BACKGROUND: Brachiocephalic vein aneurysm is a rare vascular malformation, which is often reported in case reports. At present it has attracted much attention due to the serious complications, such as vein aneurysm rupture, pulmonary embolism, venous thrombosis, etc. We report a case of left brachiocephalic vein aneurysm with compression symptoms.
CASE PRESENTATION: a 52-year-old male who was admitted to our hospital with irritating cough for more than 1 month. Chest contrast-enhanced CT showed a localized expansion of 5.2 cm in diameter of the left brachiocephalic vein in the anterior medias

OBJECTIVE: The left brachiocephalic vein (LBCV), or innominate vein, connects the left jugular vein to the right superior vena cava. Its course is posterior to the thymus and directly anterior and superior to the aortic arch. Pediatric and adult cardiology studies have reported on the subaortic or retrotracheal courses of the LBCV and the presence of double LBCV. We observed recently in the fetus that the LBCV may have a course through the thymus (intrathymic) or be absent in the presence of a left superior vena cava. The aim of this study was to report the prevalence of isolated intrathymic a

We report three patients with chronic renal failure in hemodialysis therapy, which had exhausted conventional venous access in the upper hemitórax (internal jugular, subclavian, axillary) for hemodialysis, primarily due to thrombosis of these veins by previous catheterization. We chose the technique of Rao et al. and cols for puncture of innominate vein, resulting in the implantation of catheters and their subsequent subcutaneous tunneling. Permanent catheters3 work properly and are permeable to the date after a period averaging 8 months.

The left brachiocephalic vein is found in an anomalous position less frequently than the superior vena cava or azygous channels in thoracic venous systems. We experienced a rare case of anomalous left brachiocephalic vein which was clearly demonstrated by spiral computed tomography (3D-CT). Although the malformation in itself seems to be of no functional importance, we assessed its importance in terms of associated conditions and its relevance to subsequent operations.

OBJECTIVE: To alert the radiologist to CT findings that suggest the correct diagnosis of anomalous left brachiocephalic vein.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors report two cases of anomalous left brachiocephalic vein diagnosed by spiral CT and CT angiography.
RESULTS: Spiral CT accurately depicted an anomalous left brachiocephalic vein, which ran between the ascending aorta and the trachea within the mediastinum to reach the right superior vena cava just below the entrance of the azygos vein.
CONCLUSION: Spiral CT combined with CT angiography is a very useful and minimally invasive techniqu

INTRODUCTION: Central venous catheter placement (CVC) in the neonatal population poses significant challenges, particularly for critically ill neonates with low birth weight and younger gestational age. Several devices and techniques can be used to place a CVC, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Ultrasound (US) guided central inserted central catheter (CICC) of the brachiocephalic vein (BCV) is a new approach that may be advantageous in case of difficult central venous access.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the feasibility and outcomes of the supraclavicular US guided cannulation of the BC

A 70-year-old man was scheduled for the robotic resection of a 21×16 × 30 mm thymic nodule incidentally detected by a computed tomography scan (CT) for thoracic trauma after a domestic accident. Positron emission tomography (PET) scan confirmed a low [18F]-FDG uptake (SUVmax = 1,9). During the surgery, the mass showed to be a saccular aneurysm of the left brachiocephalic vein (LBCV). A complete tangential resection of the aneurysm, with the use of EndoGIA stapler (Covidien® Endo GIA™) at its origin, was performed. The patient's recovery was uneventful, and postoperative CT with contrast admini

Aberrant left brachiocephalic vein is a rare condition. Its occurrence in patients requiring anterior cervicothoracic approach for severe kyphoscoliosis has not been described. A 16-year-old male with neurofibromatosis and severe upper thoracic kyphoscoliosis presented to us with curve progression. Halo gravity traction was attempted but failed to achieve significant correction. Subsequently, he underwent halo-pelvic traction and later Posterior Spinal Fusion (PSF) from C2 to T10. Second-stage anterior cervicothoracic approach with anterior fibula strut grafting was planned; however, preoperat

The left anomalous brachiocephalic vein is a rare anomaly without congenital heart disease. It is important to recognize this anomalous vein especially in patients with lung cancer because misinterpretation as a superior mediastinal lymph node enlargement may cause serious complications. We report a case of a 62-year-old lung cancer patient with left anomalous brachiocephalic vein, who underwent surgical treatment safely under video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery after confirmation of this anomaly on contrast-enhanced computed tomographic scan.

