The P300 response to an auditory two-tone discrimination task has previously been reported to have prolonged latency and reduced amplitude in schizophrenia and borderline personality disorder. In this study, P300 was recorded from 23 subjects with borderline personality disorder, 12 subjects fulfilling criteria for both borderline and schizotypal personality, and 11 subjects with schizotypal personality. The mean P300 latency was similar in each of these groups and was significantly longer than in 32 patients with neuroses and other personality disorders and 74 nonpatient controls. These findi

With an estimated lifetime prevalence as high as 5.9% in the general population, borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a psychiatric disorder characterized by marked impulsivity as well as difficulties in interpersonal relationships, self-image, and affects. The burden on the health care system is immense with BPD patients accounting for 10%-20% of the patients in mental health outpatient facilities and 15%-40% in mental health inpatient facilities. Further, while 75%-80% of BPD patients attempt to commit suicide, 10% succeed; this mortality rate exceeds even that of anorexia nervosa which,

Borderline intellectual functioning (BIF) is highly prevalent in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD), but their relationship remains poorly understood. This retrospective study aimed to investigate the cognitive profile of BIF among people diagnosed with BPD. Clinical, demographic, and neuropsychological data of fifty-five outpatients with BPD were analyzed. The sample split into two groups: BPD with BIF (BIF+: n = 25; intelligence quotient - IQ - range: 71-84) and BPD without BIF (BIF-: n = 30; IQ range: 86-124). Between-group comparisons employed either parametric and non-par

BACKGROUND: The boundaries between the affective instability in bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder have not been clearly defined. Using self-report measures, previous research has suggested that the affective lability of patients with bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder may have different characteristics.
METHODS: We assessed the mood states of 29 subjects meeting Revised Diagnostic Interview for Borderlines and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) criteria for BPD and 25 subjects meeting DSM-IV criteria for bipolar

The relationship between bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder remains controversial since in both conditions there are overlapping and similar symptomatic dimensions. Symptomatic dimensions suitable to subserve differential diagnosis are: mood, mood variability mode, and personal and family history. Characteristics of psychotic symptoms may also be useful in the differentiation. On the other hand, anxiety symptoms, neuropsychological profiles, neuro-imaging procedures and biomarkers seem not to contribute to differentiate between both diseases. The presentation of nonsuicidal s

Digital health applications (DiGA) for borderline personality disorder (BPD) are still a relatively new and underresearched topic but hold great potential, especially considering that there is no single approved medication for BPD. So far, one DiGA (priovi) has been permanently approved for BPD by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM). Concerns related to this topic mainly relate to patient safety and the lack of a therapeutic relationship; however, studies on priovi have actually shown positive findings regarding the therapeutic relationship and its use seems to increase

INTRODUCTION: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a complex mental disorder with core symptoms like interpersonal instability, emotion dysregulation, self-harm, and impulsive decision-making. Previous neuropsychological studies have found impairment in the decision-making of patients with BPD related to impulsivity. In our study, we focus on a better, more nuanced understanding of impulsive decision-making in BPD with the help of Rogers' decision-making test that simulates a gambling situation.
METHODS: A novelty of our study is that we excluded from further analysis non-compliant partic

Mentalizing, recognized as the capacity to understand behaviors in the context of our own mental states and those of other people, is being researched more and more commonly in regard to various mental disorders. The research on mentalization focuses on, among other things, borderline personality disorder, which is at present perceived as an emerging problem in the population of adolescents. In order to summarize the currently accessible knowledge of mentalizing in adolescents with borderline personality disorder, we thoroughly analyzed relevant publications. Based on the available literature,

Borderline personality disorder is a complex psychiatric disorder with limited treatment options that are associated with large heterogeneity in treatment response and high rates of dropout. New or complementary treatments for borderline personality disorder are needed that may be able to bolster treatment outcomes. In this review, the authors comment on the plausibility for research on 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) used in conjunction with psychotherapy for borderline personality disorder (i.e., MDMA-assisted psychotherapy [MDMA-AP]). On the basis of the promise of MDMA-AP in treat

