An antibody to the 96 kD alpha-subunit of the Na+, K+-ATPase from Bufo marinus has been used in immunostaining rat kidney and salivary glands. Intense staining was observed on basolateral membranes of distal tubules of the kidney and striated ducts of the three major salivary glands. Soil, water, and amphibian tissues collected between 1995 and 1999 from 15 study sites in Bermuda were analysed for pesticides and heavy metals. The most abundant pesticide residue in soil was p,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) which was found at all sites in concentrations ranging from 0.003 to 4.023 p.p.m. No pesticide residues were found in water. Four pathogenic strains of leptospires were isolated from the kidneys of toads (Bufo marinus) and seven from frogs (Eleutherodactylus johnstonei). Isolates from two toads and one frog belonged to serovar bim, the causative agent of most cases of severe leptospirosis on Barbados. The other eight strains belonged to a new serovar within the Australis serogroup. The name bajan is proposed for this new serovar of Leptospira interrogans.

During a 20 yr period (1978 to 1998), 233 isolates of Salmonella spp. were cultured from 179 wildlife animals (representing 25 species), 32 crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) eggs and six crocodile nesting sites, and represented 59 different serotypes. Salmonella serotype Virchow, the major serotype infecting humans in north Queensland, (Australia) was common in macropodids, but was not found in reptiles and was isolated only once from cane toads (Bufo marinus). Investigations of human cases of salmonellosis should include simultaneous studies on wild and domestic animals in contact with the case.

A new nematode species, Foleyellides rhinellae sp. nov. (Onchocercidae), is described from specimens found in the body cavity of the cane toad, Rhinella marina (Linnaeus) (Anura, Bufonidae), in the Laguna de Coyuca, Guerrero, in the Pacific slope of Mexico. The new species differs from the other nine species of Foleyellides by infecting bufonid anurans and by the number and arrangement of caudal papillae.
