Studies of glycemia and glucosuria in diabetics after breakfast meals of different composition.

In series I, The effect of four isocaloric, ordinary diabetic breakfast meals on the blood glucose level and on the urinary glucose loss was tested in 9 adult diabetes and three healthy subjects (ages 60 to 75) as well as in five insulin-treated diabetics (ages 18 to 40). All breakfasts derived 20% of the energy from protein, 35% from fat, and 45% from carbohydrates (CHO). The oligosaccharides amounted to 5, 30, 45, and 65% of CHO, respectively. In series II, four isocaloric breakfast meals with CHO amounting to 35 or 70% of the energy, oligosaccharides furnishing one-third or two-thirds of th

A randomized crossover, pilot study examining the effects of a normal protein vs. high protein breakfast on food cravings and reward signals in overweight/obese "breakfast skipping", late-adolescent girls.

BACKGROUND: This pilot study examined whether the addition of a normal protein (NP) vs. high protein (HP) breakfast leads to alterations in food cravings and plasma homovanillic acid (HVA), which is an index of central dopamine production, in overweight/obese 'breakfast skipping' late-adolescent young women. METHODS: A randomized crossover design was incorporated in which 20 girls (age 19 ± 1 y; BMI 28.6 ± 0.7 kg/m2) consumed 350 kcal NP (13 g protein) breakfast meals, 350 kcal HP (35 g protein) breakfast meals, or continued breakfast skipping (BS) for 6 consecutive days/pattern. Culture eats evidence for breakfast: how culture influences implementation of evidence-based practices.

BACKGROUND: Research has produced a substantial and expanding body of evidence-based practices (EBPs), encompassing interventions, programmes, clinical guidelines, protocols, care pathways and models of care supported by the best available evidence. Despite this, healthcare delivery is still frequently characterised as insufficiently evidence-based, reflecting a persistent gap between what is known to be effective and what is routinely implemented in practice. Traditional explanations only partially account for this gap, often overlooking culture as a critical yet under-theorized influence. Cu

Are sleep and breakfast behaviours predictors of active or independent commuting to school in Spanish youth?

BACKGROUND: Despite increasing interest in the association between active commuting to school (ACS) and health-related behaviors, the existing literature presents inconsistent findings regarding the relationships between ACS and preceding behaviors such as sleep duration and daily breakfast consumption. The current study aimed to analyze the associations between the mode of commuting to school and independent mobility to school with sleep duration and daily breakfast consumption among Spanish children and adolescents, and the secondary aim was to conduct this analysis separately by gender. Voluntary fortification of breakfast cereals with folic acid: contribution to dietary intake in Australia.

Ready-to-eat breakfast cereals have been voluntarily fortified with folic acid since 1995, with the purpose of reducing the prevalence of neural tube defects in utero. Using data from the recent Australian Health Survey, this study aimed to estimate folate intake from one serving of breakfast cereals (median amount). Various commercial brands were purchased in 2002 (n = 19) and in 2014 (n = 14); folate was determined by microbiological assay and high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). Total folate (μg/100 g) in 2002 and 2014 selections were 144-633 and 147-564, respectively, and mostly com

Breakfast habits among school children in selected communities in the eastern region of Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Breakfast is considered the most important meal of the day, yet many people skip breakfast. Studies indicate that school age children who regularly skip breakfast are not likely to concentrate in class, thus affecting school performance. This study determined the breakfast habits and nutrient contributions of the breakfast meal to the days' nutrient intake. DESIGN: A cross sectional study was conducted among school children (n=359) between the ages of 6-19 years in Manya Krobo in the Eastern Region of Ghana. Questionnaires were used to collect information on background characteris

Breakfast high in whey protein or carbohydrates improves coping with workload in healthy subjects.

Dietary components may affect brain function and influence behaviour by inducing the synthesis of neurotransmitters. The aim of the present study was to examine the influence of consumption of a whey protein-containing breakfast drink v. a carbohydrate drink v. control on subjective and physiological responses to mental workload in simulated work. In a randomised cross-over design, ten healthy subjects (seven women, median age 26 years, median BMI 23 kg/m(2)) participated in a single-blinded, placebo-controlled study. The subjects performed demanding work-like tasks after having a breakfast dr

Dietary intake of whole and refined grain breakfast cereals and weight gain in men.

OBJECTIVE: Prospective studies have suggested that substituting whole grain for refined grain products may lower the risk of overweight and obesity. Breakfast cereal intake is a major source of whole and refined grains and has also been associated with having a lower BMI. The aim of this study was to prospectively assess the association between whole and refined grain breakfast cereal intakes and risk of overweight (BMI >or= 25 kg/m(2)) and weight gain. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: We examined 17,881 U.S. male physicians 40 to 84 years of age in 1982 who were free of cardiovascular diseas

Effect of breakfast fat content on glucose tolerance and risk factors of atherosclerosis and thrombosis.

Twenty-four middle-aged healthy men were given a low-fat high-carbohydrate (5.5 g fat; L), or a moderately-fatty, (25.7 g fat; M) breakfast of similar energy contents for 28 d. Other meals were under less control. An oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was given at 09.00 hours on day 1 before treatment allocation and at 13.30 hours on day 29. There were no significant treatment differences in fasting serum values, either on day 1 or at the termination of treatments on day 29. The following was observed on day 29: (1) the M breakfast led to higher OGTT C-peptide responses and higher areas under

From Policy to Practice: School Stakeholder Perspectives on Alternative Breakfast Implementation in Utah.

BACKGROUND: The School Breakfast Program (SBP) provides academic and nutritional benefits to U.S. children. In Utah, the Start Smart Utah policy requires schools with higher proportions of students from low-income backgrounds to adopt alternative breakfast models. Research suggests policy adoption does not guarantee effective implementation. This study examined school stakeholders' perspectives on implementing Start Smart Utah. METHODS: This qualitative study recruited Utah school stakeholders (n = 32) whose schools were required to implement an alternative breakfast model under Start Smart U

No Breakfast? physiological effects of morning food deprivation in spotted munia (Lonchura punctulata).

Food is essential for an organism to meet its daily energy requirements. For this reason, animals show a highly motivated behaviour towards the acquisition of food. Food availability, however, is fairly irregular in nature as it is influenced by a number of environmental and ecological factors. Hence, food availability is a key factor in shaping the life history of an organism. In the present study, we tested the effects of timed food restriction on behaviour, physiology and hormone levels in Spotted Munia (Lonchura punctulata) subjected to a food availability for only four hours in the evenin

Breakfast skipping suppresses the vascular endothelial function of the brachial artery after lunch.

Breakfast skipping has been suggested to be associated with cardiovascular diseases. However, whether breakfast skipping affects vascular endothelial function (VEF), a marker of cardiovascular diseases, remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the impact of breakfast consumption (Eating trial) and skipping (Skipping trial) on brachial artery (BA) VEF in healthy breakfast eaters. A total of nine healthy individuals (4 females and 5 males) either had breakfast between 830 and 900 or skipped it and had lunch between 1200 and 1230, followed by a 3-h rest period until 1530. For BA VEF evalu
