The effects of electric stimulation on isometric force generation of isolated helical strips of bovine facial arteries (BFA) and veins (BFV) were investigated. Whereas BFA always contracted, electrically stimulated BFV showed a biphasic response, i.e. a small, transient contraction followed by an intense relaxation. Intracerebroventricular injections of selective opioid agonists were used to investigate the role of opiate receptor subtypes in cardiovascular function in awake rats. The mu-agonist (D-Ala2,MePhe4,Gly5-ol)enkephalin (1 nmol) caused a prolonged increase in blood pressure and an initial decrease followed by a delayed increase in heart rate. Digitalis glycosides continue to place high on the list of prescribed drugs. Digoxin is 8th on prescriptions written in the United States in 1980, digitoxin 16th, and digitalis leaf 23rd. There is little doubt that most physicians continue to believe these drugs are useful.
