Effects of Derotational Breathing Exercises on Thoracic Cage Asymmetry in Adolescents with Thoracic Scoliosis.

Thoracic scoliosis is commonly associated with rib cage deformity and impaired respiratory mechanics. Derotational breathing exercises aim to correct three-dimensional trunk asymmetry by selectively expanding the concave hemithorax. This prospective quasi-experimental study investigated the effects of a 4-week supervised Schroth-based rotational angular breathing (RAB) program on intercostal distance (ICD), vertebral axial rotation, and Cobb angle in 20 female adolescents (age 14.30 ± 1.84 years; mean follow-up 33.45 ± 4.26 days) with thoracic idiopathic scoliosis. Radiographic measurements we

Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction and the Air We Breathe.

An association between airway dysfunction and airborne pollutant inhalation exists. Volatilized airborne fluorocarbons in ski wax rooms, particulate matter, and trichloromines in indoor environments are suspect to high prevalence of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction and new-onset asthma in athletes competing in cross-country skiing, ice rink sports, and swimming. Ozone is implicated in acute decreases in lung function and the development of new-onset asthma from exposure during exercise. Mechanisms and genetic links are proposed for pollution-related new-onset asthma. Oxidative stress from

Breathing during exercise: demands, regulation, limitations.

In humans alveolar ventilation (VA) is adjusted almost perfectly to the metabolic demands of mild and moderate exercise. For example, in exercise transitions and in the steady state, PaCO2 rarely deviates by more than 1 to 3 mmHg from the value at rest. This near-homeostasis contrasts to most other mammalian species; equines for example, demonstrate a progressive hypocapnia and alkalosis as exercise intensity is increased to moderate levels. In equines, the control systems seem programmed for a specific hyperventilation that contributes to maintenance of PaO2 homeostasis. Generally, during hea

Unlocking the power of gamification: Video game-based breathing vs. conventional breathing exercises on pulmonary and extrapulmonary features in children with asthma.

OBJECTIVE: The benefits of incorporating breathing exercises as an adjunct to medical treatment in the management of asthma are well established. Video game-based interventions are notable for the additional advantages they offer to children with chronic respiratory diseases; however, research specifically focusing on children with asthma remains limited. This study aimed to compare the effects of video game-based breathing exercises and conventional breathing exercises on pulmonary and extrapulmonary features in children with asthma. METHODS: Thirty-four children with asthma aged 8-18 years

Breathing during Exercise: Respiratory and Circulatory Interactions.

Under conditions of exercise the heart and lungs are linked in important ways. First, both the heart and lungs are linked in series as pumps for O2 and CO2 transport. Second, they are mechanically linked owing to their location within the thorax. This means that changes in lung volume (and intrathoracic pressure) will influence cardiac filling and ejection. The respiratory muscles cyclically contract during exercise to allow for gas exchange. This ensures that the partial pressures of O2 and CO2 in the blood are largely kept within narrow limits, while the heart and circulatory system ensures

Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing in the Assessment of Dysfunctional Breathing.

Dysfunctional breathing (DB) is a disabling condition which affects the biomechanical breathing pattern and is challenging to diagnose. It affects individuals in many circumstances, including those without underlying disease who may even be athletic in nature. DB can also aggravate the symptoms of those with established heart or lung conditions. However, it is treatable and individuals have much to gain if it is recognized appropriately. Here we consider the role of cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) in the identification and management of DB. Specifically, we have described the diagnosti

Periodic breathing in healthy humans at exercise in hypoxia.

Periodic breathing is frequent in heart failure or ventilatory disorders during sleep, and common during sleep at high altitude, but has been rarely studied in wakefulness and during exercise. A retrospective analysis of ventilation from hypoxia exercise tests was realized in 82 healthy subjects separated into two groups with either high or low ventilatory response to hypoxia at exercise (HVRe). A fast Fourier transform spectral analysis of the breath-by-breath ventilation (V̇e) signal, O2 saturation, and end-tidal PCO2 evidenced a periodic pattern with a period of 11.1 to 12.0 s. The peak pow

Breathing pattern during exercise in myopathic subjects.

Previous studies have described a neurogenic-induced ventilatory tachypneic response during exercise. The present paper compares the breathing pattern of control and myopathic human subjects submitted to exercise. Peripheral neurogenic stimuli (PNS) at the same level of oxygen consumption should be enhanced in myopathic subjects as a consequence of muscular mass loss. Myopathic individuals showed hyperventilation (increased VeO2 and VeCO2) which was mostly due to higher respiratory frequency. The shorter respiratory cycle was due chiefly to Te reduction, since the Ti/TTOT ratio was greater in

Breathing He-O2 increases ventilation but does not decrease the work of breathing during exercise.

We previously observed an increase in minute ventilation (V E) with resistive unloading (He-O2 breathing) in healthy elderly subjects with normal pulmonary function. To investigate the effects of resistive unloading in elderly subjects with mild chronic airflow limitation (FEV(1)/FVC: 61 +/- 4%), we studied 10 elderly men and women 70 +/- 3 yr of age. These subjects performed graded cycle ergometry to exhaustion, once breathing room air and once breathing a He-O2 gas mixture (79% He, 21% O2). V E, pulmonary mechanics, and PET(CO2) were measured during each 1-min increment in work rate. Data we
