Brain-computer interface in paralysis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Communication with patients suffering from locked-in syndrome and other forms of paralysis is an unsolved challenge. Movement restoration for patients with chronic stroke or other brain damage also remains a therapeutic problem and available treatments do not offer significant improvements. This review considers recent research in brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) as promising solutions to these challenges. RECENT FINDINGS: Experimentation with nonhuman primates suggests that intentional goal directed movements of the upper limbs can be reconstructed and transmitted to exter

EEG-based affective brain-computer interfaces: recent advancements and future challenges.

Objective. As one of the most popular brain-computer interface (BCI) paradigms, affective BCI (aBCI) decodes the human emotional states from brain signals and imposes necessary feedback to achieve neural regulation when negative emotional states (i.e. depression, anxiety) are detected, which are considered as the two basic functions of aBCI systems. Electroencephalogram (EEG) is the scalp reflection of neural activities and has been regarded as the gold standard of emotional effects. Recently, rapid progresses have been made for emotion recognition and regulation with the purpose of constructi

Brain-Computer Interfaces in Spinal Cord Injury: A Promising Therapeutic Strategy.

The current treatment regimen for spinal cord injury (SCI), a neurological disorder with a high incidence of disability, is based on early surgical decompression and administration of pharmacological agents. However, the efficacy of such an approach remains limited, and most patients have sensory and functional deficits below the level of injury, which seriously affects their quality of life. This necessitates further exploration into effective treatment modalities. In recent years, considerable advancements have been made in developing and utilizing brain-computer interfaces (BCI), which faci

Bioinspired Heat-Induced Viscoelasticity-Switchable Electrodes for Conformal Brain-Computer Interfaces.

Electroencephalography is a promising noninvasive modality for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), yet its widespread adoption is constrained by electrode limitations: dry electrodes yield unstable signals, whereas wet electrodes require laborious setup and are ill-suited to wearable devices. Inspired by honeybees that locally heat beeswax to reversibly switch it between rigid and moldable states for comb construction, this work introduces a heat-induced viscoelasticity-switchable electrode (HIVE) that enables conformal contact on hairy scalps and user-friendly operation in wearable systems. Benchmarking motor imagery algorithms for pediatric users of brain-computer interfaces.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) can enable opportunities for self-expression and life participation for children with severe neurological disabilities. Unfortunately, the development and evaluation of state-of-the-art algorithms has largely neglected pediatric users. This work tests 12 state-of-the-art algorithms for motor imagery classification on three datasets of typically developing pediatric users (n=94 ages 5-17). When all datasets were combined, there were no significant differences between most non-deep learning algorithms, with all having a mean AUC score of 0.64 or 0.65. All the non

Critical issues using brain-computer interfaces for augmentative and alternative communication.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) may potentially be of significant practical value to patients in advanced stages of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and locked-in syndrome for whom conventional augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems, which require some measure of consistent voluntary muscle control, are not satisfactory options. However, BCIs have primarily been used for communication in laboratory research settings. This article discusses 4 critical issues that should be addressed as BCIs are translated out of laboratory settings to become fully functional BCI/AAC systems that

Brain-computer interfaces based on the steady-state visual-evoked response.

The Air Force Research Laboratory has implemented and evaluated two brain-computer interfaces (BCI's) that translate the steady-state visual evoked response into a control signal for operating a physical device or computer program. In one approach, operators self-regulate the brain response; the other approach uses multiple evoked responses.

Calibration-Free Online Detection in Wearable Motor Imagery Brain-Computer Interfaces.

Motor imagery brain-computer interfaces (MI-BCIs) remain challenging for practical use due to their reliance on multi-channel EEG devices and long calibration. To address these limitations, we proposed a wearable system for calibration-free online decoding using a lightweight, few-channel EEG headband, enabling portability, ease of use, and rapid setup. Specifically, we first built a large-scale wearable MI-EEG dataset from 100 healthy subjects to train a subject-independent model. We then developed a CNN-based temporal convolutional network (CTCNet) for online MI detection, which reduced comp

Fatigue in children using motor imagery and P300 brain-computer interfaces.

BACKGROUND: Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology offers children with quadriplegic cerebral palsy unique opportunities for communication, environmental exploration, learning, and game play. Research in adults demonstrates a negative impact of fatigue on BCI enjoyment, while effects on BCI performance are variable. To date, there have been no pediatric studies of BCI fatigue. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of two different BCI paradigms, motor imagery and visual P300, on the development of self-reported fatigue and an electroencephalography (EEG) biomarker of fatigue i

Motor somatotopy impacts imagery strategy success in human intracortical brain-computer interfaces.

Objective:The notion of a somatotopically organized motor cortex, with movements of different body parts being controlled by spatially distinct areas of cortex, is well known. However, recent studies have challenged this notion and suggested a more distributed representation of movement control. This shift in perspective has significant implications, particularly when considering the implantation location of electrode arrays for intracortical brain-computer interfaces (iBCIs). We sought to evaluate whether the location of neural recordings from the precentral gyrus, and thus the underlying som
