OBJECTIVES: The intersection of medicine and Buddhist spiritual care in institutional end-of-life settings remains underexplored, particularly regarding post-death rituals. This qualitative study examines how Buddhist assisted chanting (zhunian, ) - a 24-hour continuous recitation of Amitabha Buddha's name - functions as a model of holistic end-of-life care that addresses the spiritual, emotional, psychological, and relational dimensions of dying.
METHODS: Semi-structured, in-person interviews were conducted with 34 participants (18 volunteers, 8 patients, and 8 family caregivers) at the Lotu

This study reports on a cooperative project to develop a comic book aimed at enhancing knowledge and understanding of cultural differences between Buddhist and Muslim students in Thailand's three southern border provinces. These provinces, marked by cultural diversity and periodic tensions, have long been challenged by efforts to deepen religious divisions. Within this context, the project sought to foster intercultural awareness through collaborative storytelling. An action research methodology was employed in four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data collection combine

CONTEXT: The relationship between advance care planning (ACP) and religious beliefs is controversial in Western countries; a previous study in Japan has shown an association without, however, elucidating its mechanism.
OBJECTIVES: To quantitatively investigate the association between ACP discussions and intrinsic religious motivations and to qualitatively analyze how motives influence discussions in Japan.
METHODS: An explanatory sequential mixed-methods study 2023-2025 in Japan. Responses were analyzed from 124 religious adults aged 51-84 years participating in Christian and Buddhist religi

Recent research has highlighted the importance of traditional methods of healing in relation to the treatment of psychological distress in non-Western populations. This pilot study, conducted in Massachusetts, investigates what Buddhist Cambodian monks consider to be the causes, phenomenology and appropriate intervention strategies for anger among Cambodian refugees. Six monks were interviewed at four major temples in Massachusetts. Findings suggested that anger was common in the Cambodian community, was frequently triggered by marital discord, and commonly resulted in verbal and physical viol

The objective of the study is to assess views of age related changes in sexual behavior among married Thai adults age 53 to 57. Results are viewed in the context of life course theory. In-depth interviews were conducted with 44 Thai adults in Bangkok and the four regions of Thailand. Topics covered include changing sexual behavior with age, adjustment to this change, gender differences in behavior, attitudes toward commercial sex and other non-marital sexual partners, and condom use. Most respondents were aware of this change and saw a decrease in sexual activity and desire more often among wo

Although enacted and internalized stigma is a continuing problem for people living with HIV (PLWH) in Southeast Asia, there is little understanding of how PLWH cope with discrimination, exclusion, and other negative outcomes caused by HIV-related stigmatization. This article aims to bridge this gap by analyzing the lived experiences of HIV-related stigmatization and coping strategies among 30 people with HIV in Myanmar, a country heavily influenced by religion, especially Buddhism. Among the 30 study participants, 20 were female and 10 were male, with ages ranging from 18 to 50 years. Through

Psoriasis patients can experience a range of psychosocial difficulties, which can lead to issues with wellbeing, anxiety and depression. Mindfulness-based interventions have positive impacts on these outcomes; however, there is a need to identify the mechanisms of action of such interventions. This study attempts to do so by examining individual differences in psoriasis patients' wellbeing, anxiety and depression using a clinically modified Buddhist psychological model (CBPM). Psoriasis patients (N = 285) and (N = 209) completed measures of each CBPM component at time 1 and 2. SEM analyses fou

The healing process of the Best Self Visualization Method (BSM) is described within the framework of meditation, neuroscience, and psychodynamic theory. Cases are drawn from the treatment of high-risk youth, who have histories of poverty, survival of sexual and physical abuse, and/or current risk for perpetrating abuse. Clinical use of BSM is demonstrated in two case illustrations, one of group psychotherapy and another of individual therapy.

This paper presents "Neither/Nor," a philosophical synthesis which defines conceptual and experiential modes of knowing as complementary skills which can be deliberately trained and oscillated. The paper argues that neither theory (concepts) nor practice (experience) alone can suffice for desirable outcomes in personal flourishing or scientific inquiry. Drawing from Western and Eastern philosophical traditions-from ancient skepticism and Buddhism to modern pragmatism and cognitive science-Neither/Nor proposes that "latent Platonism," the unconscious preference for abstract concepts over direct

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Pain resilience (PR) may be associated with different coping skills, resulting in differences in pain outcomes. This study aimed to understand the role of PR in dictating the choice of coping methods.
METHODS: This study completed a preliminary validation of the Mandarin Chinese version of the Pain Resilience Scale (PRS-C) with online survey data (n = 46). Further, we conducted interviews with individuals with chronic low back pain (n = 24).
RESULTS: The PRS-C psychometric properties were assessed using a confirmatory factor analysis. The interviews explored pain histo

OBJECTIVE: Immobilization, or death feigning, is a survival strategy induced when the fight-or-flight response fails. Internally and externally, the near-death condition of immobilization can cause pathological problems, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), making it a therapeutic target. However, we have observed clients with PTSD who use immobilization to actively fight traumatic stresses. The key to their recovery was not releasing them from immobilization-related problems but rather admiring their fighting strategy. The therapeutic basis of this "fighting immobilization" (FGI) d

The emergence of large-scale cooperation during the Holocene remains a central problem in the evolutionary literature. One hypothesis points to culturally evolved beliefs in punishing, interventionist gods that facilitate the extension of cooperative behaviour toward geographically distant co-religionists. Furthermore, another hypothesis points to such mechanisms being constrained to the religious ingroup, possibly at the expense of religious outgroups. To test these hypotheses, we administered two behavioural experiments and a set of interviews to a sample of 2228 participants from 15 diverse

This study examined bone density among postmenopausal Buddhist nuns and female religious followers of Buddhism in southern Taiwan and related the measurements to subjects characteristics including age, body mass, physical activity, nutrient intake, and vegetarian practice. A total of 258 postmenopausal Taiwanese vegetarian women participated in the study. Lumbar spine and femoral neck bone mineral density (BMD) were measured using dual-photon absorptimetry. BMD measurements were analyzed first as quantitative outcomes in multiple regression analyses and next as indicators of osteopenia status

Absence of consciousness can occur due to a concussion, anesthetization, intoxication, epileptic seizure, or other fainting/syncope episode caused by lack of blood flow to the brain. However, some meditation practitioners also report that it is possible to undergo a total absence of consciousness during meditation, lasting up to 7 days, and that these "cessations" can be consistently induced. One form of extended cessation (i.e., nirodha samāpatti) is thought to be different from sleep because practitioners are said to be completely impervious to external stimulation. That is, they cannot be '

Body donation is important for medical education and academic research. However, it is relatively rare in Hong Kong when compared with many Western countries. Comprehensive research has been performed on the motivation for body donation in Western countries; however, there is still insufficient research on body donation in Hong Kong to provide information on how to increase the body-donation rate. To understand the factors involved in the decision to donate one's body, the authors interviewed a registered donor and the daughter of another donor in Hong Kong. The authors interpreted the informa

Older adults frequently face a myriad of physical and mental health challenges, which can contribute to feelings of stress and subsequent depression. Nevertheless, with age often comes a wealth of life experience and resilience. Perceived stress commonly predicts depression across all age groups, while meditation has been associated with lower levels of depression. Additionally, adherence to the Five Precepts is a prevalent practice among Thai individuals, particularly among older adults. However, it remains unclear how the combination of meditation and the Buddhist Five Precepts influences de
