Patterns of suicide in Brunei Darussalam and comparison with neighbouring countries in South East Asia.

A retrospective study of suicides in Brunei Darussalam (Brunei) over a 20 year period from 1991-2010 was conducted by analysing the post-mortem examination and external examination reports and other relevant records. The suicide rate in Brunei is very low (1.9 deaths per 100,000 per year). The majority of the victims were expatriates 82(66%) and hanging was the commonest mode of suicide both in expatriate and local population. The study showed that the suicide rate among the Bruneian Malays was the lowest (0.5 deaths per 100,000 per year) among the different nationalities. The study highlights

A cost- effectiveness and resource requirement comparison to optimize renal dialysis policies in Brunei Darussalam.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease is a growing global health concern, requiring kidney replacement therapy for survival. In Brunei, kidney failure incidence and prevalence are among the highest globally. Despite a peritoneal dialysis preference policy, uptake remains low, straining financial and human resources. With dialysis costs and demand for skilled healthcare workers projected to rise significantly, this study evaluates the cost effectiveness, budget impact, and human resource requirements of alternative dialysis policies to inform sustainable policy decisions. METHODS: A Markov model

Practice and perceptions of postpartum care in Brunei Darussalam indigenous communities: a cross-sectional study.

Southeast Asia has a rich heritage of postpartum customs, many of which are gradually being forgotten and replaced by modern allopathic practices. This is particularly true in Brunei Darussalam where documentation of postpartum customs is lacking. This study explores the postpartum traditions and practices of three indigenous groups in Brunei-Kedayans, Brunei Malays, and Lun Bawangs. A qualitative study was conducted in the form of interviews at market areas and homes of the respondents, primarily targeting the Kedayan, Brunei Malay and Lun Bawang indigenous groups. Data were collected from 57

Emergence and nosocomial spread of carbapenem-resistant OXA-232-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae in Brunei Darussalam.

OBJECTIVES: Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) are identified as a major global health concern. The success of CRE is facilitated by the emergence, acquisition and spread of successful clones carrying plasmid-encoded resistance genes. In this study, an outbreak of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) infections in patients hospitalised in Brunei Darussalam was investigated. METHODS: Over a 3-month period (May-July 2015), five multidrug-resistant K. pneumoniae were recovered from individual patients admitted to intensive care units at two hospitals (RIPAS and PMMPMHAB)

6-alkylsalicylic acids and 6-alkylresorcylic acids from ants in the genus Crematogaster from Brunei.

The defensive chemistry of two species of ants from Brunei in the genus Crematogaster (Physocrema group) has been investigated. Ants in this group release a white secretion from hypertrophied metapleural glands on their thorax when they are disturbed. Previously, one species in this group has been shown to produce alkylphenols and alkylresorcinols. In the present investigation, similar compounds along with salicylic acids and resorcylic acids that are anacardic acid and olivetolic acid homologs, respectively, are described from two species. The structures of these compounds were suggested by t

Serotyping of Brunei pneumococcal clinical strains and the investigation of their capability to adhere and invade a brain endothelium model.

INTRODUCTION: Pneumococcal infections have caused morbidity and mortality globally. Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococci) are commensal bacteria that colonize the nasopharynx, asymptomatically. From there, pneumococci can spread in the lungs causing pneumonia and disseminate in the bloodstream causing bacteremia (sepsis) and reach the brain leading to meningitis. Endothelial cells are one of the most important components of the blood-brain barrier that separates the blood from the brain and plays the first protective role against pneumococcal entry. Thus this study aimed to investigate on the

Prevalence and spectrum of germline BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations in multiethnic cohort of breast cancer patients in Brunei Darussalam.

This is the first genetic study of its kind in Brunei Darussalam. BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are the most well-known and well described predictors of hereditary breast cancer due to their clinical importance. This study aimed to identify the prevalence and mutation spectrum of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 germline mutations among 120 unselected series of Brunei breast cancer patients. We screened the entire coding region of BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene using Sanger sequencing and next-generation sequencing methods and identified three pathogenic and one likely pathogenic mutations in the BRCA2 gene. Of the 120 pati

Gold Standards Framework to identify palliative care needs in primary care: a qualitative study of implementation in Brunei Darussalam.

BACKGROUND: The early identification of patients who may benefit from a palliative approach remains challenging in primary care. The Gold Standards Framework (GSF) provides a structured approach to identify patients who may be approaching the end of life; however, its implementation in primary care settings outside the United Kingdom remains poorly understood. To explore general practitioners' experiences of using the GSF prognostic indicator guidance to identify patients with palliative care needs in primary care in Brunei. METHODS: This qualitative study was part of a broader mixed-methods

Case reports of patients with coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) who have been discharged and subsequently report positive reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction again (hereafter referred as "re-positive") do not fully describe the magnitude and significance of this issue. To determine the re-positive rate (proportion) and review probable causes and outcomes, we conduct a retrospective study of all 119 discharged patients in Brunei Darussalam up till April 23. Patients who were discharged are required to self-isolate at home for 14 days and undergo nasopharyngeal specimen collection
