[A case of recurrent cough in bronchial carcinoid].

The carcinoid tumors of the bronchial are extremely uncommon, with an incidence of 5% of all pulmonary neoplasms. The carcinoid is the more frequent tumor of the lung in paediatric age. The symptoms most often reported were cough, recurring infection, chest pain, hemoptysis, fever, dyspnea, mild dyspnea attacks after physical effort or nervousness. The carcinoid syndrome is uncommon. Neuroendocrine tumors of the lung embrace a spectrum from low-grade typical carcinoid, intermediate-grade atypical carcinoid, and high-grade categories of large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma and small cell carcino

Beyond bronchitis: a review of the congenital and acquired abnormalities of the bronchus.

Anomalies of the bronchus can be both congenital and acquired. Several different congenital aberrations of the bronchial anatomy are commonly encountered including tracheal bronchus, accessory cardiac bronchus, and bronchial agenesis/aplasia/hypoplasia. In addition, Williams-Campbell syndrome and cystic fibrosis are two other congenital conditions that result in bronchial pathology. Acquired pathology affecting the bronchi can typically be divided into three broad categories of bronchial disease: bronchial wall thickening, dilatation/bronchiectasis, and obstruction/stenosis. Bronchial wall thi

[Bronchial carcinoid tumors: a prospective study].

We report the results of a study performed in the thoracic surgery department of Hospital General Universitario of Valencia from October 1989 to December 1996. Of the 621 patients diagnosed of lung cancer during this period, 320 underwent the usual surgical excision, 18 were confirmed histologically as bronchial carcinoid tumors, indicating an incidence of 5.6% of all pulmonary neoplasms resected in our department. The symptoms most often reported were recurring infection (44.5%) and chest pain (33.3%). Only one patient presented carcinoid syndrome. The most common radiologic presentation was

Bronchial brushing through the flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope in the diagnosis of peripheral pulmonary lesions.

Bronchial brushing was performed concomitantly with transnasal flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy in 44 patients with localized peripheral pulmonary lesions and absence of visible bronchial abnormality down to subsegmental level. Fluoroscopic confirmation of brush placement was obtained. A diagnosis of malignancy was made by bronchial brushing in 12 of 23 patients (52 percent) proved to have neoplasm, although diagnostic accuracy rose to six of seven patients (86 percent) in the final quarter of the study. There was no relationship between diagnostic accuracy and tumor location. Diagnostic accur

PD-1/PD-L1 negative schwannoma mimicking obstructive bronchial malignancy: A case report.

Schwannomas are homogeneous tumors of schwann cells and occur at peripheral and cranial nerves on the upper limbs, the head and neck area. Rarely, a bronchial schwannoma may appear in the lung and be misdiagnosed as lung neoplasms. Here, we report a 56-year old woman with a 5.8 × 7.0 × 2.8 cm lesion in her right upper lobe bronchus. The lesion had a maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax ) of 8.5 by 18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET). Bronchoscopy showed a mass obstructing the bronchus that bled easily. Despite repeated biopsies, a lung malignancy could not be excl

[Lymphocytes in sputum].

The authors analysed 116 hospitalized patients who, in their routine cytologic examination of the sputum, had also a cytomorphologic finding of lymphocytes. The greatest majority of these patients, 63 of them or 54.3% suffered from malignant neoplasm. Out of these 63 patients, 53 of them or 45.7% suffered from primary bronchial carcinoma, whereas 10 patients or 8.6% had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, metastatic lung cancer of extrathoracic primary localization, Hodgkin's lymphoma, while two patients were supposed to have lung neoplasm. Our study also revealed that 14 patients (out of 116 hospitalized

Bronchial Fibroepithelial Polyp With Severe Hemoptysis as First Manifestation: A Case Report.

Fibroepithelial polyps are uncommon benign tumors that mostly occur in skin, oral cavity and genitourinary tract. These lesions have common morphological features with other mesenchymal tumors such as angiomyofibroblastoma, aggressive angiomyxoma, and cellular angiofibroma and present with numerous histological appearances. Benign endobronchial tumors are rare. These neoplasms have a slow growth and usually are related to bronchial obstruction. Only a few cases of bronchial fibroepithelial polyps have been reported. Bronchial fibroepithelial polyps might present with airway stenosis resulting

Bronchial adenoma presenting with chronic asthma and obstructive pneumonia: a case report.

A rare case of primary pulmonary neoplasm is reported. The patient was a 38-year-old woman presenting with obstructive pneumonia. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy revealed an endobronchial mass obstructing the left main bronchus: a reddish polypoid mass which bled on contract that was suggestive of bronchial adenoma. The patient also had a long-standing history of bronchial asthma and hemoptysis and the delay in establishing the eventured diagnosis was caused by the minor symptoms mimicking those of asthma. A persistent restrictive lung and the presentation of obstructive pneumonia were important clues

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the lung. A case report and review of the literature.

