Neonatal Immunity to Bordetella pertussis Infection and Current Prevention Strategies.

Bordetella pertussis is the bacterial agent of whooping cough, an infectious disease that is reemerging despite high vaccine coverage. Newborn children are the most affected, not only because they are too young to be vaccinated but also due to qualitative and quantitative differences in their immune system, which makes them more susceptible to infection and severe manifestations, leading to a higher mortality rate comparing to other groups. Until recently, prevention consisted of vaccinating children in the first year of life and the herd vaccination of people directly in touch with them, but

Bordetella pertussis infection is common in nonvaccinated infants admitted for bronchiolitis.

BACKGROUND: Preliminary evidence suggests that viral-pertussis coinfections are common in nonvaccinated infants. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Bordetella pertussis infection was studied by polymerase chain reaction in nasopharyngeal aspirates in 142 infants <6 months of age, who were admitted for bronchiolitis. Viral etiology, documented by antigen detection or polymerase chain reaction in nasopharyngeal aspirate, was respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in 105, rhinovirus in 8, influenza A virus in 8, and other viruses in 10 cases. Only 11 samples were negative. RESULTS: B. pertussis infection was foun

Bordetella bronchiseptica infection in cats. ABCD guidelines on prevention and management.

OVERVIEW: Bordetella bronchiseptica is a Gram-negative bacterium that colonises the respiratory tract of mammals and is considered to be a primary pathogen of domestic cats. It is sensible to consider B bronchiseptica as a rare cause of zoonotic infections. The bacterium is susceptible to common disinfectants. INFECTION: The bacterium is shed in oral and nasal secretions of infected cats. Dogs with respiratory disease are an infection risk for cats. The microorganism colonises the ciliated epithelium of the respiratory tract of the host, establishing chronic infections. DISEASE SIGNS: A wide

Quantitative observations on Bordetella bronchiseptica infection in atrophic rhinitis of pigs.

Clinical atrophic rhinitis in seven pig herds could not be associated with the infection rate or higher numbers of B bronchiseptica in nasal swabs when compared with unaffected herds. B bronchiseptica isolates from herds with atrophic rhinitis and receiving sulphonamide medication were resistant to sulphonamides in vitro and there was a beneficial clinical response after changing to oxytetracycline medication. In an unaffected herd three piglets naturally infected with B bronchiseptica but possessing low levels of passive antibody showed marked turbinate hypoplasia when killed at seven weeks,

[Frecuency of Bordetella pertussis infection in adults: a multicenter study in Argentina].

INTRODUCTION: The epidemiology of Bordetella pertussis (Bp) has changed following universal pediatric vaccination, with an increase in cases among adolescents and adults, who may have a higher risk of complications and behave as a reservoir for infection in infants. Reported prevalence in adults ranges from 2% to 32% worldwide. The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of Bp infection in adults with cough in Argentina. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective, multicenter, observational cross-sectional study conducted between August 2023 and August 2024, including individuals age

Pharmacotherapy for Bordetella pertussis infection. I. A synthesis of laboratory sciences.

There is considerable history and practice experience both with laboratory susceptibility testing for Bordetella pertussis and clinical treatment. This two-part narrative review provides a synthesis of the laboratory and clinical sciences as they apply to this bacterium and the clinical consequences of treating infection. It is generally held that antibiotic susceptibility testing for B. pertussis is not sufficiently standardised, but there has not been an urgent need to consolidate the same given the lack global experience with major resistance profiles. Experience in China, however, has prov

Analysis of the In Vivo Transcriptome of Bordetella pertussis during Infection of Mice.

Bordetella pertussis causes the disease whooping cough through coordinated control of virulence factors by the Bordetella virulence gene system. Microarrays and, more recently, RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) have been used to describe in vitro gene expression profiles of B. pertussis and other pathogens. In previous studies, we have analyzed the in vitro gene expression profiles of B. pertussis, and we hypothesize that the infection transcriptome profile in vivo is significantly different from that under laboratory growth conditions. To study the infection transcriptome of B. pertussis, we developed

[Serological evaluation of Bordetella pertussis infection in adults with prolonged cough].

Pertussis is a vaccine-preventable disease that is transmitted from infected to susceptible individuals by respiratory route. Bordetella pertussis infection may occur at any age as neither vaccine nor natural infection induced immunity lasts life-long. This study was planned to demonstrate the serological evidence of infection among adults, to raise awareness among clinicians and to provide data for the development of strategies to protect vulnerable infants. A total of 538 patients (345 female, 193 male) ages between 18-87 years who had a complain of prolonged cough for more than two weeks we

Bordetella holmesii infection: current knowledge and a vision for future research.

