African mustard (Brassica tournefortii) as source of nutrients and nutraceuticals properties.

Brassica tournefortii is an annual herbaceous plant, native to the North Africa and Middle East. It is considered as an excellent medicinal plant due to its richness by antioxidant like isothiocyanates and polyphenols. The present study is the first phytochemical investigation on Brassica tournefortii organs (leaves, stems, and roots) in terms of nutraceutical, chemical composition, and bioactivity. Brassica tournefortii leaves exhibited the highest values of nutraceutical contents. Interestingly, gas chromatograph-y-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis enabled to identify three new isothiocyana

Impacts of Whole-Genome Triplication on MIRNA Evolution in Brassica rapa.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of short non-coding, endogenous RNAs that play essential roles in eukaryotes. Although the influence of whole-genome triplication (WGT) on protein-coding genes has been well documented in Brassica rapa, little is known about its impacts on MIRNAs. In this study, through generating a comprehensive annotation of 680 MIRNAs for B. rapa, we analyzed the evolutionary characteristics of these MIRNAs from different aspects in B. rapa. First, while MIRNAs and genes show similar patterns of biased distribution among subgenomes of B. rapa, we found that MIRNAs are much mor

Hepatogenous photosensitisation in cows grazing turnips (Brassica rapa) in South Africa.

Holstein cows on a farm in the Humansdorp district, Eastern Cape province, South Africa, developed reddened, painful teat skin 3 days after grazing a mixed forage crop dominated by bulb turnip (Brassica rapa, Barkant cultivar). The crop was grazed 45 days after planting and 10% of the herd developed symptoms. More characteristic non-pigmented skin lesions started manifesting 1-2 days after the appearance of the teat lesions. Affected cows had elevated serum activities of gamma-glutamyl transferase, glutamate dehydrogenase and aspartate aminotransferase. These blood chemistry findings confirmed

Heterodera schachtii nematodes interfere with aphid-plant relations on Brassica oleracea.

Aboveground and belowground herbivore species modify plant defense responses differently. Simultaneous attack can lead to non-additive effects on primary and secondary metabolite composition in roots and shoots. We previously found that aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae) population growth on Brassica oleracea was reduced on plants that were infested with nematodes (Heterodera schachtii) prior (4 weeks) to aphid infestation. Here, we examined how infection with root-feeding nematodes affected primary and secondary metabolites in the host plant and whether this could explain the increase in aphid dou

Cadmium stress responses in Brassica juncea: hints from proteomics and metabolomics.

Among heavy metal stressors, cadmium (Cd) pollution is one leading threat to the environment. In this view, research efforts have been increasingly put forward to promote the individuation of phytoextractor plants that are capable of accumulating and withstanding the toxic metals, including Cd, in the aerial parts. We hereby adopted the hyperaccumulator B. juncea (Indian mustard) as a model to investigate plant responses to Cd stress at low (25 μM) and high (100 μM) doses. Analytical strategies included mass-spectrometry-based determination of Cd and the assessment of its effect on the leaf pr

Balance of glucosinolates content under Cd stress in two Brassica species.

We designed a pot experiment to study the changes of growth parameters, accumulation of Cd in cabbage and kale, during a prolonged exposure period with two harvests (after 45 and 75 days of plant growth). Simultaneously, we monitored changes of total S and GSL contents in different plant organs. Both Brassica species showed tolerance to Cd, since no obvious symptoms of metal toxicity were displayed and no significantly reduced plant biomass were recorded. Moreover, a trend of root biomass enhancement was noticed. In general, the Cd concentration in roots was higher than in other organs. Data i

Exploring the functional roles of secondary metabolites in Brassica defense networks.

Plants produce a diverse array of secondary metabolites (SMs) that play critical roles in adaptation to environmental challenges and defense against pathogens and herbivores. Brassica species accumulate a wide range of SMs, including glucosinolates and their hydrolysis products (isothiocyanates, nitriles, thiocyanates, epithionitriles, and oxazolidinethiones), phenolics, tannins, cyanogenic glycosides, alkaloids, flavonoids, and terpenoids. These compounds function as defense molecules, antioxidants, signaling mediators, and regulators of plant growth and stress responses. This review summariz

Foliar Residual Toxicity of Insecticides to Brassica Pests and Their Natural Enemies.

Overuse of pesticides can result in the development of resistance, secondary pest outbreaks, and pest resurgence due to a reduction in natural enemies. The present study compares the residual toxicity of lambda-cyhalothrin, a relatively nonselective insecticide, with abamectin, indoxacarb, and spinosad, compounds which have been reported to be less harmful to arthropod natural enemies. Two key cosmopolitan pests of crucifer crops, (Plutella xylostella) and (Myzus persicae), and two of their respective hymenopteran parasitoids, (Cotesia vestalis) and (Aphidius colemani) were used as representat

Reprotoxic effects of the systemic insecticide fipronil on the butterfly Pieris brassicae.

In addition to controlling pest organisms, the systemic neurotoxic pesticide fipronil can also have adverse effects on beneficial insects and other non-target organisms. Here, we report on the sublethal effects of fipronil on the farmland butterfly Pieris brassicae. Caterpillars were reared on plants that had been grown from seeds coated with fipronil or on leaf discs topically treated with a range of fipronil dosages (1-32 µg kg-1 on dry mass basis). Females that had developed on fipronil plants laid ca half the number of eggs than females that had developed on control plants. In the bioassay

Effect of host change on demographic fitness of the parasitoid, Trichogramma brassicae.

