Relating statin therapy to C-reactive protein levels.

Inflammation is pivotal in atherosclerosis, and C-reactive protein (CRP) is an inflammatory marker that predicts cardiovascular events. The Reversal of Atherosclerosis with Aggressive Lipid Lowering (REVERSAL) trial compared the standard lowering of low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol with pravastatin 40 mg/day, with the intense lowering of LDL-cholesterol with atorvastatin 80 mg/day on atheroma volume in patients with coronary artery disease, and showed that the atheroma progressed by 2.7% in the pravastatin group, and remained unchanged in the atorvastatin group. At 18 months follow-up

C-reactive protein and end-stage renal disease.

The significance of CRP and inflammation has increased over time, especially in the end-stage renal disease (ESRD) population. From a simple marker it now appears that CRP is an active participant in pro-atherosclerotic phenomenon including local pro-inflammatory and thrombotic events. Studies in the general population indicate the usefulness of CRP in prognostication and in monitoring response to therapy. The clinical usefulness of CRP monitoring in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and especially in ESRD deserves closer study. In the meantime, the utility of CRP measurements for monitoring and tr

Elevated serum C-reactive protein in mumps orchitis.

A case of mumps orchitis with a high concentration of C-reactive protein (CRP) prompted us to evaluate the inflammatory response in mumps complications. We compared the CRP titers in mumps patients with orchitis and meningitis. The serum CRP titers were significantly higher in the patients with orchitis than in those with meningitis.

C-reactive protein in the diagnosis of melioidosis.

Previous work suggested that C-reactive protein (CRP) may be a useful test in the diagnosis of melioidosis, the infection caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei. We reviewed patients with culture-confirmed melioidosis to define the role of this inflammatory marker in the diagnosis of melioidosis. In 175 patients, we found that the admission CRP level may be normal or only mildly elevated, including patients with severe sepsis, fatal cases, and in relapsed melioidosis. In a multivariate analysis, sepsis and bacteremia were more strongly associated with mortality than CRP. Admission levels of CRP a

Association between depression and elevated C-reactive protein.

OBJECTIVE: Depression has been related to a higher risk of developing coronary heart disease, but the mechanism that accounts for this association is unclear. Because atherosclerosis is an inflammatory process, depression could increase the risk of coronary heart disease by inducing or promoting inflammation. The objective of the present study was to investigate the association between history of major depressive episode and presence of low-grade systemic inflammation as measured by serum C-reactive protein (CRP). METHODS: We analyzed data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examinat

Serum C-reactive protein measurement in pyoderma gangrenosum.

A case of pyoderma gangrenosum is reported in a patient with a past history of ulcerative colitis. Serial C-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations were measured and were found to be markedly elevated at presentation. Levels were also raised during two subsequent relapses. CRP levels proved to be a useful objective indicator of disease activity and response to therapy, and reflected changes in disease activity before the erythrocyte sedimentation rate.

1059G/C polymorphism within the exon 2 of the C-reactive protein gene: relationship to C-reactive protein levels and prognosis in unstable angina.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with unstable angina (UA) and high C-reactive protein (CRP) have increased cardiovascular risk. Whether genetic factors such as the synonymous 1059G/C polymorphism within the exon 2 of the human CRP gene determine CRP levels and outcome is unclear. METHODS: In 105 consecutive patients with UA, we assessed the CRP 1059G/C polymorphism, CRP plasma levels and interleukin-6 production after in-vitro stimulation of whole blood with lipopolysaccharide (1 ng/ml). Coronary events during a 24-month follow-up were recorded. RESULTS: CRP levels (median, range) were significantly low

[CD14 (C-159-->T) polymorphism and levels of C-reactive protein].

BACKGROUND: High plasma levels of C-reactive protein (involved in unspecific host defence) have been described as independent risk factor of atherosclerosis. The possible association has been analysed between the CD14C-159-->T polymorphism and plasma level of CRP. METHODS AND RESULTS: With the PCR and subsequent restriction analysis we have evaluated C-159-->T polymorphism in the CD14 gene of 166 representatively selected male Caucasians with known plasma level of CRP. The CRP was measured immunologically. A significantly higher (p < 0.01) frequency of the CD14-159TT homozygotes between the i

Elevated high sensitive C-reactive protein in fibromyalgia.

