OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the anatomical relationship of the congenital calcaneal bursae in the bovine, and describe the computed tomography (CT), endoscopic and gross anatomy of these bursae.
STUDY DESIGN: Ex vivo experimental.
SAMPLE POPULATION: Eighteen clinically normal cadaver bovine hindlimbs.
METHODS: Intrasynovial injection of iodinated contrast and methylene blue into the intertendinous calcaneal bursa (ICB) (n = 16) or gastrocnemius calcaneal bursa (GCB) (n = 2). Limbs were imaged post-contrast injection using multidetector CT. Endoscopic examination

Synovial cysts of the pulp of the little finger in three elderly patients were shown by arthrography to arise from leakage of synovial fluid from the wrist joint into the ulnar bursa and thence into the flexor synovial sheath in the digit. Distant as well as local sources of the contents of synovial cysts should be considered when the local anatomy permits communication between a degenerate joint and an adjacent tendon sheath.

Synovial osteochondromatosis is a rare benign pathology arising from the synovial membrane of the joints, synovial sheaths or uncommonly the bursae around the joints. Baker's cysts are fluid filled, synovium-lined lesions arising in popliteal fossa. Synovial chondromatosis involving the Baker`s cyst is extremely rare. The aim of this case report is to document this exceedingly rare extra articular synovial pathology involving Baker's cysts of bilateral knees and to emphasize the importance of radiographs and sonography in the diagnosis.

Synovial chondromatosis of the shoulder is a rare disorder characterized by metaplastic synovial proliferation, causing multiple loose bodies usually localized intra-articularly. Surgical treatment with open techniques through a deltopectoral approach has been commonly used. The evolution of arthroscopy has allowed a complete joint assessment and the extraction of intra-articular loose bodies with less morbidity than open techniques. Nevertheless, this pathology occurs less frequently in the subcoracoid bursa. Access to this bursa may be more complicated when extracting loose bodies that cause

Synovial cysts are far less common at the hip than at the knee and usually occur in patients whose hip cavity communicates with the iliopsoas bursa. We report 12 cases of enlargement of the iliopsoas bursa, nine men and three women, with a mean age of 48 years. The six patients with septic bursitis had severe symptoms similar to those seen in septic arthritis of the hip. Chronic pain with or without a palpable inguinal swelling was the main symptom in the six remaining patients, some of whom had compression of neighboring structures making the diagnosis more difficult. Ultrasonography is the b

INTRODUCTION: Multiple bony loose bodies in the subacromial space caused form cartilage or bone cells and continue to grow.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 58-year-old man with two-year history of swelling and pain of the right shoulder. He had no history of tuberculosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Magnetic resonance (MR) images showed some bony loose bodies in the subacromial space. The removal of loose bodies and bursa debridement were performed arthroscopically. Histological diagnosis of them was synovitis with fibrous bodies.
DISCUSSION: Extra-articular loose bodies is extremely rare, especially i

Laminated tears of the rotator cuff are often lined by a cellular layer that has an appearance suggestive of synovium. This study demonstrates, by histologic and immunohistochemical means, that the lining cells are synovial. It remains unclear whether these cells arise by synovial extension from the joint or bursa, or by metaplasia in the presence of synovial fluid, and this has implications for surgical repair of laminated cuff defects. We suggest that these defects be curetted, to remove at least some of this synovial lining, before suture repair.

Knee pain is commonly seen in orthopedic and rehabilitation outpatient clinical settings, and in the aging population. Bursitis of the knee joint, especially when the volume of the synovial fluid is large enough, can compress and distend the nearby soft tissues, causing pain in the knee joint. Out of all the bursae surrounding the knee joint, supra-patellar bursitis is most often associated with knee pain. Treatment strategies in managing supra-patellar bursitis include the aspiration of joint synovial fluid and then followed by steroid injection into the bursa. When supra-patellar bursitis is

A 73-year-old woman presented with a recurrent cystic mass around her left olecranon. She had a history of 8 steroid injections due to elbow pain beginning 3 years ago and twice had undergone aspiration of olecranon bursitis that developed two months prior to presentation. She had been taking medications for hypertension and diabetes with no pertinent past history. On magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), there were multiple nodules in the olecranon bursa, which were isointense to muscle on T1-weighted images and hyperintense to muscle on T2-weighted images. Our initial diagnosis was synovial chon

BACKGROUND: Bursitis is the inflammation of a synovial bursa, a small synovial fluid-filled sac that acts as a cushion between muscles, tendons, and bones. Further, calcific bursitis results from calcium deposits on the synovial joint that exacerbates pain and swelling. The Gruberi bursa is located dorsolaterally in the ankle, between the extensor digitorium longus and the talus. Despite limited literature on its pathophysiology, the aim of this case is to discuss the bursa's association with calcific bursitis and its management via a case presented to our clinic.

