A sample of the population of 20 'collines' (administrative units) of the province of Bururi (Burundi, Central Africa) was examined to determine the prevalence and intensity of onchocerciasis in this endemic region. In all, 34.4% of the population is infected, that is about 80,000 people for the whole area. Around Rumonge onchocerciasis is hyperendemic. This area is surrounded by a mesoendemic zone and at the periphery onchocerciasis is hypoendemic. The clinical examination of a subsample showed that pruritus and skin lesions are not very frequent (58.2 and 28.1% respectively in positive perso

Bacillary dysentery which occurs endemoepidemically in Burundi is currently on the rise and requires close epidemiologic and therapeutic monitoring. Sensitivity tests using 13 antibiotics were performed on 299 strains of shigella isolated at the Biology Laboratory of the Bujumbura University Hospital Center. The technique used to test antibiotic sensitivity was the disc diffusion method described by Chabert et al. Of the 299 strains studied, 250 (83.6%) were species of Shigella dysenteriae type 1. All isolated Shigella bacillus were resistant to ampicillin, sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, tetra

Data are presented on 633 strains of Shigella, and 197 strains of Salmonella, isolated in Bujumbura, capital of Burundi, between 1980 and 1985. The epidemiology of shigellosis is dominated by the resurgence of the Shiga bacillus and by its increasing resistance against all available antibacterial drugs. Salmonellosis is caused by a limited range of serotypes, most of them, with the exception of the typhoid bacillus, becoming multiresistant. Bacteriaemia with S. enteritidis is a frequent complication in patients with AIDS.

BACKGROUND: Taenia solium cysticercosis is a zoonotic disease that is endemic in many low- and middle-income countries where risk factors for disease transmission are present. The economic impact of cysticercosis on public health and on the pig production sector is not well known in many of those countries, including Burundi. This study aimed at estimating the burden of T. solium cysticercosis in Burundi including data on humans and pigs.
METHODS: Epidemiological and economic data were collected from literature up to July 30, 2021 and governmental and non-governmental agencies. Direct and ind

HIV infection was present in 18 out of 40 (45%) consecutive malnourished children aged 2 to 29 months in pediatric wards of Bujumbura, Burundi. No difference was observed within and between the seropositive and seronegative groups for sex and anthropometric measures. HIV seropositive cases could be explained by a HIV seropositive mother (83%) or by a transfusion history (17%). The onset of marasmus was earlier in the HIV seropositive group (5 cases observed less than 6 months old compared to none of the other group, Fischer's exact test: P = 0.026). A more complex clinical picture was seen in

Described is the evolution of the schistosomiasis control programme in Burundi since 1985. A single round of selective population chemotherapy was carried out in the Rusizi Plain and the Bugesera focus from 1985 to 1990. The prevalences and intensities of infection as well as the number of symptomatic cases detected in general health services decreased considerably. Annual sample surveys in the treated areas showed, however, that these improvements were rapidly reversed by reinfection of the demographically changing population. Since repeated selective population chemotherapy was not sustainab

To determine the types of pulmonary disease associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, we conducted a prospective study of 302 consecutive patients admitted for acute respiratory disease to a university hospital in Bujumbura, Burundi. Diagnoses were made according to well-defined criteria. Of the total, 222 patients (73.5%) were HIV seropositive, with women younger than men. Features suggestive of underlying HIV infection were the clinical findings of oral thrush, peripheral lymphadenopathy, or herpes zoster and the radiographic abnormalities of hilar-mediastinal adenopathy

This article describes a humanitarian teaching mission dedicated to managing complex posterior perineal injuries in Burundi. These conditions, which result from prolonged labor in low-resource settings, may lead to fecal incontinence, causing social exclusion and loss of dignity. Through the perspective of medical students, this article offers an exploratory view of these pathologies and the model of knowledge transfer, highlighting the importance of sharing skills with the next generation of healthcare professionals. Beyond technical expertise, this approach aims to restore patients' dignity

BACKGROUND: In Africa, the transmission of Monkeypox (mpox), especially in countries that were initially unaffected, including Burundi, is still inefficiently reported. This study has analyzed various demographics and cases, alongside the transmission pathways and risk factors to apprise effective, setting-specific control strategies for mitigation of mpox outbreaks while also guiding prospective responses to similar outbreaks in resource-restricted contexts.
METHODS: To effectively characterize the transmission patterns of clade Ib monkeypox virus, the study evaluated the laboratory-confirme

