Prolonged and night-time bottle-feeding in relation to early childhood caries: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Early childhood caries (ECC) remains a major public health problem worldwide. Infant feeding practices, particularly bottle-feeding duration and nocturnal bottle use, have been implicated as potential risk factors; however, evidence regarding duration-specific effects remains inconsistent. The aim was to systematically evaluate whether prolonged bottle-feeding and nocturnal bottle use are associated with increased prevalence of ECC. METHODS: This systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251186608). MEDLINE, Cochrane Central, ScienceDirect and

Factors associated with feeding problems in bottle-fed preterm infants: A descriptive cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The feeding problems of preterm infants often persist after neonatal intensive care unit discharge. Further evidence on the feeding problems preterm infants experience after hospital discharge is needed to better serve this vulnerable population. This study aimed to identify infant-related factors associated with bottle-feeding problems in preterm infants before the age of 7 months. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This descriptive and cross-sectional study included 338 mothers of preterm infants younger than 7 months of corrected age between April 2023 and April 2024. Mothers completed a s

Bottle feeding in the bed or crib before sleep time and wheezing in early childhood.

OBJECTIVE: Bottle feeding in the bed or crib before sleep time has been associated with an increased risk of wheezing in the first year of life. We examined whether bottle feeding in the bed or crib before sleep time in the first year of life is associated with wheezing in the first 5 years of life. METHODS: In a prospective cohort study of 448 children with parental history of atopy followed from birth, we examined the relation between the number of bimonthly parental reports of bottle feeding in the bed or crib before sleep time in the first year of life (range: 0-6 reports) and parental re

The relationship of bottle feeding and other sucking behaviors with speech disorder in Patagonian preschoolers.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that children's nonnutritive sucking habits may lead to delayed development of their oral anatomy and functioning. However, these findings were inconsistent. We investigated associations between use of bottles, pacifiers, and other sucking behaviors with speech disorders in children attending three preschools in Punta Arenas (Patagonia), Chile. METHODS: Information on infant feeding and sucking behaviors, age starting and stopping breast- and bottle-feeding, pacifier use, and other sucking behaviors, was collected from self-administered questionnaires c

Influences of Cheek Support on Sucking Pressure During Bottle Feeding in Infants: A Pilot Study.

Effective sucking is important for shortening hospital stays in newborn infants. Several studies have demonstrated that oral support can improve sucking efficiency. However, the effects of oral support on sucking pressure have not been thoroughly investigated. In our previous study, we reported the equipment configuration and analysis method of sucking pressure. That method of measuring sucking pressure was applied to cheek support. In this study, four newborn infants with low birth weight, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, or multicystic encephalomalacia were enrolled. Their sucking pressures

HPA axis dysregulation and postpartum depression and anxiety symptoms in breastfeeding vs bottle-feeding parents.

OBJECTIVE: Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysregulation has been implicated in the pathogenesis of perinatal mood disorders. Further, HPA axis response is known to be blunted during breastfeeding. We hypothesized that 1) postpartum depression/anxiety symptoms would be associated with HPA axis dysregulation, indexed by loss of expected adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)-cortisol coupling, and 2) this association would vary by method of infant feeding. METHODS: Participants (N=222) intending to breastfeed were recruited in their 3rd trimester of pregnancy. During a lab visit at 2 mon

Supporting oral feeding in fragile infants: an evidence-based method for quality bottle-feedings of preterm, ill, and fragile infants.

Successful oral feeding of preterm and other ill and fragile infants is an interactive process that requires (1) sensitive, ongoing assessment of an infant's physiology and behavior, (2) knowledgeable decisions that support immediate and long-term enjoyment of food, and (3) competent skill in feeding. Caregivers can support feeding success by using the infant's biological and behavioral channels of communication to inform their feeding decisions and actions. The Supporting Oral Feeding in Fragile Infants (SOFFI) Method is described here with text, algorithms, and reference guides. Two of the a

Tongue movements and teat compression during bottle feeding: A pilot study of a quantitative ultrasound approach.

Nutritive sucking is a complex process, essential to proper growth and development. The complexity of this oral sensorimotor activity includes movements of the tongue and jaw. Tongue movements during nutritive sucking can only be visualized with instrumented methods such as ultrasound. Until now, studies using ultrasound during nutritive sucking performed measurements on each individual ultrasound image frame, which was quite time-consuming. The aim of this pilot study was to automatically process ultrasound video recordings in healthy infants during bottle feeding to measure teat compression

Swallowing Analyses of Neonates and Infants in Breastfeeding and Bottle-feeding: Impact on Videofluoroscopy Swallow Studies.

Introduction  Dysphagia, when left untreated, can result in an increase in morbidity and mortality rates, especially among infants with history of life-threatening neonatal diseases. The videofluoroscopy swallowing study (VFSS) is considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of dysphagia. There are few imaging studies of infant swallowing based on videofluoroscopy, none of which were performed during breast-feeding. Objective  To analyze the similarities and differences in infant swallowing function -regarding the feeding method - breast or bottle - and the impact on videofluoroscopy finding

Case Report: Comparative Evaluation of Breastfeeding and Bottle-Feeding With NeoSAFE in a Preterm Infant With Laryngomalacia.

BACKGROUND: Laryngomalacia is characterized by diminished laryngeal tone, leading to the dynamic prolapse of supraglottic tissues into the airway. This often results in inspiratory stridor, airway obstruction and feeding difficulties. This report presents quantitative data on respiratory-swallow coordination recorded by NeoSAFE during breastfeeding and bottle-feeding in a preterm infant with laryngomalacia. PRIMARY DIAGNOSIS: A preterm infant, born at 34 +3 weeks of gestation and weighing 2090 g, was diagnosed with laryngomalacia, confirmed by clinical symptoms including inspiratory stridor a

Microplastic release from the degradation of polypropylene feeding bottles during infant formula preparation.

Polypropylene-based products are commonly used for food preparation and storage, but their capacity to release microplastics is poorly understood. We investigated the potential exposure of infants to microplastics from consuming formula prepared in polypropylene (PP) infant feeding bottles (IFBs). Here, we show that PP IFBs release microplastics with values as high as 16,200,000 particles per litre. Scenario studies showed that PP IFB sterilization and exposure to high-temperature water significantly increase microplastic release. A 21-d test of PP IFBs showed periodic fluctuations in micropla

Home-made feeding bottles have inadequacies in their nutritional composition regardless of socioeconomic class.

Fifty-four and fifty samples of home-prepared feeding bottles for infants from a public health unit (low socioeconomic group, LSG) and from a private pediatric clinic (high socioeconomic group, HSG), respectively, were chemically analyzed, and their energy, macronutrient and iron contents were compared with the standard composition recommended for follow-up formulas. Cow's milk and sucrose and cereals added to the bottles were largely used in the study. Energy, protein and carbohydrate contents were higher than the recommended level in 75.9, 27.7 and 81.5% of LSG samples and 62.0, 48.0 and 34.

Quantifying the Impact of Common Feeding Interventions on Nutritive Sucking Performance Using a Commercially Available Smart Bottle.

An estimated 25% to 40% of infants experience difficulties with learning to breast- or bottle-feed. Yet, guidelines and evidence-based support for common feeding practices are limited. The objective of this case report was to quantify the impact of feeding interventions on nutritive sucking performance after discharge in an outpatient setting. This observational case series involved 2 infants. To determine the impact of cumulative interventions, pre- and postintervention effect sizes were calculated. Sucking performance metrics of interest included nipple movement peak sucking amplitude, durat
