While the health burden of bronchiectasis is increasing worldwide, medical and physiotherapy treatment strategies have progressed significantly over the past decade. For this reason, clinicians require readily accessible current evidence based information on the management of this condition. E-learning is a suitable educational forum for the development and maintenance of professional skills, however a comprehensive, evidence based, multidisciplinary website for bronchiectasis was not available. The Bronchiectasis Toolbox at www.bronchiectasis.com.au was developed by a team of clinicians in Au

Bronchiectasis is a chronic respiratory condition characterised by irreversible dilation of the bronchi, leading to recurrent respiratory infections and chronic inflammation. Bacterial infections have been well-recognised as contributors to disease progression as well as potent inducers of exacerbations for decades. However, recent studies have indicated that viruses are present in up to 50% of exacerbations, raising questions over the role viruses may play in bronchiectasis. Despite the evidence of their presence, the role of viral infections in bronchiectasis remains largely underexplored. U

Bronchiectasis presents a significant challenge due to its rising prevalence, associated economic burden and clinical heterogeneity. This review synthesises contemporary understanding and literature of bronchiectasis exacerbations, addressing the transition from stable state to exacerbations, underlining the importance of early and precise recognition, rigorous severity assessment, prompt treatment, and prevention measures, as well as emphasising the need for strategies to assess and improve early and long-term patient outcomes. The review highlights the interplay between stable state phases a

Bronchiectasis is a chronic respiratory disease characterised by permanent enlargement of the airways associated with cough, sputum production and a history of pulmonary exacerbations. In the past few years, incidence and prevalence of bronchiectasis have increased worldwide, possibly due to advances in imaging techniques and disease awareness, leading to increased socioeconomic burden and healthcare costs. Consistently, a mortality increase in bronchiectasis patient cohorts has been demonstrated in certain areas of the globe, with mortality rates of 16-24.8% over 4-5 years of follow-up. Howev

Bronchiectasis is a condition defined by permanently dilated airways and characterized by chronic cough and sputum and in many patients, recurrent exacerbations. Bronchiectasis is a heterogeneous condition, with numerous underlying risk factors and initiating conditions. These factors share in common the ability to impair the mechanisms by which the airways are protected from inflammatory or infectious insults. These underlying factors result in chronic bacterial infection of the airways, inciting a host inflammatory response in which the airways are the collateral damage. The damaged airways

Bronchiectasis is a radiological diagnosis made using computed tomographic (CT) imaging. Although visual CT assessment is necessary for the diagnosis of bronchiectasis, visual assessment of disease severity and progression is challenging. Computer tools offer the potential to improve the characterization of lung damage in patients with bronchiectasis. Newer imaging techniques such as MRI with hyperpolarized gas inhalation have the potential to identify early forms of disease and are without the constraints of requiring ionizing radiation exposure.

Bronchiectasis is a complex, heterogeneous disorder defined by both a radiological abnormality of permanent bronchial dilatation and a clinical syndrome. There are multiple underlying causes including severe infections, mycobacterial disease, autoimmune conditions, hypersensitivity disorders, and genetic conditions. The pathophysiology of disease is understood in terms of interdependent concepts of chronic infection, inflammation, impaired mucociliary clearance, and structural lung damage. Neutrophilic inflammation is characteristic of the disease, with elevated levels of harmful proteases suc

Bronchiectasis is a disease that is characterized by permanent bronchial dilation. This can be localized or diffuse in the lungs. The disease can occur at any age and causes cough, sputum production and repeated infections. It is more common in women and incidence increases with age. Bronchiectasis is characterized by repeated episodes of worsening symptoms that are usually caused by respiratory infections. The cause of bronchiectasis can be unknown but it can be caused by respiratory diseases and diseases outside the chest. Examples of such diseases are asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary d

Bronchiectasis is a chronic inflammatory condition with a diverse aetiology including recurrent infections, genetic abnormalities, immunodeficiency and autoimmune disorders. The prevalence has increased over the past few years and this may be due to better imaging and diagnostic techniques. Management remains the emphasis for improving symptoms and reducing exacerbations. This article focuses on highlighting the latest data released since 2014 on new diagnostic techniques as well as potential future pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment options for patients with bronchiectasis.

Bronchiectasis is increasing in prevalence worldwide, yet current treatments available are limited to those alleviating symptoms and reducing exacerbations. The pathogenesis of the disease and the inflammatory, infective and molecular drivers of disease progression are not fully understood, making the development of novel treatments challenging. Understanding the role bacteria play in disease progression has been enhanced by the use of next-generation sequencing techniques such as 16S rRNA sequencing. The microbiome has not been extensively studied in bronchiectasis, but existing data show lun

Bronchiectasis is a chronic condition with a prevalence continuously on the rise. Bronchiectasis have a considerable impact on morbidity, healthcare utilization and quality of life. Pulmonary function tests, microbiological variables and exacerbation rate are useful in the initial and follow-up evaluation. Scores that combine those variables with chest CT findings have been established to predict hospitalizations and mortality. Assessment of health-related quality of life cannot rely on physiological variables measurement. Dedicated questionnaires are therefore needed for that purpose.

Bronchiectasis is a common but long-neglected disease in China, causing a substantial disease burden both to patients and to society. The overall prevalence of physician-diagnosed bronchiectasis in people aged 40 years or older is estimated at 1.2% and is trending upward with aging of the population. The etiology of bronchiectasis has not been identified heretofore in more than 70% of patients in China, although pneumonia and tuberculosis still appear to be the most common causes of acquired bronchiectasis. Etiologies, comorbidities, and infecting organisms vary greatly across previously publi

The prevalence of bronchiectasis not due to cystic fibrosis (NCFB) increases with older age. Because of multifaceted etiology of bronchiectasis an extensive diagnostic approach is essential. This includes in-depth anamnesis and a high resolution CT scan of the chest (HRCT). The pathophysiological mechanism with infection, inflammation, secretion retention and destruction determine the therapeutic options. In patients with high rates of exacerbations and severe diseases physicians should think of inhaled antibiotics and macrolids. In case of localized bronchiectasis and failure of conventional

The pathogenesis of bronchiectasis cannot be explained by a single cause. The current model is a vicious cycle of inflammation and altered response to infection. This cycle depends not only on the type and virulence of the pathogen but also on the host immune response. In this response, too much or too little can damage the airways or fail to clear the pathogen, thus increasing the probability of further infection. This review describes the changes and advancement in the pathogenesis of bronchiectasis, including mechanisms of injury and host factors.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue is a complex, disabling symptom in non-CF bronchiectasis (nCF-Br). Fatigue can be formally measured using the validated fatigue impact scale (FIS). The relationship between fatigue and clinically important factors such as airflow obstruction, breathlessness or Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in nCF-Br is unclear.
AIM: To measure the correlation between FIS scores and markers of disease severity in nCF-Br.
DESIGN: A prospective cohort study.
METHODS: Patients attending a specialist service were studied. Lung function (FEV(1)% predicted), Medical Research Council dyspnoea

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Bronchiectasis is defined as an abnormal and irreversible dilatation of the bronchi, often associated with chronic productive cough, airway obstruction, and recurrent infections.
METHODS: MEDLINE data from 1978 to November 2008 was analysed. Search was limited to randomized control trials, clinical trials, meta-analysis, reviews published in English, using the keyword bronchiectasis.
RESULTS: The prevalence of bronchiectasis is unknown. However, prevalence seems to increase with age from 4.2 per 100 000 persons aged 18-34 years to 271.8 per 100 000 among those aged 75 ye
