COVID-19-Related Collapsing Glomerulopathy and Thrombotic Microangiopathy in Kidney Transplant Recipients: A Case Report and Literature Review.

We present a case of collapsing glomerulopathy (CG) and thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) associated with COVID-19 in an Asian kidney transplant recipient who does not have the APOL1 gene variant, and we conduct a literature review. The patient presented with progressive renal function decline following a negative COVID-19 nucleic acid test, accompanied by TMA manifestations such as thrombocytopenia and peripheral blood schistocytes. The renal biopsy conducted after plasma exchange revealed collapsing focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, along with acute tubulointerstitial nephritis and minor mi

Assessment of the Diagnostic Ability of Four Detection Methods Using Three Sample Types of COVID-19 Patients.

BACKGROUND: Viral nucleic acid detection is considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, unsuitable sample types and laboratory detection kits/methods lead to misdiagnosis, which delays the prevention and control of the pandemic. METHODS: We compared four nucleic acid detection methods [two kinds of reverse transcription polymerase chain reactions (RT-PCR A: ORF1ab and N testing; RT-PCRB: only ORF1ab testing), reverse transcription recombinase aided amplification (RT-RAA) and droplet digital RT-PCR (dd

An uncommon manifestation of COVID-19 pneumonia on CT scan with small cavities in the lungs: A case report.

RATIONALE: Chest computed tomography (CT) scans play a key role in diagnosing and managing of COVID-19 pneumonia. The typical manifestations of COVID-19 pneumonia on a chest CT scan are ground glass opacities, consolidation, nodules, and linear opacities. It can be accompanied by a "crazy-paving" pattern, air bronchograms, pleural hypertrophy, and pleural effusion. However, no literature has reported a case with cavities in the lungs. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 34-year-old male patient complained of fever, cough, fatigue, myalgia, diarrhea, headache, and dizziness for 2 weeks. This patient is living

Persistence of SARS-CoV-2 nasopharyngeal swab PCR positivity in COVID-19 convalescent plasma donors.

BACKGROUND: Nucleic acid persists after symptom resolution and infectivity for many viral infections via delayed clearance of nucleic acid fragments, non-infectious particles, or transmissible virus. For Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), the relationship between nasopharyngeal (NP) swab positivity, the development of antibodies against COVID-19, and clinical history are unclear. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Individuals who recovered from COVID-19 and volunteered to donate convalescent plasma (CP) were screened by NP swab PCR, responded to a questionnaire, and were tested for anti-COVID-19 ant

Development of a qualitative real-time RT-PCR assay for the detection of SARS-CoV-2: A guide and case study in setting up an emergency-use, laboratory-developed molecular assay.

Developing and deploying new diagnostic tests is difficult, but the need to do so in response to a rapidly emerging pandemic such as COVID-19 is crucially important for an effective response. In the early stages of a pandemic, laboratories play a key role in helping health care providers and public health authorities detect active infection, a task most commonly achieved using nucleic acid-based assays. While the landscape of diagnostics is rapidly evolving, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) remains the gold-standard of nucleic acid-based diagnostic assays, in part due to its reliability, flexib

A pregnant woman with COVID-19 gives birth to premature triplets: A case report and literature review.

To the best of our knowledge, no case report has been published to date concerning the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) treatment plan for pregnant women with triplets, as well as on the possibility of a vertical transmission to triplets delivered prematurely by a pregnant woman with COVID-19. The present study thus describes such as case. A 29-year-old local resident, a woman with COVID-19, who was pregnant with triplets, had not moved from her residence for the past 6 months. Recent developments in isothermal amplification technology for rapid detection of SARS-CoV-2.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has spread globally, posing a significant threat to human health. Rapid and accurate detection of infectious disease pathogens is of crucial practical significance for early screening, timely intervention, and outbreak prevention. However, conventional diagnostic methods are increasingly unable to meet clinical demands. Recently developed isothermal analysis methods offer mild reaction conditions and reduce dependence on specialized instruments. These convenient, f

Up-to-date nucleic acid assays for diagnosing respiratory infection.

Nucleic acid assays have been widely used as rapid tests for diagnosing respiratory infections during and after the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. An ideal point-of-care diagnostic must be affordable, sensitive, specific, user-friendly, rapid/robust, equipment-free and deliverable (ASSURED), and in addition to improvements to conventional methods based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR), point-of-care testing aiming for "REASSURED" are emerging through integration with microfluidic technology. Compared to conventional immunoassays, nucleic acid assays, especially rapid nucleic a

Research on safety strategies for nucleic acid testing in sudden epidemic conditions based on a SEIARD dynamic model.

Infectious diseases have caused enormous disasters in human society, and asymptomatic carriers are an important challenge in our epidemic prevention and control process. Nucleic acid testing has played an important role in rapid testing for asymptomatic individuals. How to carry out nucleic acid testing in a scientific manner is a practical problem encountered in normal production and life. Based on the real COVID-19 epidemic data from Shanghai, we established a susceptible-exposed-infected-asymptomatic-recovered-death (SEIARD) dynamic model. The least squares method was used to fit the data a

Efficacy of Nirmatrelvir-Ritonavir versus Azvudine for COVID-19 Treatment in Tibet: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Nirmatrelvir-ritonavir, also known as paxlovid, is a widely used antiviral drug against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Azvudine, a drug previously used to treat human immunodeficiency virus-1, has also been used to treat COVID-19 in China. However, only a few clinical studies have evaluated the effects of azvudine. Additionally, studies comparing nirmatrelvir-ritonavir with azvudine have been limited in number.