Trichogramma brassicae (Bezdenko) is the most important species of Trichogramma parasitoids in Iran. The cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) is a polyphagous insect pest that attacks many crops including cotton, maize, soybean, tomato, etc. The bollworm egg is a suitable target for many Trichogramma species. Factitious hosts such as eggs of the flour moth, Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) and cereal moth, Sitotroga cerealella (Hubner) are used for mass rearing purposes. But a problem that arises sometimes in laboratory cultures is the development of a tendency toward laboratory hosts fo

In vitro and in vivo antioxidant effects of mustard leaf (Brassica juncea).

To investigate the antioxidant activity of mustard leaf (Brassica juncea), we prepared four fractions (CH(2)Cl(2), EtOAc, BuOH and H(2)O fractions) and examined their radical scavenging activities in vitro and in vivo. Based on the in vitro results of spin trapping and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical, we carried out an in vivo study with the BuOH fraction to investigate its effect on oxidative stress in rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes. We found that in comparison with untreated diabetic control rats, oral administration of the BuOH fraction (100 or 200 mg/kg body weight/day for

Waterlogging stress reshapes epigenetic regulation of gene expression in Brassica napus.

Waterlogging stress significantly impairs early development and yield in Brassica napus, yet the underlying epigenetic regulatory mechanisms remain poorly understood. We applied a multi-omics strategy integrating RNA-seq, WGBS, and ChIP-seq to dissect multi-layered regulatory dynamics during waterlogging stress and recovery. We found that waterlogging stress globally repressed gene expression and enhanced expression divergence between homoeologous genes of the two subgenomes. Transposable element (TE) activation, together with dynamic epigenetic changes, is associated with altered expression o

Herbicidal potential of Brassica spp. essential oil: phytotoxicity and environmental impact.

Brassica spp. (mustard) essential oils (EOs), rich in bioactive isothiocyanates, offer significant potential as natural herbicides for effective weed management. In this study, emulsions and nanoemulsions (NEms) of B. juncea I, B. nigra and B. juncea II EOs were formulated and evaluated for phytotoxic effects against major weeds associated with Triticum aestivum and Oryza sativa. EO emulsions exhibited concentration-dependent phytotoxicity, resulting in complete germination inhibition at 1.0% to 2.0%, 1.5% to 3.0% and 2.0% to 3.5% for B. juncea I, B. nigra and B. juncea II EOs, respectively, d

Insect pests in Brassica napus crops: toward ecologically optimized integrated pest management.

Conventional Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in Brassica napus often relies on the additive combination of control tactics. This review highlights the potential of ecologically optimized IPM strategies integrating habitat manipulation, behavioral conditioning, and evolutionary-informed approaches to optimize pest suppression. Habitat diversification, including intercropping, companion and banker plants, crop rotation, and landscape management, enhances natural enemy abundance and modifies pest behavior. Complementing this, natural enemy behavioral conditioning may improve host detection, fora

Enhanced cadmium phytoextraction in Brassica juncea by a hyperaccumulator-sourced synthetic inoculant.

Synthetic communities (SynComs) of plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) could enhance cadmium (Cd) phytoextraction and promote plant growth in Brassica juncea L. However, the precise molecular mechanisms of facilitated Cd uptake and accumulation remain unclear. Here, using a Cd-specific fluorescent probe, we demonstrated that SynComs application markedly improved Cd distribution and uptake within plant roots. Integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses under Cd stress revealed that SynComs mitigate Cd-induced stress by activating plant antioxidative defense system, encompassing antiox

Phytoremediation potential of Indian Mustard (Brassica juncea L.) for Ciprofloxacin contaminated soil.

The present study aimed to explore the potential of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L.) for phytoremediation of soil contaminated with ciprofloxacin. The antibiotic ciprofloxacin was selected due to its rapidly increasing presence in soil. It is widely used in both livestock and human healthcare, making it the most prescribed drug. To address the remediation of ciprofloxacin in soil, a controlled greenhouse study was performed. B. juncea L. germinated seeds were sown in triplicates with ciprofloxacin concentrations of 50 mg kg-1 to 300 mg kg-1 for three weeks. To assess ciprofloxacin uptake by

CaO -catalyzed trans-esterification of brassica carinata seed oil for biodiesel production.

Brassica carinata seed is a non-edible oil containing crop grown for oil-based product development like biodiesel synthesis. However, recently technical challenges such as availability of feedstock, type of catalyst, cost, and quality of biodiesel hindered the feasibility and utilization of biodiesel. Thus, this study addressed those problems under the production of fatty acid methyl ester through trans-esterification reaction in the presence of heterogeneous catalyst ( CaO ), and methanol alcohol from Ethiopian brassica carinata seed oil. The synergetic and antagonistic effects of selected p

Distinct redox signalling and nickel tolerance in Brassica juncea and Arabidopsis thaliana.

Despite of its essentiality, nickel (Ni) in excess is toxic for plants partly due to the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the consequent increase in oxidative stress signalling. However, in Ni-stressed plants little is known about the signal transduction of reactive nitrogen species (RNS) and protein tyrosine nitration as the protein-level consequence of increased RNS formation. Our experiments compared the nickel accumulation and tolerance, the redox signalling and the protein nitration in the agar-grown Arabidopsis thaliana and Brassica juncea exposed to Ni (50 μM nickel c
