The authors present the results of an investigation studying the resolution of vasogenic brain edema using cold injury in cats. The appearance of RISA-I131 and sucrose-C14 lebeled edema fluid in the ventricular cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was assessed by means of ventriculocisternal perfusion. The effect of low- or high-pressure perfusion on edema spread was determined by measuring the water, sodium, RISA-I131, and sucrose-C14 content of serial tissue blocks taken from the injured cortex through the white matter to the ventricular ependyma. The findings indicate that increasing the hydrostatic p

Various degrees of peritumoral brain edema (PTBE) are observed in patients with intracranial meningiomas. Factors affecting the occurrence of PTBE in intracranial meningioma were investigated. PTBE was investigated retrospectively for 110 patients with primary intracranial meningiomas. Predictive factors related to PTBE were analyzed, for example patient age, sex, magnetic resonance imaging features (contrast enhancement, tumor shape, tumor location, tumor volume), angiographical features (tumor stain, pial-cortical arterial supply, venous obstruction), and histopathological features (histolog

Objective: This study evaluated iron overload after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) using ESWAN sequences. Methods: This single-center prospective observational cohort study enrolled supratentorial ICH patients. MRI was obtained with a 3.0-T scanner at day 1, day 14, day 30, and follow-up (300 days or later). R2* mapping was generated based on the ESWAN. R2* value of the ipsilateral side represented iron deposition, and the R2* value of the contralateral side served as control. R2* value was adjusted by volume and used to assess total iron overload. Brain edema was measured on T2 FLAIR-weighted

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) outcomes are notably affected by brain edema. A recent report by Hussain et al. unveils a unique form, glymphatic-stagnated brain edema, that stems from impaired glymphatic and lymphatic drainage induced by noradrenergic activation. Consequently, pan-noradrenergic inhibition may emerge as an innovative treatment for TBI-related edema, challenging traditional therapeutic approaches.

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) accounts for about 10% of all strokes in the United States of America causing a high degree of disability and mortality. There is initial (primary) brain injury due to the mechanical disruption caused by the hematoma. There is then secondary injury, triggered by the initial injury but also the release of various clot-derived factors (e.g., thrombin and hemoglobin). ICH alters brain fluid homeostasis. Apart from the initial hematoma mass, ICH causes blood-brain barrier disruption and parenchymal cell swelling, which result in brain edema and intracranial hypertens

Cerebral edema is very common in patients with acute liver failure and encephalopathy. In severe cases, it produces brain tissue shift and potentially fatal herniation. Brain swelling in acute liver failure is produced by a combination of cytotoxic (cellular) and vasogenic edema. Accumulation of ammonia and glutamine leads to disturbances in the regulation of cerebral osmolytes, increased free radical production and calcium-mediated mitochondrial injury, and alterations in glucose metabolism (inducing high levels of brain lactate), resulting in astrocyte swelling. Activation of inflammatory cy

Idiopathic hypertrophic cranial pachymeningitis (IHCP) consists of meningeal thickening due to chronic inflammation for which no cause such as infection, specific granulomatous disease, or malignancy is demonstrable. We present a case of IHCP with perifocal brain edema suggesting mass lesion with its magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and pathologic findings. A 36-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital in August 2001 with a complaint of motor weakness in her left leg for 1 month. Magnetic resonance imaging with gadolinium revealed enhancement of the thickened dura mater and perifocal edema

Forty supratentorial meningiomas were analyzed to identify factors causing peritumoral brain edema. Parasagittal, sphenoid ridge, and olfactory groove meningiomas induced edema more frequently than those in other locations. Meningothelial meningiomas were more invasive than other types and were associated with more peritumoral edema. Brain edema correlated significantly with tumor size and histological evidence of leptomeningeal and cortical damage from the tumor. Larger tumors destroy the leptomeninges and cerebral cortex, allowing direct transmission of edema fluid into the white matter, res

Mortality is high among patients developing post-traumatic brain oedema and increased intracranial pressure following severe head injury. Although routine treatment varies from one centre to another it often includes one or more of such measures as hyperventilation, high-dose barbiturate therapy, osmotherapy or the drainage of cerebrospinal fluid. The preservation of high cerebral perfusion pressure is fundamental to traditional treatment, often combined with inotropic support, as ischemia is considered to be a crucial factor with regard to the development of secondary injuries and oedema in t