Synovial chondromatosis is a rare benign condition arising from the synovial membrane of the joints, synovial sheaths or bursae around the joints. Primary synovial chondromatosis typically affects the large joints in the third to fifth decade of life. The purpose of this case report is to document this rare synovial pathology, which required open synovectomy and debridement to eradicate it. In our case, the biggest sized SOC was 20x19x6 cm, although there were many joint mice. Our case had the biggest SOC ever extracted, which to the best of my knowledge has not been reported earlier.

The bicipitoradial bursa lies at the insertion of the biceps tendon on the radial tuberosity. It is an unusual site for chronic bursitis and most often, results from repetitive mechanical trauma or overuse. Other causes include tuberculosis, immunological complications of the rheumatological disease, for example, psoriatic arthropathy, rheumatoid arthritis and synovial chondromatosis. Unlike ganglion cyst arising from the elbow joint, resection of the bursa through the elbow arthroscopy is not possible as the bursa is not communicated with the joint. We reported a patient with rheumatoid arthr

Intraarticular chondromatosis is subdivided into primary (synovial) and secondary one. Synovial chondromatosis is a benign, focal proliferation of cartilaginous tissue within the synovial membrane of a joint, articular bursa and tendons. More often synovial chondromatosis is present in the synovial membrane. Some nodules loose a bond to the synovial membrane and form chondromal intraarticular bodies that are freely located within the joint cavity. Secondary intraarticular chondromatosis develops in the presence of a pre-existing process, such as injury, degenerative joint diseases including os

Macroscopic synovitis of the glenohumeral joint is frequently seen during arthroscopy in patients with anterior instability. Interleukin-1beta is known to be expressed in inflamed tissue, to correlate with the magnitude of inflammation, and to affect articular cartilage in the joint. We hypothesized that chronic synovitis may occur in the glenohumeral joint in patients with anterior instability. The purpose of this study was to examine the expression of interleukin-1beta in the synovium of the glenohumeral joint with anterior instability and to discuss its clinicopathologic significance. Cystic lesions around the knee comprise a diverse group of entities, ranging from benign cysts to complications of underlying diseases such as infection, arthritis, and malignancy. Their diverse causes result in varied prognoses and therapeutic options. Although the presentation of cystic masses may be similar, their management may differ, thus highlighting the importance of appropriate categorization. MR aids in the characterization of lesions by first localizing them, and then defining their relationship with adjacent structures and identifying any additional abnormalities. For the purpose o

The synovium is a specialized tissue lining the synovial joints, bursae, and tendon sheaths of the body. It is affected by various localized or systemic disorders. Synovial diseases can be classified as inflammatory, infectious, degenerative, traumatic, hemorrhagic, and neoplastic. Damage in other intraarticular structures, particularly cartilages, generally occurs as a part of pathologic processes involving the synovium, leading to irreversible joint destruction. Imaging has an essential role in the early detection of synovial diseases prior to irreversible joint damage. Obtaining and underst

BACKGROUND: Recent studies report a relatively high failure rate for tendon-bone healing after rotator cuff repair. Several studies have investigated biologically augmented rotator cuff repair; however, none has shown the application of synovial mesenchymal stem cells for such repair.
PURPOSE: To demonstrate whether cells derived from shoulder tissues have mesenchymal stem cell properties and to identify which tissue is the best source of the mesenchymal stem cells.
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.
METHODS: Forty-two patients with a diagnosed rotator cuff tear preoperatively were

A case of prepatellar bursitis in a man with chronic brucellosis is presented. Brucella abortus biotype 1 was isolated from the abundant yellowish fluid obtained from the bursa. Clinical and epidemiological data did not suggest a direct inoculation of the agent in the bursa. However, the patient mentioned occasional local trauma due to recreational sports, which may have constituted a predisposing factor. As determined by ELISA, there were higher levels of IgG against Brucella LPS and cytosolic proteins detected in the patient's bursal synovial fluid when compared with serum. Levels of proinfl
