission, especially on border areas between Yunnan and Laos, Vietnam, and Myanmar (dengue-endemic areas), the epidemic has not yet been eradicated. Thus, further understanding of the genetic diversity, population structure, and invasive s

Pestivirus infections in ruminants other than cattle.

Pestiviruses infect a wide range of domestic, captive and free-living ruminants. Among domestic livestock, Border disease virus is a well recognised cause of an important congenital disease of sheep in virtually all sheep-rearing countries of the world. The clinical signs, pathogenesis, diagnosis, epidemiology and control of this disease are described in detail. One natural outbreak of Border disease in domestic goats has been described and there is serological and virological evidence that pestiviruses occur widely in this species. A pestivirus has been isolated from a farmed red deer (Cervus