Thirty male Wistar rats, weighing 200 to 300 g, were used for this study. During a 3- to 4-min period, 300 micrograms of 6-OHDA was injected stereotactically into the right lateral ventricle. The same amount of saline was injected into the ventricle for the control group. Seven days after this procedure, the right common carotid was occluded with a clip and 4 to 6 ml of blood was removed from the external jugular vein to reduce the blood pressure. The clip was removed in 2 hr, and blood flow was maintained for 1 hr. The SG of cerebral tissue was measured according to the method of Marmarou et

We reported five cases of lateral ventricle tumors all of which developed severe brain edema between 9 days and 8 years after surgery. Follow-up study with serial computed tomography before and after surgery were presented. Based on a review of the literature, a possible causal mechanism is suggested: 1) The cerebrospinal fluid diffuses into the white matter through the surgically damaged ependyma and caused severe postoperative edema; and 2) surgical blockade of the flow of cerebral interstitial fluid to drain into the fenestrated vessels of the choroid plexus and other periventricular areas

The water in normal and edematous brain tissues of rats was studied by the pulse nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique, measuring the longitudinal relaxation time (T1) and the transverse relaxation time (T2). In the normal brain, T1 and T2 were single components, both shorter than in pure water. Prolongation and separation of T2 into two components, one fast and one slow, were the characteristic findings in brain edema induced by both cold injury and triethyl tin (TET), although some differences between the two types of edema existed in the content of the lesion and in the degree of chang

Most studies of clinically relevant cerebral edema emphasize the effect of added tissue fluid in white matter on gross distortion with transtentorial and subfalcine brain herniation. Our recent studies on altered tissue fluid compartmentation in cerebral gray matter suggest that significant microdistortion of relationships of capillaries to subserved tissue follows swelling of astroglia therein. Grave consequences to solute and gas exchange in focal regions may well be expected and are emphasized. The elucidation of the mechanisms of formation and inhibition of astroglial swelling by chemical

Water serves as the primary substance in all living cells and is an essential molecule involved in numerous biological processes critical for maintaining homeostasis in the central nervous system (CNS). Disruptions in water balance can occur in conditions such as cerebral edema, where fluid accumulation results in increased intracranial pressure (ICP). Aquaporins (AQPs) are transmembrane proteins that play a vital role in the rapid transport of water across cell membranes. Various subtypes of AQPs (AQP1, AQP3, AQP4, AQP5, AQP6, AQP7, AQP8, AQP9, and AQP11) have been identified in brain tissue.

BACKGROUND: Brain edema is a rare and serious complication of assisted reproductive technology (ART). The increased intracranial pressure and injured brain parenchyma are life-threatening and may even result in death. The pathogenesis may involve increased vascular permeability mediated by vascular endothelial growth factor and other vasoactive substances, including interleukin 6, interleukin 1β, angiotensin II, insulin-like growth factor 1, transforming growth factor β, and the renin-angiotensin system.
CASE PRESENTATION: We presented a unique case report of a 29-year-old woman developed sud

BACKGROUND: We aim was to review the basic concepts and to analyze the current management of cerebral edema following acute head trauma (AHT).
METHOD: Cerebral edema should be recognized and treated early and aggressively to avoid disastrous results such as cerebral herniation. After clinical evaluation and early cardiorespiratory stabilization, the patients should be treated with the elevation of head, oxygen, mannitol, hyperventilation, and sedation-myorelaxation and may avoid from hypotension-hypoxia. If these treatments be unsuccessful, barbiturates may be used. There are also other possi

The clinical experience with a new fluid therapy in children with acute brain edema complicated by infectious disease is reported. The clinical data of a retrospective group of 192 patients and a prospective study of 1,302 and 2,279 patients is summarized. One method of fluid therapy for children with acute brain edema is traditional; fluid intake is restricted to less than 1,200 mL/m(2) daily (60 mL/kg daily). Another method is the new fluid therapy regimen used in our prospective study, in which dehydration and fluid replenishment are individualized. On the first day the fluid intake of pati