Primary lung tumors mimicking the salivary gland-type neoplasms are extremely rare. These types of tumors originate from submucosal bronchial glands. Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma is an uncommon tumor in this group, and only 7 cases have been reported. It is considered to be a low-grade malignant neoplasm. We report a case of epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of bronchial gland origin in a 73-year-old man who presented with coughing and dyspnea. The bronchus of the left lower lobe contained a tumor mass that had a polypoid growth pattern. The tumor also extended into the pulmonary parenc

Bronchial salivary gland-type mucinous adenocarcinoma harboring a GNAS mutation: a novel lung cancer entity? A case report.

We report a case of a 65-year-old man with a 1.0-cm mass in the left main bronchus, exhibiting overlapping morphological, immunohistochemical, and genetic features with both pancreatic intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) with associated invasive carcinoma and salivary gland IPMN. Based on its close proximity to the bronchial submucosal glands and the expression of NKX3.1 (an established immunohistochemical marker for mucinous acinar cells of the minor salivary glands), we propose that the tumor originates from the mucinous acinar cells of the bronchial salivary gland. Therefore, we

Microfilaria in bronchial aspirate.

A 65-year-old female was evaluated for suspected bronchogenic carcinoma. The chest x-ray revealed a left parahilar opacity with a raised left dome of diaphragm. Fiberbronchoscopy showed an oedematous and hyperemic left main bronchus but no growth was visualised. Bronchial biopsy did not show any evidence of neoplasm. However, the bronchial aspirate smear examination showed one microfilaria. Post bronchoscopic roentgenogram done on the next day revealed clearing of left parahilar shadow and a normal diaphragm. The patient responded well to 300 mg of diethylcarbamazine given in divided doses for

[Ovarian metastasis from bronchial carcinoma].

INTRODUCTION: The ovary, being a richly vascular organ, may receive metastases from numerous tissues, particularly of gynecologic origin. Extragenital cancers are dominated by gastro-intestinal and breast tumors. The lung is exceptionally described as a primary site of ovarian metastasis. CASE REPORT: We report a 28-year-old woman who was found to have a right perihilar opacity. The diagnosis of small cell bronchial carcinoma was made by bronchial biopsy. A right-sided uterine mass was also identified. This was resected and histopathology identified it as an ovarian metastasis from the pulmon

Immunohistochemical evaluation of a complex endocrinopathy.

A patient with clinical and biochemical evidence of ectopic ACTH production is described. Autopsy revealed endocrine tumors of bronchus and pancreas with metastases to the liver, kidney, abdominal lymph nodes, and bone. Immunohistochemical methods established that the bronchial and pancreatic tumors were separate primary neoplasms each with its own hormone production; and allowed us to determine that the bronchial carcinoid was the source of ACTH and gave rise to the liver metastases, and that insulin was present in the cells of the pancreatic islet cell tumor. These methods also revealed a mi

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the lung: immunohistochemical and ultrastructural observations and review of the literature.

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma is a rare low-grade malignant salivary gland neoplasm that most commonly occurs in the parotid gland but can also arise in minor salivary glands. We report a case of a primary epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the lung. The patient is a 55-year-old black woman who presented with increasing shortness of breath and productive cough of at least 3 months duration. A left lower lobe endobronchial lesion was identified radiographically. Surgical resection of the lesion was performed, obtaining a circumscribed, nonencapsulated 3.9 cm tan mass which was attached

Cytologic imprints of giant atypical bronchopulmonary carcinoid tumor of the lung with extensive oncocytic component.

Bronchopulmonary carcinoid tumors are found in less than 2 of 100,000 people yearly and comprise approximately 1-2% of all lung neoplasms. They are usually diagnosed in the fifth decade of life and occur more frequently in women. Most are central and endobronchial in location. The symptoms presented are those associated with bronchial obstruction, such as coughing, wheezing, and dyspnea. Over one-third of patients are asymptomatic and have an incidentally detected peripheral pulmonary nodule. Diagnosis is usually made by bronchoscopy with bronchial brushings or biopsy. We present the cytologic

Epithelial-myoepithelial tumour of the lung: a case report referring to its molecular histogenesis.

Tracheobronchial submucous glands can be considered the pulmonary equivalent of minor salivary glands and therefore they can develop most of the tumours originated in these. Nevertheless, in spite of the wide distribution of this kind of glands along the tracheobronchial tree, pulmonary salivary gland-like neoplasms are not very frequent. Among them, the most frequent are mucoepidermoid and adenoid cystic carcinomas. On the contrary, pulmonary neoplasms showing a mixture of epithelial and myoepithelial elements are extraordinary infrequent, with only 11 cases collected from literature. We prese

Mucoepidermoid thymic carcinoma: a challenging mediastinal aspirate.

Primary thymic carcinoma-mucoepidermoid cell (MEC) type is rare and only one report describing the cytologic features of this neoplasm in the metastatic site is described. We describe the cytological features of poorly differentiated carcinoma possibly MEC in a 54-year-old man who presented with cough, weight loss, and puffiness of face for 3 months. The significance of this infrequently encountered neoplasm lies in its potential confusion of origin of the tumor-thymus or metastases from a primary bronchial MEC. Immunocytochemical profile was suggestive of a thymic carcinoma of the MEC type.
