PURPOSE: The refracting power of the corneal epithelium is relatively unknown. We measured the keratometric refracting power of the cornea on 15 eyes of patients undergoing photorefractive keratectomy with and without epithelium.
MATERIALS: The readings were performed with a videokeratoscope TMS-1. Three readings were averaged to obtain the mean and standard deviations.

An electron microscopic study of the cap areas of several pterygia shows the presence of active fibroblasts in the natural tissue planes surrounding Bowman's layer. The hypothesis is advanced that the fibroblasts originate in the limbal connective tissue. They advance in the cornea above and below Bowman's membrane, destroying the latter and a variable amount of superficial corneal stroma.

PURPOSE: To explore the histopathologic and ultrastructure changes of corneal dystrophies of bowman layer, type I (CDB I ) in Chinese.

The histopathology of a corneal graft specimen obtained from a patient with Scheie's syndrome (systemic mucopolysaccharidosis, type IS) is described with particular emphasis on the ultrastructural findings. BACKGROUND: The edges of radial keratotomy incisions remain separated by epithelium or new collagen. To determine if the amount of gape of the incision edges agrees with the induced corneal flattening, two mathematical models of the cornea were studied.
METHODS: A finite element model of the eye was constructed; radial incisions through Bowman's membrane and stroma were simulated, as well as incisions confined to the stroma but not involving Bowman's or Descemet's membranes. A granulomatous reaction was identified in six corneal buttons obtained from patients with herpetic stromal keratitis. PURPOSE: To describe the changes seen with the confocal microscope in Thygeson's superficial punctate keratopathy (TSPK).
METHODS: Confocal microscopy was performed on six patients with TSPK presenting to Manchester Royal Eye Hospital from October 1999 to June 2001. Both eyes were examined including the normal fellow eyes of two patients with unilateral TSPK. Images were compared with age-matched controls.