Cysticercosis is a major zoonotic disease in many developing countries leading to substantial economic and public health impacts on affected communities. Due to a lack of updated data on T. solium cysticercosis in Burundi, the present study was carried out to determine the prevalence of porcine cysticercosis and to identify potential associated risk factors in Ngozi province. This study was conducted in Ngozi and Marangara communes of Ngozi province during January and February 2020. A multistage random sampling strategy was used. Tongue palpation was performed on pigs to diagnose cysticercosis

PURPOSE: To establish that trachoma is a public health problem in Burundi, and to provide baseline data on the prevalence of active trachoma and unclean faces prior to the commencement of trachoma elimination activities in endemic districts.
METHODS: For each of 11 pilot districts, eight collines (hills) (estimated population generally 1000-8000) were selected at random using a population-proportional-to-size technique; from each selected colline, one sous-colline (of which there are generally 3-5 per colline) was selected at random by simple random draw. In each selected sous-colline, all av

The specificity of schistosome circulating antigen detection was determined in negative individuals from two S. mansoni- endemic countries, Senegal and Burundi, and compared with results from Dutch control individuals. A nearly absolute specificity was achieved for circulating anodic antigen (CAA) detection in serum, irrespective of the target population or sample pretreatment method. Circulating cathodic antigen (CCA) detection in serum and urine resulted in a lower specificity than serum CAA detection. Apparent large differences in specificity of CCA detection between countries were mainly d

In 9 'collines' (administrative units) of the province of Rutana (Burundi) a sample of the population was examined to determine the prevalence and intensity of onchocerciasis in this endemic region. In all, the area is hypoendemic with 7.9% of the population infected. This means that, in a population of 52,000, about 4000 persons are parasitised. The intensity of onchocerciasis is low, in general. Clinical examination in a subsample of 4 collines showed that the number of people with onchocerciasis who complain about pruritus or who have skin lesions is limited (respectively 54.4% and 38.1%).

The prevalence and intensity of onchocerciasis in the endemic region of the provinces of Cibitoke and Bubanza (Burundi) have been determined through the examination of a sample of the population of 33 "collines" (administrative units). On average, 15.8% of the population was positive, which means that in a population at risk of 330,000, about 52,000 people are infected. The area is hypoendemic, but some mesoendemic pockets exist along the middle portion of the Ruhwa, Muhira and Kaburantwa rivers. The clinical examination of a subsample showed that respectively 69.1% and 48.6% of infected perso

Groups of cattle of four different cross-breeds (Ankole x Friesian, Ankole x Brown-Swiss, Ankole x Guernsey, Ankole x Sahiwal) plus a group of pure Ankole cattle were immunized against tick-borne diseases: East Coast Fever, using a Theileria parva trivalent vaccine, and anaplasmosis, babesiosis and, subsequently, heartwater. With the exception of two small subgroups of Ankole and Ankole x Sahiwal which were treated by weekly spraying using Delnav, all the groups were exposed to natural field challenge of ticks to quantify the development of host resistance to ticks. The results indicate resist

Morbidity due to infection with Schistosoma mansoni was investigated in a recently discovered highland focus around Lake Cohoha, Burundi. The distribution of the infection was very focal and morbidity patterns in populations from an endemic area A (prevalence 38%, mean egg load of positive subjects 231 eggs per gram [epg]), a less affected area B (16%, 90 epg) and a virtually non-endemic area C (5%, 45 epg), were compared; apart from schistosomiasis, the profiles of these populations were highly similar. The overall frequencies of diarrhoea were 36%, 25%, and 19%, respectively; of abdominal pa

The authors describe their experience of the infection by the virus of the human immunodeficiency HIV-1 in Burundi. The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome was brought to light in 1983 by the emergence of cryptococcal meningitis, Kaposi's sarcomas, disseminated candidiasis. 109 cases of infection by the virus of the human immunodeficiency (HIV) AIDS related complex, or acquired immunodeficiency syndromes, were observed in 8 months and are related in this paper. The authors elucidate the spread and amplify the role played by lorry drivers. The frequency of recent case history: tuberculosis, zona
