Hyperkalemia in electrical burns: A retrospective study in Colombia.

INTRODUCTION: Classically, hyperkalemia has been regarded as a complication in patients with electrical burns. The etiology of hyperkalemia includes metabolic acidosis, destruction of red blood cells, rhabdomyolysis and the development of renal failure. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of hyperkalemia within the first 24h after electrical burn injury and to evaluate the possible association of serum potassium concentration with cutaneous burn size (%TBSA) and serum creatine phosphokinase (CPK) concentration. METHODS: A retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducte

Autonomic dysfunction and osteoporosis after electrical burn.

INTRODUCTION: Several studies have shown the importance of the sympathetic nervous system in bone metabolism. There is an evidence of sympathetic skin response (SSR) impairment in electrical burn patients up to 2 years after their injuries. The acute phase of burn is accompanied by increased bone resorption. Whether the prolonged dysfunction of sympathetic nervous system may result in bone metabolism derangement even after the acute phase of electrical burn is the inspiring question for this study. And we tried to find correlation between SSR abnormality and areal bone mineral density (BMD) in

Electrical burns in sports fishing: a case report.

Electrical burns are among the most devastating types of burns, with wide-ranging injuries. They can sometimes occur in the context of fishing, usually involving high voltages. The authors present the case of a 59-year-old-man who suffered a sports accident during a fishing competition, with the formation of an electrical arc due to proximity of the fishing rod and high voltage cables. He presented burns affecting 3% of TBSA, third degree deep burns on trunk and left hand; no signs of cardiac injury. He was admitted to our Burn Unit for monitoring, care dressing and surgical treatment; complet

Sympathetic skin response in electrical burn injury.

BACKGROUND: Electrical burn has been reported to be highly associated with peripheral neuropathy. This study was designed to evaluate the sympathetic skin response (SSR) of electrical burn patients to determine whether the sympathetic nervous system is involved in these patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sympathetic skin response of 28 patients, suffering from electrical burn injury (divided into two groups of high voltage and low voltage exposure) was compared with that of 28 matched subjects, who had never experienced electrical burn. Bilateral palmar and plantar latency and amplitude of

Analysis of Electrocardiograms Associated with Pediatric Electrical Burns.

The purpose of this study was to examine the utility of electrocardiograms (EKGs) for low-risk, low-voltage pediatric electrical burn victims. A retrospective chart review was conducted on 86 pediatric patients who presented to the children's hospital between 2000 and 2015 after sustaining electrical burns. Variables included source and estimated voltage, extent of injuries, length of stay, high risk factors, and EKG results. High risk factors included estimated voltage > 1000 V, lightning, tetany, symptoms, loss of consciousness, or seizures. Statistical analyses were conducted. Average age w

[Perioral electrical burn in children: case report].

Perioral electrical burns are rarely seen household injuries that cause both functional and aesthetic deformities requiring special consideration for reconstruction. The cause is usually a child younger than 3 years old biting an electrical cord. An eleven-month-old girl admitted to the emergency room with perioral electrical burn after biting an electrical cable of a television. Her burn area included 60% of the lower lip, down to the mentum, and including left commissure, distal part of the tongue and the floor of the mouth. On the 8th day following the burn, the burned necrotic tissues sepa

Electrical burns of the upper extremity in the pediatric population.

Electrical burns of the upper extremity, particularly high-voltage injuries, are becoming more prevalent in today's society and are often times devastating to the patients' appearance and functionality. The basic tenants of flame burn reconstruction apply to electrical injuries. Namely, a patient should undergo basic trauma resuscitation, decompression and debridement within a reasonable timeframe, and definitive closure as soon as possible. Reconstruction of the 3 main areas of injury (hand, elbow, and axilla) follows the basic reconstructive ladder from least invasive, that is, local wound r

An eleven-year survey of electrical burn injuries.

One hundred eighty-six patients with electrical burns were treated within an 11-year period at The Hacettepe University Burn Unit. Both children and adults were treated in this burn unit. The main causes of injury were misuse of electrical appliances, inattentiveness, lack of education in safety precautions, and lack of parental supervision. Treatment consisted of first, normal resuscitation in which Ringer's lactate solution was administered (according to the Parkland formula). Fluid resuscitation was followed by debridement, fasciotomy, and escharatomy. Two major complications were encounter

Reconstruction of the oral commissure after an electrical burn.

A burn of the oral commissure is one of the most common types of electrical injury in children. To minimize postoperative wound contracture in late reconstructive surgery, a functional reconstruction that combines excision of the burn scar with lateral advancement of the orbicularis oris muscle, re-creation of the modiolus labii, and reestablishment of vermilion continuity has been developed. Functional restoration of the labial musculature to the preinjury position with re-creation of the modiolus labii and reestablishment of vermilion continuity appears to significantly decrease the amount o

Posttraumatic stress disorder in electric burn patients.

It was hypothesized that burn injuries electric in origin may have a poor prognosis for rehabilitation and return to work. Ten electrically injured burn patients were compared to seven patients whose burns were nonelectric, after all 17 had shown clinically significant emotional problems during rehabilitation. Results of psychological tests from both groups were also compared to results in three other groups: psychiatric, chronic pain, and blepharospasm patients. Results indicated that patients with electric burns had the most severe psychopathologic symptoms and the least likelihood of return

Experience of the treatment of severe electric burns on special parts of the body.

The treatment in these eight cases with severe electric burns on special parts of the body was successful. Our experience can be summarized as follows: (1) The role of the immediate measures including resuscitation at the scene of the accident cannot be understated. If the patient presents with a complex injury such as open pneumothorax, first aid should be provided immediately and then the patient should be transferred to a specialized treatment center. (2) General conditions such as the presence of shock, water-electrolyte balance, renal function, and others should be continuously monitored.

Riding Toward Danger: A Scoping Review of Burns Associated With Personal Mobility Devices, Including Electric Bikes (E-Bikes) and Electric Scooters (E-Scooters).

Burn injuries related to lithium-ion batteries from personal mobility devices, such as electric bikes and electric scooters, have emerged as a global concern. By examining the literature, this study aims to provide an overview of the demographics, patterns, and outcomes of personal mobility device-associated burns. A Singaporean cohort revealed burns resulting predominantly from fires occurring due to the combustion of unattended personal mobility device batteries during charging. In contrast, an Israeli cohort showed a higher total body surface area and highlighted the vulnerability of limbs

We Got Your Back: Evaluating Recovery Following Spinal Cord Injury After High-Voltage Electric Burns.

Delayed spinal cord injury (SCI) is a relatively rare consequence of high voltage electrical burns, but it holds significant implications for patient quality of life. Due to the uncommon nature of delayed SCI and variable time of onset following injury, providers are currently unable to provide a prognosis for functional recovery and optimize a therapy process tailored to treat this patient populace. In this study, we aim to better map the pattern of recovery in these patients to better inform future rehabilitation practices. A retrospective chart review of five patients who experienced delaye