OBJECTIVE: To investigate Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and associated psychiatric disorders in real clinical practice.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty patients (72% female; n=36; 28% male; n=14, aged 22.4±4.3 years) with ICD-10 diagnosis F60.31 «Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder, Borderline Type» were examined. Research methods included a clinical follow-up method and psychometric assessment.
RESULTS: The majority of patients were female (72%). Asocial environment and low social status were typical for the patients with BPD. The vast majority of patients (86%; n=43) were not dia

BACKGROUND: Patients with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) manifest affective and behavioral symptoms causing personal distress, relationship difficulties, and reduced quality of life with global functioning impairment, mainly when the disease takes an unfavorable course. A substantial amount of healthcare costs is dedicated to addressing these issues. Many BPD patients receive medications, mostly those who do not respond to psychological interventions.
OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to assess the efficacy of the most used strategies of pharmacological interventions in BPD with a comprehensive o

OBJECTIVE: Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) frequently co-occur with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and can lead to misdiagnosis with schizophrenia (SCZ) or other primary psychotic disorders. Misdiagnosis is more common when AVH meet criteria for Schneiderian first rank symptoms (FRS). This paper's objective is to improve diagnostic accuracy by outlining particular clinical features that can assist the distinction between BPD and psychotic disorders in these cases.
CONCLUSION: The overall clinical presentation when AVH occur in BPD can assist in determining a primary diagnosis of B

Sleep problems are very common among psychiatric patients. Borderline personality disorder, as a common and severe mental disorder, is associated with different types of sleep disturbances, such as disturbances of sleep continuity, altered REM sleep regulation and nightmares. These disturbances are the result of interaction of the personality traits, concomitant and comorbid diseases and environmental factors. Despite the high prevalence of sleep related disorders in BPD patients, this aspect of BPD is still neglected in clinical and research settings. To date there has been little agreement o

OBJECTIVE: This study examines Axis I comorbidity in patients with borderline personality disorder as compared with patients with other personality disorders and to patients without personality disorders.
METHODS: A total of 235 clinical histories were evaluated. These were divided into three groups: 92 pertaining to patients with borderline personality disorder, 69 to ones having other personality disorders and 74 to patients without personality disorders. For purposes of statistical analysis, ANOVA and chi-square were employed.
RESULTS: There were 89 (96.7%) patients with borderline person

OBJECTIVES: Extended mind theory, a recent development in the field of cognitive philosophy, suggests that the information and processes contained in external objects such as notebooks and computers can be considered as much a part of a person's mind as the processes contained within the brain itself. This paper aims to outline extended mind theory, and to explore how it might be applied to an understanding of psychiatric conditions such as borderline personality disorder (BPD).
CONCLUSION: Those with BPD have a deficit in their ability to perform certain high-level cognitive tasks, such as r

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by interpersonal disturbances, but the neurocognitive aspects of these symptoms are poorly understood. We hypothesized that patients with BPD have impaired perception of emotional expressions, which are related to symptoms of interpersonal dysfunction. To control potential confounding factors, this study excluded subjects with comorbid diagnoses known to be associated with impaired affect perception. We tested 43 outpatients with BPD and 26 healthy controls on emotion recognition tasks (facial, prosodic, and integrated facial/prosodic), no

The frequent occurrence of depressive symptoms in patients with borderline personality disorder has generated considerable interest in the nature of the relationship between borderline personality disorder and the depressive disorders. Data from the perspectives of phenomenology, biology, family history, course of illness, comorbidity patterns, and treatment response have been brought to bear on the question. Reviews based on research available by 1985 and 1991, respectively, arrived at differing conclusions: (1) that both disorders shared common but non-specific sources, and (2) that the two

This paper reviews the literature concerning the phenomenology and duration of psychosis in borderline patients and presents empirical findings concerning a sample of eight borderline women with psychosis. Little work has yet been done to establish the duration of so called "transient psychotic episodes," but the clinical consensus up to now has been that such episodes last less than two weeks. The patients in the current study experienced psychotic symptoms lasting between three weeks and four months. They were characterized by hysterical features, visual disturbances, and a possible history