INTRODUCTION: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a complex chronic pain condition characterized by widespread pain and tenderness, fatigue, and sleep disturbances. Currently, factors contributing to FMS are considered to be multifactorial, and the involvement of inflammatory processes is a question of debate. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were (1) to assess whether serum concentrations of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) differ between individuals diagnosed with FMS and pain-free controls, (2) to determine whether these differences are associated with clinical symptoms, and (3) to

C-reactive protein and post-stroke depressive symptoms.

Our study aimed to explore the association between serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and post-stroke depressive symptoms. We prospectively recruited 572 patients with ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack in whom serum CRP level was measured within 48 h after stroke onset. Depressive symptoms were assessed at day 8 and 3 months after stroke in 405 and 306 patients, respectively. Patients with greater depressive symptoms at day 8 and patients with greater depressive symptoms 3 months after stroke had higher CRP level (median: 7.9 vs 4.3 mg/L, P < 0.01 and 6.7 vs 3.4 mg/L, P = 0.01, respecti

C-reactive protein in traditional melanesians on Kitava.

BACKGROUND: Population-based levels of the chronic low-grade systemic inflammation biomarker, C-reactive protein (CRP), vary widely among traditional populations, despite their apparent absence of chronic conditions associated with chronic low-grade systemic inflammation, such as type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. We have previously reported an apparent absence of aforementioned conditions amongst the traditional Melanesian horticulturalists of Kitava, Trobriand Islands, Papua New Guinea. Our objective in this study was to clarify associations between chronic low-g

C-reactive protein, platelets, and patent ductus arteriosus.

The association between inflammation, platelets, and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) has not been studied so far. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether C-reactive protein (CRP) is related to low platelet count and PDA. This was a retrospective study of 88 infants with a birth weight ≤1500 g and a gestational age ≤30 weeks. Platelet count, CRP, and an echocardiogram were assessed in all infants. The subjects were matched by sex, gestational age, and birth weight. Differences were compared using the χ2, t-test, or Mann-Whitney U-test, as appropriate. Significant variables were entered

C-reactive protein, fibrinogen, and cardiovascular disease prediction.

BACKGROUND: There is debate about the value of assessing levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and other biomarkers of inflammation for the prediction of first cardiovascular events. METHODS: We analyzed data from 52 prospective studies that included 246,669 participants without a history of cardiovascular disease to investigate the value of adding CRP or fibrinogen levels to conventional risk factors for the prediction of cardiovascular risk. We calculated measures of discrimination and reclassification during follow-up and modeled the clinical implications of initiation of statin therapy after

[High-affinity C-reactive protein as inflammatory marker].

ANTECEDENTS: Non-immunological and immunological diseases have been reported to present a level of serum C-reactive protein (CRP) higher than the base level. For both, this level can guide the diagnosis and prognosis. OBJECTIVE: To test the value of serum CRP, by a high-sensitivity CRP assay, during a non-immunological disease, in order to understand if this level is significant during the non-immunological diseases. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this study, 50 patients were divided in two groups according to different specific illness: 25 patients with unstable angina (UA) and 25 with acute myoc

C-reactive protein in atherosclerosis: A causal factor?

Atherosclerosis is considered a to be multifactorial disease driven by inflammatory reactions. The process of inflammation also contributes to the pathogenesis of acute atherothrombotic events. C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute phase protein and its concentration in serum reflects the inflammatory condition of the patient. Levels of CRP are consistently associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and predict myocardial infarctions and stroke. Since CRP is present in the atherosclerotic lesion, it may actively contribute to the progression and/or instability of the atherosclerotic plaque. T

C-reactive protein in hypertensive disorders in pregnancy.

Hypertension is the most frequent medical complication of pregnancy. A recent report demonstrates the flogistic pathogenesis of pregnancy-induced hypertension. Because C-reactive protein (CRP) is a marker of inflammation, it can be used in the differential diagnosis of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. A total of 322 pregnant women at 24 to 32 weeks' gestation were enrolled. The control group (A) comprised 190 women. Sixty-three women had preeclampsia (PE, group B), 31 women presented transient hypertension (TH, group C), 19 had HELLP syndrome (HS, group D) and 19 had chronic hypertension (
