Phenotypic and metabolic plasticity shapes life-history strategies under combinations of abiotic stresses.

Plants developed various reversible and non-reversible acclimation mechanisms to cope with the multifaceted nature of abiotic-stress combinations. We hypothesized that in order to endure these stress combinations, plants elicit distinctive acclimation strategies through specific trade-offs between reproduction and defense. To investigate Brachypodium distachyon acclimation strategies to combinations of salinity, drought and heat, we applied a system biology approach, integrating physiological, metabolic, and transcriptional analyses. We analyzed the trade-offs among functional and performance …

[Characterization of areas at parasitic risk for sheep reared under conditions of uncontrolled breeding on the ranges of the Causses. 1. Study methodology and its application to gastrointestinal strongyles].

A flock of 50 Lacaune ewes grazed three paddocks (approximately 17ha each) in rotation. Thirteen areas were defined in each of the two selec … were characterized by a vegetation with Bromus erectus associated either with Festuca duriuscula or Brachypodium pinnatum. The infectivity of each area (number of larvae X duration of grazing) was correlated to the number of strongyle eggs deposited, the amount of faeces accumulated and to an index of pasture quality (pastoral value X biomass of available gras …

De novo genome assembly of Texas wintergrass (Nassella leucotricha (Trin. & Rupr.) Pohl) supports diagnostic marker development and phylogenetic analysis of species within the family Poaceae.

Texas wintergrass is a cool-season perennial bunchgrass native to North America with ecological and agronomic importance as a winter forage … demonstrating use for genetic diversity analysis. Reference-guided alignment and scaffolding using Brachypodium distachyon and Oryza sativa provided comparative frameworks for evaluating conserved sequence relationships between Texas wintergrass and representative grass genomes. Our results establish a genomic resource for Texas wintergrass, supporting future …

Evolutionary modes of emergence of short interspersed nuclear element (SINE) families in grasses.

Short interspersed nuclear elements (SINEs) are non-autonomous transposable elements which are propagated by retrotransposition and constitute an inherent part of the genome of most eukaryotic species. Knowledge of heterogeneous and highly abundant SINEs is crucial for de novo (or improvement of) annotation of whole genome sequences. We scanned Poaceae genome sequences of six important cereals (Oryza sativa, Triticum aestivum, Hordeum vulgare, Panicum virgatum, Sorghum bicolor, Zea mays) and Brachypodium distachyon to examine the diversity and evolution of SINE populations. We comparatively an…

SPEECHLESS duplication in grasses expands potential for environmental regulation of stomatal development.

Plants regulate stomatal development and function to acquire atmospheric carbon dioxide for photosynthesis while minimizing water loss. The ancestral basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor (TF) gene that drove stomata production in early land plants diversified to become paralogs SPEECHLESS (SPCH), MUTE, and FAMA. Extant grasses exhibit a particularly interesting set of duplications and losses of SPCH. Using phylogenetic methods, we tracked the history of SPCH duplications. Brachypodium distachyon and Oryza sativa plants bearing mutations in either SPCH1 or SPCH2, and B. distachyon plants…

In planta Production and Validation of Neuraminidase Derived from Genotype 4 Reassortant Eurasian Avian-like H1N1 Virus as a Vaccine Candidate.

Influenza viruses are a major public health threat that causes repetitive outbreaks. In recent years, genotype 4 (G4) reassortant Eurasian a … cassette to enhance the translation of G4NA. In addition, the family 3 cellulose-binding module and Brachypodium distachyon small ubiquitin-like modifier sequences were used to enable the cost-effective purification and removal of unnecessary domains after purification, respectively. The G4NA produced in plants displayed high solubility and assembled as a tetr …

Lr34 multi-pathogen resistance ABC transporter: molecular analysis of homoeologous and orthologous genes in hexaploid wheat and other grass species.

The Triticum aestivum (bread wheat) disease resistance gene Lr34 confers durable, race non-specific protection against three fungal pathogen … ere detected in the genomes of Oryza sativa (rice) and Sorghum bicolor (sorghum). Zea mays (maize), Brachypodium distachyon and Hordeum vulgare (barley) lacked Lr34 orthologs, indicating independent deletion of this particular ABC transporter. Lr34 was part of a gene-rich island on the wheat D genome. We found gene colinearity on the homoeologous A and B genom …

Adaptive phenology of desert and Mediterranean populations of annual plants grown with and without water stress.

The dynamics of vegetative and reproductive growth were compared in matched pairs of Mediteranean and desert populations of three unrelated annual species, Erucaria hispanica (L.) Druce, Brachypodium distachyon (L.) Beauv. and Bromus fasciculatus C. Presl., under high and low levels of water availability in a common-environment experiment. Plants of all desert populations showed earlier switches to reproductive development and to subsequent phenophases, and the transition to flowering occurred at smaller plant sizes. Water stress had no effect (E. hispanica) or slightly accelerated the transit…
