The authors investigated the role of US in the diagnostic-prognostic evaluation of enteric intussusception, for the use of US-guided pneumatic reduction (RPEG). In the last 5 years, 59 young patients were examined; 44 of them had clinically suspected enteric intussusception which was confirmed by US. Ascaris lumbricoides is a worldwide intestinal infestation that may cause various complications. Biliary ascariasis, however, is a rare condition. We describe a child with biliary ascariasis. The patient's clinical symptoms were pain, vomiting and abdominal tenderness, and she was thought to have acute appendicitis. However, laboratory examination revealed high serum alkaline phosphatase and amylase levels, and ultrasonography and percutaneous cholangiography demonstrated biliary ascariasis. The patient was successfully treated with mebendazole and antispasmolytic drugs.

The influence of the spasmolytic drugs hyoscin-N-butylbromide (HBB, Buscopan) and Extractum opii (E. opii) on bile flow, bile salt and bilirubin excretion is investigated in the cholecystectomized, unanaesthetized pig and compared with the results after acute, quantitative interruption of the enterohepatic circulation (EHC) by biliary drainage. The results demonstrate that HBB and E. opii induce a significant decrease in bile flow and bile salt excretion. "Buscopan" (hyoscine-n-butylbromide, HBB) is a smooth muscle relaxant regularly used in radiological and endoscopic procedures. One unwanted effect is temporary impairment of visual accommodation. Transient diverticula are radiological phenomena that can be observed in a minority of patients undergoing barium enema. Radiographs before and after smooth muscle relaxation are required. Diverticula seen on the early radiographs may, in some patients, disappear following the intravenous administration of 20 mg hyoscine-N-butylbromide (Buscopan). Using this technique in 441 examinations, transient diverticula have been observed in 18 patients (4.1%). They exhibit many features of established diverticula which suggests that they represent an incipient stage of the disease.