Malposition of a central venous hemodialysis catheter, mainly due to central vein stenosis or thrombosis, is not an uncommon complication. Herein, we present a rare cause of a left external jugular vein hemodialysis catheter, malpositioned into the ipsilateral internal jugular-subclavian venous route, due to a stenosed stent that has been placed into the ipsilateral brachiocephalic vein.

Revascularization of brachiocephalic arteries with prosthetic graft offers excellent patency for most reconstructions. For complex brachiocephalic reconstructions, such as redo operations or reconstructions for infection, autogenous conduit may be preferable. Occasionally saphenous vein is inadequate or absent. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the indications and intermediate-term outcomes of superficial femoral-popliteal vein (SFPV) as an alternative conduit for brachiocephalic reconstructions. Over a 6-year period, 71 patients underwent carotid, subclavian, or axillary artery bypass

The difficult insertion of a right subclavian catheter in a 63-year-old patient resulted in a pseudoaneurysm of the brachiocephalic artery requiring a resection-suture. The preventive measures of that complication are reminded.

The usefulness of CT and MR imaging (MRI) for the diagnosis of post-aortic left brachiocephalic vein (PALBV) is discussed. The subjects of the present study consisted of five patients with PALBV, two males and three females, aged four months to sixty years. Chest CT and MRI were performed as a follow-up study of other intrathoracic lesions in two cases, and for further examination of congenital heart diseases in two infant cases. The other patient underwent both CT and MRI to evaluate sporadic chest pain. Therefore, all PALBV were found incidentally. PALBV passes below the aortic arch in front

Thyroid gland carcinoma causing tumor thrombus in the great veins of the neck and mediastinum is a rare condition with poor prognosis. Invasion of the internal jugular vein by thyroid gland carcinoma has been occasionally reported, but tumor thrombi extending to the great veins of the mediastinum are reported extremely rarely. We present a treatment approach in a case of follicular thyroid carcinoma intravascular tumor thrombus in the left internal jugular and left brachiocephalic vein.

The purpose of this study was to elaborate on the anastomoses between the paraumbilical and systemic veins, particularly the ensiform veins. The connections with the ensiform veins have received little attention in the anatomical and radiological literature, and remain incompletely described. Too small to be reliably traced in normal CT scans, the paraumbilical veins can dilate in response to increased blood flow from systemic veins in superior vena cava obstruction (SVCO), allowing a study of their arrangement and connections. Collateral paraumbilical veins were therefore analyzed retrospecti

PURPOSE: We discuss a case of a brachiocephalic vein (BCV) perforation after Tesio® central venous catheter insertion.
METHOD AND RESULTS: An 80-year-old patient underwent an ultrasound-guided hemodialysis (HD) catheter placement via his left internal jugular vein (IJV). One day postoperatively, the patient became hemodynamically unstable immediately after HD initiation. As a vascular event was feared, an emergency CT scan was performed demonstrating a BCV perforation. The patient underwent a sternotomy, the lines were removed and the venous laceration was closed. The patient recovered well.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated findings on contrast-enhanced abdominal CT scans that suggest obstruction of the superior vena cava, brachiocephalic vein, or subclavian vein.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of 22 patients with superior vena caval, brachiocephalic vein, or subclavian vein obstruction and analyzed the upper abdominal images on a chest CT scan or an abdominal CT scan. We assessed collateral vessels in the upper abdomen to answer the following question: Did enhancement approach undiluted IV contrast or were there other findings? In the second part of our study,

Oftentimes, incidental findings are made on routine diagnostic imaging. An intra- and extravascular lipoma is one example of an important incidental finding. Intravascular lipomas are rare benign vascular tumors that are typically asymptomatic. They are most commonly found in the inferior vena cava but have also been recorded in the superior vena cava, brachiocephalic vein, subclavian vein, internal jugular vein, external jugular vein, and common femoral vein. Here, we presented the case of a 64-year-old female patient with an incidentally discovered intra- and extravascular lipoma affecting t
