Myiasis by the Toad Fly (Lucilia bufonivora; Calliphoidae) in Amphibians in Montana, USA.

Toad flies in the genus Lucilia (previously referred to as Bufolucilia spp.) parasitize and cause myiasis in several amphibian species in North America. From 2019 to 2022, we documented Lucilia bufonivora infections in post-metamorphic western toads (Anaxyrus boreas) during amphibian surveys in four wetlands in Glacier National Park, Montana, US. We found nine infected adult toads in 2019, seven infected adults in 2020, one infected juvenile in 2021, and five infected adults plus one infected juvenile in 2022. We also captured Columbia spotted frogs (Rana luteiventris) during these same survey

The benefits of coinfection: trematodes alter disease outcomes associated with virus infection.

Coinfections are increasingly recognized as important drivers of disease dynamics. Consequently, greater emphasis has been placed on integrating principles from community ecology with disease ecology to understand within-host interactions among parasites. Using larval amphibians and two amphibian parasites (ranaviruses and the trematode Echinoparyphium sp.), we examined the influence of coinfection on disease outcomes. Our first objective was to examine how priority effects (the timing and sequence of parasite exposure) influence infection and disease outcomes in the laboratory. We found that

The complex evolutionary history of the tympanic middle ear in frogs and toads (Anura).

Most anurans possess a tympanic middle ear (TME) that transmits sound waves to the inner ear; however, numerous species lack some or all TME components. To understand the evolution of these structures, we undertook a comprehensive assessment of their occurrence across anurans and performed ancestral character state reconstructions. Our analysis indicates that the TME was completely lost at least 38 independent times in Anura. The inferred evolutionary history of the TME is exceptionally complex in true toads (Bufonidae), where it was lost in the most recent common ancestor, preceding a radiati

Molecular and morphological characterisation of Rhabdias picardiae Junker, Lhermitte-Vallarino et Bain, 2010 (Nematoda: Rhabdiasidae) from Delaland's River Frog, Amietia delalandii (Duméril et Bibron, 1841) (Amphibia: Pyxicephalidae) in South Africa.

Rhabdias picardiae previously known from the Guttural Toad, Sclerophrys gutturalis (Bufonidae) is described from a new host, Delaland's River Frog, Amietia delalandii (Pyxicephalidae). The species identification is confirmed by analysis of the COI gene sequence and morphological comparison with the original description. Morphological details of apical structures in adult parasitic R. picardiae, namely, the shape and position of lips, the number and position of external labial papillae, and the buccal capsule morphology are described using light and scanning electron microscopy. The buccal caps

Preliminary ionome of the parotoid gland secretion from Rhinella jimi toad.

The cururu toad (Rhinella jimi) is an anuran belonging to the fauna of the Brazilian northeast region, which releases a secretion with toxins from your parotoid glands. Although it has some information about secondary metabolites and proteins, the elemental composition of the released secretion is unknown. Therefore, this is the first report on the ionome of the secretion of the parotoid glands from R. jimi, investigating the influences of abiotic factors such as biome, seasonality, and gender. ICP-MS was used for measurements combined with principal component analysis (PCA). A screening of th

Effects of minimum Strigea robusta (Digenea: Strigeidae) cercariae doses and localization of cysts on the anomaly P manifestation in Pelophylax lessonae (Anura: Ranidae) tadpoles.

The anomaly P is a mass morphological anomaly found in some populations of anuran amphibians (water frogs of the genus Pelophylax and toads of the genera Bufo and Bufotes) caused by the parasitic flatworm Strigea robusta. Minimum dose of cercariae for the appearance of the anomaly P remains unknown. However, it is important information for understanding of host population dynamics after invasion and the effects of the parasite on the second intermediate hosts. Herein, the invasion properties of S. robusta in Pelophylax lessonae tadpoles (Anura: Ranidae) and minimum dose for appearance of mild

Effects of Separate and Combined Exposure of Cadmium and Lead on the Endochondral Ossification in Bufo gargarizans.

Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) are ubiquitous in aquatic environments and most studies have examined the potential effects of Cd or Pb alone on aquatic organisms. In the present study, chronic effects of Cd and Pb, alone and in combination, on Bufo gargarizans were investigated by exposing embryos to these contaminants throughout metamorphosis. Significant reductions in body mass and snout-to-vent length were observed in B. gargarizans at Gosner stage 42 (Gs 42) and Gs 46 exposed to a Cd/Pb mixture. Single and combined exposure with Cd and Pb induced histological alterations of the thyroid gland c

Inhibition of Metamorphosis, Thyroid Gland, and Skeletal Ossification Induced by Hexavalent Chromium in Bufo gargarizans Larvae.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr [VI]) is one of the major detrimental heavy metal pollutants. In the present study, Bufo gargarizans were exposed to 0, 52, 104, 208, and 416 μg/L Cr (VI) from Gosner stage 2 until metamorphosis; and growth, development, and histological characteristics of the thyroid gland and skeletal ossification were examined. The results demonstrated that the survival rate of larvae exposed to Cr (VI) was not different from that measured in animals from the control group. However, high levels of Cr (VI) (104, 208, and 416 μg/L) were associated with significantly delayed growth and

Whispers from vestigial nubbins: Arrested development provokes trait loss in toads.