Bordetella holmesii is a recently recognized Gram-negative bacterium causing both pertussis-like respiratory symptoms and invasive infections, such as bacteremia, pneumonia, meningitis, arthritis, pericarditis and endocarditis. Few data are available on its epidemiological characteristics, mostly related to respiratory infections. However, these are frequently misdiagnosed as a Bordetella pertussis infection as most diagnostic tests routinely used are not species-specific, thus biasing the epidemiological studies of both strains, as well as the efficacy studies on pertussis vaccination. There

Macrolide-resistant Bordetella pertussis infection in newborn girl, France.

A macrolide antimicrobial drug was administered to a newborn with cough. On day 23 of hospitalization, macrolide-resistant Bordetella pertussis was isolated from nasopharyngeal aspirates. DNA sequencing and PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism showed a 2047 A-to-G mutation in the 3 copies of the 23S rRNA gene. Monitoring for macrolide resistance is essential in infants <6 months of age.

Edema as a new predominant symptom of Bordetella pertussis infection in a newborn.

Pertussis is an infectious disease with characteristic clinical signs. In this report, we describe transmission of pertussis directly after birth. Edema and mild hyponatremia were notable predominant symptoms of Bordetella pertussis infection. By exclusion of all other causes, the edema was probably due to inflammation and damage to the capillary wall caused by pertussis toxins.

Pathogenesis of infection with Bordetella pertussis in hamster tracheal organ culture.

Hamster tracheal organ culture was employed as a model for study of the pathogenesis of infection due to Bordetella pertussis. Infected tracheal explants were examined with light, immunofluorescence, and electrom microscopy. B. pertussis organisms preferentially attached to the ciliated cells, producing ciliostasis and marked destruction of the subcellular organelles followed by expulsion of these cells from the epithelial layer. Other nonciliated respiratory epithelial cells appeared to be unaffected. Metabolic studies on infected tracheal cultrues indicated that significant deficiencies in s

Human Bordetella bronchiseptica infection related to contact with infected animals: persistence of bacteria in host.

Within a period of 2 1/2 years, Bordetella bronchiseptica was isolated four times from a 79-year-old woman with bronchopneumonia. We have demonstrated by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis that this infection was related to contact with infected rabbits. The initial human B. bronchiseptica isolate had a phenotype characteristic of usual B. bronchiseptica clinical isolates; it produced toxin and adhesins, such as adenylate cyclase-hemolysin, filamentous hemagglutinin, and pertactin, and was able to induce lethality in a murine respiratory model. By contrast, although the three successive human is

Asymptomatic Bordetella pertussis infections in a longitudinal cohort of young African infants and their mothers.

Recent pertussis resurgence in numerous countries may be driven by asymptomatic infections. Most pertussis surveillance studies are cross-sectional and cannot distinguish asymptomatic from pre-symptomatic infections. Longitudinal surveillance could overcome this barrier, providing more information about the true burden of pertussis at the population level. Here we analyze 17,442 nasopharyngeal samples from a longitudinal cohort of 1320 Zambian mother/infant pairs. Our analysis has two elements. First, we demonstrate that the full range of IS481 qPCR CT values provides insight into pertussis ep

A Differential Diagnostic Nomogram for Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Bordetella pertussis in Pediatric Upper Respiratory Infections.

BACKGROUND: Differentiating Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) from Bordetella pertussis (BP) infections in children at primary care hospitals is challenging due to similar symptoms and overlapping epidemic seasons. This study evaluated the use of C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and lymphocyte counts from a single blood test to quickly distinguish between MP and BP infections. METHODS: The study included a derivation cohort (n = 301) and a validation cohort (n = 87). Logistic regression analyses identified predictors for differentiating MP and BP infections, leading to the development of a prognostic

Limited response of primary nasal epithelial cells to Bordetella pertussis infection.

Bordetella pertussis is a Gram-negative coccobacillus that causes whooping cough or pertussis, a respiratory disease that has recently experienced a resurgence. Upon entering the respiratory tract, B. pertussis colonizes the airway epithelium and attaches to ciliated cells. Here, we used primary human nasal epithelial cells (hNECs) cultured at the air-liquid interface and investigated their interaction with B. pertussis B1917, focusing on the role of the type III secretion system effector protein BteA. In this model, which resembles the epithelial cells of nasal epithelium in vivo, B. pertussi

Controlled Human Infection With Bordetella pertussis Induces Asymptomatic, Immunizing Colonization.

BACKGROUND: Bordetella pertussis is among the leading causes of vaccine-preventable deaths and morbidity globally. Human asymptomatic carriage as a reservoir for community transmission of infections might be a target of future vaccine strategies, but has not been demonstrated. Our objective was to demonstrate that asymptomatic nasopharyngeal carriage of Bordetella pertussis is inducible in humans and to define the microbiological and immunological features of presymptomatic infection. METHODS: Healthy subjects aged 18-45 years with an antipertussis toxin immunoglobin G (IgG) concentration of
