[Eales disease: a case report in Burkina Faso].

The authors report the first case of Eales disease described in Burkina Faso. A 21-year-old man presented myodesopsia with acute visual acuity decrease in the right eye at 1/50, vitreous haemorrhage, and retinal phlebitis of the large trunks. In the left eye, visual acuity was 10/10 P2, with phlebitis associated with retinal haemorrhages, vascular occlusion, and retinal ischaemia. Laboratory investigations found a positive TST at 20mm but the Koch bacillus was not isolated. The patient received treatment for tuberculosis, corticosteroids, retinal argon laser photocoagulation, and vitrectomy in

Epidemiology of HIV infection in urban Burkina Faso.

We conducted a cross-sectional study of sexually transmitted disease and HIV infections among a random sample of the 2364 adult population in 2000 in Bobo-Dioulasso, the second largest town in Burkina Faso. The prevalence of HIV infection was 5.2%. Risk factor analysis was conducted among sexually active men 20 to 34 years old and women 15 to 24 years old. Factors independently associated with HIV infection among men were having been married (adjusted odds ratio (aOR)=8.19 [1.70-39]), reporting more than two non-marital partners in the last 12 months (aOR=6.07 [1.14-32.4]), reporting a past ur

Trachoma, flies and environmental factors in Burkina Faso.

The presence of flies is one of the earliest risk factors for trachoma and it has been suggested that flies could act as vectors for transmission of chlamydiae. A national trachoma survey was conducted in 1997 in Burkina Faso to (i) study the relationship between trachoma occurrence, flies, dirty faces and some environmental factors, and (ii) investigate the role of flies in the presence of trachoma. The country was stratified into eight groups of provinces and a random sample of 30 clusters was selected in each group. All children aged < 10 years were examined for the diagnosis of active trac

Dracunculiasis in Burkina Faso: results of a national survey.

National surveys using active reporting are essential steps in the global dracunculiasis eradication programme. All the known villages of Burkina Faso were visited at the end of 1990 by teams of field-workers who organized meetings with local informants in order to enquire about all cases of the emergence of Guinea worms during the past twelve months. The annual incidence for 1990 was then calculated using recent demographic data. Data collected were validated by a second survey of a random sample of 221 villages. The national coverage rate was 99.3% of villages; 42,227 cases were reported. Th

[Filarial multiparasitism in the savannah zone in Burkina Faso].

From june 1985 to may 1986, 1.209 consulting patients were examined for filariae in skin and blood. Among patients with microfilariae 17% had associations of filarial infections. The multiple infections rate seemed more important in man than woman and increased with age. The results showed that associations were not due to chance only. The frequencies of associations between Dipetalonema perstans and Onchocerca volvulus at one hand, Dipetalonema perstans and Wuchereria bancrofti on the other hand were highly significant. Symptoms of filarial associations were studied and subsequent therapeutic

Bacterial vaginosis among pregnant women in Burkina Faso.

OBJECTIVES: Bacterial vaginosis (bv) is a common cause of abnormal or altered vaginal discharge in women of childbearing age. Its association with obstetric and gynecologic complications and HIV are increasingly recognized. Few population-based surveys of BV have been conducted in Africa. The objective of the study was to examine the role of genital infections including Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) and demographic factors on the prevalence of BV among pregnant women in Burkina Faso. METHODS: Consenting pregnant women from Burkina Faso answered a face-to-face interview on their demograp

Delineation of onchocerciasis operational transmission zones of Burkina Faso.

BACKGROUND: Defining the transmission zones for onchocerciasis is a critical first step needed in an endemic country aiming to eliminate the transmission of onchocerciasis. The process focuses on defining the geographical boundaries of areas where onchocerciasis transmission could persist with minimal influence from neighbouring regions. The use of operational transmission zones (OTZs) allows for assessment of interruption of onchocerciasis transmission with greater certainty within endemic countries. METHODS: We used available environmental, epidemiological and entomological data on onchocer

Implementation of tuberculosis prevention for exposed children, Burkina Faso.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and test a simple system for recording and reporting the diagnosis and treatment of latent tuberculosis infection and to compare the effects of passive and active tracing of child contacts on indicators of such infection. METHODS: We revised Burkina Faso's latent tuberculosis infection register and quarterly tuberculosis reporting form. Subsequently, coverage of the routine screening of contacts, who were younger than five years, for active tuberculosis and the corresponding percentages of such contacts who, if eligible, initiated preventive therapy were measured, nation

Leptospirosis as Cause of Febrile Icteric Illness, Burkina Faso.

Patients in Burkina Faso who sought medical attention for febrile jaundice were tested for leptospirosis. We confirmed leptospirosis in 27 (3.46%) of 781 patients: 23 (2.94%) tested positive using serologic assays and 4 (0.51%) using LipL32 PCR. We further presumed leptospirosis in 16 (2.82%) IgM-positive specimens.

Leishmania major and HIV co-infection in Burkina Faso.

The incidence of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) has increased in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso since 1996. A study was carried out from September to November 2000 to determine the impact of HIV on this outbreak. Of 74 CL patients, 10 were co-infected with HIV. The percentage of CL in patients positive for HIV was slightly higher than the percentage of HIV patients in Ouagadougou. However, the study showed that HIV infection did not increase the risk of CL infection.

Risk factors of adolescent exposure to violence in Burkina Faso.

BACKGROUND: Globally violence against children and adolescents is a significant public health problem. Since children rely on family for early learning and socialization, evidence of the factors associated with exposure to violence within households may inform the development of policies and measures to prevent violence and aid the victims of violence. This study examines the risk and protective factors associated with adolescents' exposure to violence at home and how these differ by gender and age in four regions of Burkina Faso. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used data from the baseline survey o

Designing and Piloting a Specimen Transport System in Burkina Faso.

Efficient specimen transport systems are critical for early disease detection and reporting by laboratory networks. In Burkina Faso, centralized reference laboratories receive specimens from multiple surveillance sites for testing, but transport methods vary, resulting in potential delays and risk to specimen quality. The ministry of health and partners, under the Global Health Security Agenda implementation, piloted a specimen transport system for severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) surveillance in 4 Burkina Faso districts. A baseline assessment was conducted of the current specimen trans

Occurrence of Vibrio cholerae in water reservoirs of Burkina Faso.

Africa is currently an important region in which cholera epidemics occur. Little is known about the presence of Vibrio cholerae in freshwater bodies in Africa. There are ca. 1700 lakes and reservoirs in Burkina Faso, most of which have been built within recent decades to secure water resources. The purpose of this study was to investigate the presence of V. cholerae in the water of reservoirs, using the most-probable-number polymerase chain reaction. Results showed that V. cholerae could be detected in water samples collected from 14 of 39 sampled reservoirs. The concentrations varied from 0 M

Recrudescence of onchocerciasis in the Comoé valley in Southwest Burkina Faso.

Onchocerciasis control by vector control was instigated in southwest Burkina Faso in January 1969 by ORSTOM/OCCGE, and continued until operations were taken over by the WHO Onchocerciasis Control Programme (OCP) in February 1975, which itself ceased operations in the area in 1989 when onchocerciasis was judged to have been reduced to insignificant levels. Initially (1969-1975) vector immigration maintained unacceptably high levels of transmission, but OCP was much larger than the preceding campaign and in 1975 the Annual Transmission Potential (ATP) dropped below 100 at all sites in the Comoé