Despite the use of acoustic communication, many species of toads (family Bufonidae) have lost parts of the tympanic middle ear, representing at least 12 independent evolutionary occurrences of trait loss. The comparative development of the tympanic middle ear in toads is poorly understood. Here, we compared middle ear development among two pairs of closely related toad species in the genera Atelopus and Rhinella that have (eared) or lack (earless) middle ear structures. We bred toads in Peru and Ecuador, preserved developmental series from tadpoles to juveniles, and examined ontogenetic timing

Intra- and extracellular dehydration has no effect on plasma levels of angiotensin II in an amphibian.

Previous studies have demonstrated that both dehydration (intra and extracellular) and treatment with angiotensin II (A-II) induce changes in thirst-related behavior in the spadefoot toad, Scaphiopus couchii. One of the steps in determining a causal relationship between a hormone and a behavior is to determine that there is association between an animal's performance of the behavior and changes in endogenous hormonal concentrations. The hypothesis tested that plasma levels of the peptide hormone A-II would change as a result of dehydration known to induce water absorption response (WR) behavio

[Parasitism of larvae of the fly, Lucilia bufonivora, Moniez, 1876, on Anura].

In 1951 to 1973 there were recorded cases of myiasis in four species of Amphibia (Pelobates fuscus, Bufo bufo, B. viridis, Rana arvalis) from the Volga-Kama state reserve (the Tatar ASSR). In arid 1972 the number of Rana arvalis with myiasis reached to 20-25%. Observations were conducted on the development of Lucilia bufonivora from the egg laying to the host death and hatching of imago.

Earless toads sense low frequencies but miss the high notes.

Sensory losses or reductions are frequently attributed to relaxed selection. However, anuran species have lost tympanic middle ears many times, despite anurans' use of acoustic communication and the benefit of middle ears for hearing airborne sound. Here we determine whether pre-existing alternative sensory pathways enable anurans lacking tympanic middle ears (termed earless anurans) to hear airborne sound as well as eared species or to better sense vibrations in the environment. We used auditory brainstem recordings to compare hearing and vibrational sensitivity among 10 species (six eared, f

Social isolation, rather than kinship, influences association behavior in toad tadpoles (Bufo formosus).

Experiences of social isolation alter the developing social behavior of animals. Association preference is an important behavioral tendency for amphibian larvae (tadpoles) that exhibit social aggregation as a means of predator avoidance. For tadpoles that exhibit social aggregation, the learning period during exposure to conspecifics could be crucial. This study investigated how water quality and social experience influence association preferences to unfamiliar conspecifics in Bufo formosus (Eastern-Japanese common toad) tadpoles. Using a 2 × 2 factorial design, subject tadpoles were reared ei

Feeding behavior of Mimomyia (Etorleptiomyia) luzonensis (Ludlow, 1905) (Diptera, Culicidae) in Peninsular Malaysia.

Mosquitoes are vectors of various human diseases in the tropics including yellow fever, dengue, malaria and West Nile virus. Mosquitoes can act as vectors between wildlife and humans, which is particularly important for diseases where wild animals serve as reservoirs of parasites in the absence of human infections. Research has mainly focused on the medical impacts of Anopheles, Aedes, Mansonia and Culex, however, very little attention has been directed towards other mosquito genera, especially those which act as vectors of diseases of wildlife. We have observed adults of Mimomyia (Etorleptiom

Neurotropic mesomycetozoean-like infection in larvae of the southern toad Anaxyrus terrestris in Florida, USA.

As part of a state-wide multispecies survey of amphibian diseases, sampling was conducted at Archbold Biological Station, Venus, Florida, USA, on 15 April 2011. Gross examination of southern toad (Anaxyrus terrestris) larvae was unremarkable, but infections by a mesomycetozoean-like organism were observed in longitudinally sectioned routine haematoxylin and eosin-stained histologic slides. In 100% of the sectioned specimens examined (n = 5), a high density of the organism, representing several developmental stages, was found in the central nervous system, mainly in the spinal cord, brain, reti

Observations on myiasis by the calliphorid, Bufolucilia silvarum, in the eastern American toad (Bufo americanus americanus) from southeastern Wisconsin.

Larvae of certain species of blowflies (Calliphoridae) cause myiasis in amphibians which may result in significant mortality, yet there are few reports from North America. In this study, we observed primary myiasis in a population of juvenile eastern American toads (Bufo americanus americanus) collected during May-July 1998 from southeastern Wisconsin (USA). Nine (6%) of 140 toads were infected by the green blow fly (Bufolucilia silvarum) with a mean intensity of 10.5 +/- 7.2 (range = 1-24). Weekly parasite prevalence and mean intensity remained low, ranging from 0-20% and 2 +/- 1.4 to 14 +/-
