The Brain Waves During Reaching Tasks in People with Subacute Low Back Pain: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Subacute low back pain (sLBP) is a critical transitional phase between acute and chronic stages and is key in determining the progression to chronic pain. While persistent pain has been linked to changes in brain activity, studies have focused mainly on acute and chronic phases, leaving neural changes during the subacute phase-especially during movement-under-researched. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate changes in brain activity and the impact of pain intensity in individuals with sLBP during rest and reaching movements. Using a 28-electrode EEG, we measured motor-related brain

Oral ascorbic acid 2-glucoside prevents coordination disorder induced via laser-induced shock waves in rat brain.

Oxidative stress is considered to be involved in the pathogenesis of primary blast-related traumatic brain injury (bTBI). We evaluated the effects of ascorbic acid 2-glucoside (AA2G), a well-known antioxidant, to control oxidative stress in rat brain exposed to laser-induced shock waves (LISWs). The design consisted of a controlled animal study using male 10-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats. The study was conducted at the University research laboratory. Low-impulse (54 Pa•s) LISWs were transcranially applied to rat brain. Rats were randomized to control group (anesthesia and head shaving, n = 10),

P-Wave Duration Is Associated With Aging Patterns in Structural Brain Networks.

BACKGROUND: Impaired cardiac function is associated with cognitive impairment and brain imaging features of aging. Cardiac arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation, are implicated in clinical and subclinical brain injuries. Even in the absence of a clinical diagnosis, subclinical or prodromal substrates of arrhythmias, including an abnormally long or short P-wave duration (PWD), a measure associated with atrial abnormalities, have been associated with stroke and cognitive decline. However, the extent to which PWD has subclinical influences on overall aging patterns of the brain is not clearl

Dynamic brain network states in human generalized spike-wave discharges.

Generalized spike-wave discharges in idiopathic generalized epilepsy are conventionally assumed to have abrupt onset and offset. However, in rodent models, discharges emerge during a dynamic evolution of brain network states, extending several seconds before and after the discharge. In human idiopathic generalized epilepsy, simultaneous EEG and functional MRI shows cortical regions may be active before discharges, and network connectivity around discharges may not be normal. Here, in human idiopathic generalized epilepsy, we investigated whether generalized spike-wave discharges emerge during

A 3-D Rat Brain Model for Blast-Wave Exposure: Effects of Brain Vasculature and Material Properties.

Exposure to blast waves is suspected to cause primary traumatic brain injury. However, existing finite-element (FE) models of the rat head lack the necessary fidelity to characterize the biomechanical responses in the brain due to blast exposure. They neglect to represent the cerebral vasculature, which increases brain stiffness, and lack the appropriate brain material properties characteristic of high strain rates observed in blast exposures. To address these limitations, we developed a high-fidelity three-dimensional FE model of a rat head. We explicitly represented the rat's cerebral vascul

Beyond spectral power and connectivity: Electroencephalographic (EEG) travelling waves reveal altered spatiotemporal dynamics after traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is linked to persistent cognitive and functional impairment, yet its long-term effects on the spatiotemporal organization of brain activity remain unclear. Electroencephalography (EEG) studies have reported spectral power and functional connectivity (FC) abnormalities following TBI, but little is known about whether injury also disrupts propagating oscillatory activity such as travelling waves. Resting-state EEG was analysed from a large clinical dataset (Temple University Hospital EEG Corpus) including 174 individuals with TBI and 174 age- and sex-matched non-TBI

Rogue bioelectrical waves in the brain: the Hurst exponent as a potential measure for presurgical mapping in epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Brain electromagnetic activity in patients with epilepsy is characterized by abnormal high-amplitude transient events (spikes) and abnormal patterns of synchronization of brain rhythms that accompany epileptic seizures. With the aim of improving methods for identifying epileptogenic sources in magnetoencephalographic (MEG) recordings of brain data, we applied methods previously used in the study of oceanic 'rogue waves' and other freak events in complex systems. APPROACH: For data from three patients who were awaiting surgical treatment for epilepsy, we used a beamformer source mod

From Gut Microbiota to Brain Waves: The Potential of the Microbiome and EEG as Biomarkers for Cognitive Impairment.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder and a leading cause of dementia. Aging is a significant risk factor for AD, emphasizing the importance of early detection since symptoms cannot be reversed once the advanced stage is reached. Currently, there is no established method for early AD diagnosis. However, emerging evidence suggests that the microbiome has an impact on cognitive function. The gut microbiome and the brain communicate bidirectionally through the gut-brain axis, with systemic inflammation identified as a key connection that may contribute to AD. Gut dysb

Noninvasive Intelligent Brain-Metasurface System for Real-Time Electromagnetic Wave Manipulation.

A noninvasive intelligent brain-computer interface (BCI) is integrated with a reconfigurable metasurface to establish a direct neural-to-electromagnetic transduction pathway for real-time, multimodal wave control. By combining convolutional-neural-network-based decoding of motor-imagery electroencephalography (EEG) signals with threshold-based recognition of electrooculography (EOG) commands, the proposed system converts neural and ocular activities into high-speed control commands, which are subsequently implemented through an FPGA-driven dual-polarized reconfigurable metasurface for real-tim

EEG microstates are correlated with brain functional networks during slow-wave sleep.

Electroencephalography (EEG) microstates have been extensively studied in wakefulness and have been described as the "atoms of thought". Previous studies of EEG have found four microstates, i.e., microstates A, B, C and D, that are consistent among participants across the lifespan during the resting state. Studies using simultaneous EEG and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have provided evidence for correlations between EEG microstates and fMRI networks during the resting state. Microstates have also been found during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. Slow-wave sleep (SWS) is co

Measurement of blast wave by a miniature fiber optic pressure transducer in the rat brain.

Exposure to blast wave that is generated during an explosion may result in brain damage and related neurological impairments. The aim of this study was to investigate pressure changes induced by exposure to blast inside the rat brain. For intracranial pressure measurement we used a miniature optic fiber sensor (o.d. 550 microm) with a computer recording system. The sensor was placed in the third cerebral ventricle of anesthetized rats exposed to 40 kPa blast wave in a pneumatic-pressure driven shock tube. Short pressure waves lasting several ms were detected inside the brain with the magnitude

[Monitoring of intracranial pressure in patients with brain tumors. Clinical study of the A wave mechanism].

Intracranial pressure (ICP) was continuously monitored in 70 patients with brain tumors. Simultaneous recording of respiration and systemic blood pressure was carried out in 20 and 13 cases, respectively. In 13 of the former 20 cases, blood gases were analyzed during typical A waves (Lundberg's A wave). In addition, in four cases cerebral blood flow (CBF) was measured during typical A waves. The A wave appeared when the baseline ICP exceeded 20 mmHg, and the higher the baseline pressure was, the more frequently the A wave was recorded. Three respiratory patterns occurred during typical A waves

Associations of Brain Morphology and Cognitive Function With Ambulatory Estimated Pulse Wave Velocity.

BACKGROUND: Inconsistent links between arterial stiffness and cognition may reflect limited cognitive tests and unaccounted diurnal pulse wave velocity variation. To bridge this knowledge gap, we investigated 24-hour ambulatory estimated pulse wave velocity (ePWV) and its association with dementia-related neuroimaging and cognitive function in hypertension. METHODS: We assessed 893 patients with hypertension aged ≥50 years (mean age, 67.2 years; 52.3% women), including brain magnetic resonance imaging (n=545), global cognitive testing (n=623), and ambulatory ePWV measurements.
