Toxic epidermal necrolysis is the name given to a group of dermatologic disorders characterized by a separation of epidermis and dermis with a subsequent skin slough. The denuded areas have the appearance of a second-degree burn. The complications of infection, negative nitrogen balance, severe pain, and emotional instability are identical to those seen in the patient with major burns. There are difficulties in patient management and advantages in burn unit care. As with the major burn, care of the patient with skin loss from toxic epidermal necrolysis is extremely complex, requiring the exper

BACKGROUND: Burns among prisoners are complex to manage. Barriers to timely first aid and specialist care may contribute to worse outcomes, yet data on this population remain limited. This study characterized the epidemiology, injury patterns, first aid provision and follow-up engagement of prisoners with burns, to inform improvements to service provision.
METHODS: We conducted a 10-year retrospective cohort study of all prisoners treated for burn injuries at a UK regional burns unit between March 2015 and April 2025. Data were extracted from medical records, including demographics, injury ch

A retrospective chart review was conducted for 100 patients treated in our Burn Unit to study the incidence and nature of burn wound infection, which is our most common and serious complication in burns. Quantitative estimates of infection were obtained by culturing bacterial flora from surface swabs. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the predominant burn wound pathogen, only a few patients developed fungal infections. A significant association was found between increasing burn size and increasing incidence of Gram-negative invasive organisms. Restriction in the prophylactic usage of antibiotics and

The exogenous contamination of a thermally injured patient by contact with the health are team has been a major concern of all burn units. Since the University of Chicago Burn Center routinely monitors each burn injury for sepsis by quantitative bacteriology and recently examined the microbial population present on the hands of the health care team, it was felt that these combined data would shed some pertinent information on exogenous burn wound sepsis. Twenty-nine patients with clinical burn wound sepsis and a bacterial level of greater than 10(5) bacteria/gram of tissue were studied. These

BACKGROUND: A national database is used to evaluate pediatric burn survivor outcomes, but the generalizability to the United States pediatric burn injury population is unclear, as only 60% of enrollees are U.S. residents. An increased understanding of population similarities and differences between residents of the United States and residents of Mexico treated in the United States within this database will help determine its ability to extrapolate.
OBJECTIVE: Assess the generalizability of a national burn database to the U.S. pediatric burn injury population.
DESIGN: This retrospective cohor

BACKGROUND: Burn trauma in paediatric patients continues to be highly relevant socio-economically since the number of inpatients treated per year has not declined over the past few decades. The treatment of paediatric burn victims places high demands on medical staff and the use of wound dressings and surgical techniques. This study aimed to give a current overview of the inpatient management and treatment methods for paediatric burn patients at a specialised burn centre in Vienna.
PATIENTS/MATERIAL AND METHODS: All children and adolescents who were treated at the children's ward of the Divis

Occupational stress is an emerging problem among physician and nurses, and those working in intensive care settings are particularly exposed to the risk of developing burnout. To verify what types of interventions to manage occupational stress and burn out within neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) have been introduced so far and to verify their efficacy among caregivers. BACKGROUND: Hypothermia is common after major burn injury and may influence both systemic and wound-related outcomes. Although hypothermia has been associated with coagulopathy and higher rates of mortality in the trauma patient cohort, limited literature has examined its effects on the outcomes for patients with burns. The aim of this study was to identify the rate of hypothermia in patients transferred to a specialised burn unit, and to assess the impact on morbidity and mortality.
METHODS: This retrospective, single-centre study examined all burns presentations between 2009-2013. Hypotherm

INTRODUCTION: Nutritional status predicts burn outcomes in the developed world, but its effect on burn mortality in the developing world has not been widely studied. In sub Saharan Africa, burn is primarily a disease of children, and the majority of children in sub-Saharan Africa are malnourished. We therefore sought to determine the prevalence and effect of malnutrition on burn mortality at our institution.
METHODS: This is a retrospective review of children aged 0-5, with anthropomorphic measurements available, who were admitted to our burn unit from July 2011 to May 2016. Age-adjusted Z sc

BACKGROUND: Infections are a major problem in burns patients. Knowledge of the incidence and antimicrobial sensitivities of the microorganisms commonly encountered within each institution's burns unit is important as it informs and directs empiric antibiotic therapy.
METHODS: This was a retrospective review of patients admitted from 1 January 2008 to 31 December 2012 to an adult burns intensive care unit. Specimens chosen for analysis were wound swabs, blood cultures, venous catheter tips, tracheal aspirates, sputum, urine and wound tissue. Records were accessed from the admission register an

OBJECTIVE: In low- and middle-income countries, bloodstream infections are an important cause of mortality in patients with burns. Increasingly implicated in burn-associated infections are highly drug-resistant pathogens with limited treatment options. We describe the epidemiology of bloodstream infections in patients with burns in a humanitarian surgery project in Iraq.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective, descriptive study of blood culture isolates identified between July 2008 and September 2009 among patients with burns in a single hospital in Iraq who developed sepsis.
RESULTS: In 1169

In a 1 year study, 342 patients admitted to the Burns Unit at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH), Blantyre, Malawi underwent a voluntary HIV test. Forty (11.7%) tested HIV positive: of those aged above 15 years, 31% (34 out of 112) were HIV positive, whilst 3% (6 of 231) aged under 15 were HIV positive of whom the majority were in those aged under 5 years (5 of 125, 4%). Patients who were HIV positive had an increased risk of death (P=0.04) which was mainly due to sepsis, but those HIV patients, who did not develop infection or recovered from an episode of sepsis, had similar hospital sta

Intensive care unit-acquired weakness is an evolving problem in the burn population. As patients are surviving injuries that previously would have been fatal, the focus of treatment is shifting from survival to long-term outcome. The rehabilitation of burn patients can be challenging; however, a certain subgroup of patients have worse outcomes than others. These patients may suffer from intensive care unit-acquired weakness, and their treatment, physiotherapy and expectations need to be adjusted accordingly. This study investigates the condition of intensive care unit-acquired weakness in our

INTRODUCTION: Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis is a drug-induced life-threatening systemic disease, characterized by extensive dermoepidermal detachment and mucositis. At least 95% of cases are believed to be drug-induced. SCORTEN is a scoring system used to stratify severity and predict mortality. Treatment demands immediate withdrawal of the causative drug and early transfer to a burn centre for specific and intensive care.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Authors have performed a retrospective study of 21 consecutive patients with SJS/ Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis admitted in the Burn Centre of Coimbra's Uni

AIM: The number of hospital presentations and admissions for treatment of sunburn remains significant, despite efforts to educate the public regarding sun protection. Current literature chiefly examines public health campaigns and sun protection behaviours and attitudes. There are very few articles that explore paediatric sunburn requiring hospital presentation. This study was therefore undertaken to provide a snapshot of this issue and to identify patterns and causative factors in the development of severe sunburn requiring hospital presentation.
METHODS: Data were collected for retrospectiv
