Levels of Organic Compounds, Number of Microorganisms and Cadmium Accumulation in Festuca ovina Hydroponic Culture.

Understanding the microbiological, biochemical and physiological aspects of phytoremediation of soil and water environments polluted to different degrees with heavy metals has very important theoretical and practical implications. In this study, a comparison was made between total cadmium concentration in root and shoot tissues as well as concentrations of particular fractions of Cd immobilized by roots of Festuca ovina (Sheep's fescue) hydroponically cultivated in nutrient solutions supplemented with 1 μg Cd ml-1 and those cultivated at 10 μg Cd ml-1. After three weeks of F. ovina cultivation

Atomization of cadmium compounds under reactive and inert high-temperature environment with stationary sample introduction.

Atomization of cadmium compounds (acetate, chloride, nitrate, perchlorate, sulfate, formate, propionate) was studied using flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Our goal was to study processes influencing atomization separately, the focus was on the contribution of thermal properties of substances to atomization. For this purpose new techniques and equipment have been developed, such as a special separated three-slot burner, quartz flame furnace, and an electrically heated thermospectrometer. According to quartz flame furnace and thermospectrometric measurements, cadmium salts do not atomize b

[Measuring the Spectrum of Extinction Coefficient and Reflectance for Cadmium Compounds from 400 to 900 nm].

The key to extract the contents of cadmium in water by using remote sensing technique is to measure the spectrum of extinction coefficient per g·L(-1) and reflectance for its compounds. So in this paper, firstly, we choose two kinds of cadmium compounds, cadmium sulfide (CdS) and cadmium oxide (CdO), which are most commonly exsit in natural water, to measure the spectrums of extinction coefficient and reflectance for them. We use the equipment, designed on our own, which can adjust the path length of light passing and make our measuring results more accurate at visible and near-infrared wavele

[Mechanism Study of the Smectite-OR-SH Compound for Reducing Cadmium Uptake by Plants in Contaminated Soils].

Adsorption and desorption experiments, pot experiments and characterization test were performed to investigate the immobilization effect and mechanism of the smectite-OR-SH compound for reducing cadmium uptake by plants in contaminated soils. The results showed that the saturated adsorption capacity for the adsorption of Cd2+ on smectite raised distinctly after functionalized. The adsorption of Cd2+ on smectite-OR-SH compound was very stable and it was difficult for Cd2+ to be desorbed from it. Crop yields promoted differently in original soil, Cd 3 mg x kg(-1) soil and Cd 10 mg x kg(-1) soil

A plant-derived compound activating agent enhances cadmium phytoextraction by Lantana Camara L.

Agent-assisted phytoextraction is an attractive strategy to remove heavy metals from soil. However, there is a lack of effective and sustainable agents. In this study, 10 types of plant extracts were extracted and selected to combined with N, N-bis (carboxymethyl) glutamic acid (GLDA) to prepare the compound activating agent, and its effectiveness and potential risk in enhancing Cd phytoextraction by Lantana camara L. (L. camara) were evaluated. Among the 10 plant extracts, Houttuynia cordata Thunb. extract (HC) showed the highest Cd extraction ability (24.58%). When combined with GLDA (0.9%)

Cadmium, lead, and zinc immobilization in the soil using a phosphate compound with citric acid present.

Low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) are common in rhizospheric soil and may impede the interaction between phosphate and metals. Thus, studying how phosphate compounds impact metal immobilization in rhizospheric soil using LMWOAs is crucial. An incubation experiment examined the effects of NaH2PO4 (a P compound) (3%), various concentrations of citric acid (CA), and combinations of P and CA, on soil cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) immobilization using the European Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) sequential extraction method, CaCl2 extraction method, zeta potential, fourier-tr

Genotoxicity of soluble and particulate cadmium compounds: impact on oxidative DNA damage and nucleotide excision repair.

Water-soluble and particulate cadmium compounds are carcinogenic to humans. While direct interactions with DNA are unlikely to account for carcinogenicity, induction of oxidative DNA damage and interference with DNA repair processes might be more relevant underlying modes of action (recently summarized, for example, in Joseph , P. (2009) Tox. Appl. Pharmacol. 238 , 271 - 279). The present study aimed to compare genotoxic effects of particulate CdO and soluble CdCl(2) in cultured human cells (A549, VH10hTert). Both cadmium compounds increased the baseline level of oxidative DNA damage. Even mor

Human biomonitoring initiative (HBM4EU): Human biomonitoring guidance values (HBM-GVs) derived for cadmium and its compounds.

AIMS: The methodology agreed within the framework of the HBM4EU project is used in this work to derive HBM-GVs for the general population (HBM-GVGenPop) and for workers (HBM-GVWorker) exposed to cadmium (Cd) and its compounds. METHODS: For Cd, a significant number of epidemiological studies with dose-response relationships are available, in particular for kidney effects. These effects are described in terms of a relation between urinary Cd (U-Cd) or blood Cd (B-Cd) levels and low molecular weight proteinuria (LMWP) markers like beta-2-microglobulin (β2M) and retinol-binding protein (RBP). Electrochemical and spectroscopic detection of self-association of octa-alkyl phthalocyaninato cadmium compounds into dimeric species.

The solution phase behaviour of non-peripherally substituted octa-hexyl cadmium phthalocyanine 3 and peripherally substituted octa-2-ethylhexyl cadmium phthalocyanine has been investigated in fresh solutions of CH(2)Cl(2), CHCl(3)-d(1) and THF/THF-d(8) using (1)H NMR spectrometry, UV-Vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, square wave voltammetry and linear sweep voltammetry. The compounds show an unexpected propensity to form dimeric species in CH(2)Cl(2) and CHCl(3)-d(1), and, in the case of , also to a lesser extent in THF/THF-d(8). This phenomenon is not observed for their metal-free analogu

Perfluoroalkyl compounds in groundwater alter the spatial pattern of health risk in an arsenic‑cadmium contaminated region.

Integrated health risk assessment strategies for emerging organic pollutants and heavy metals that coexist in water/soil media are lacking. Contents of perfluoroalkyl compounds and potentially toxic elements in multiple media were determined by investigating a county where a landfill and a tungsten mine coexist. The spatial characteristics and sources of contaminants were predicted by Geostatistics-based and multivariate statistical analysis, and their comprehensive health risks were assessed. The average contents of perfluorooctane acid, perfluorooctanesulfonic acid, arsenic, and cadmium in g

Phenolic compounds responding to zinc and/or cadmium treatments in Gynura pseudochina (L.) DC. extracts and biomass.

Gynura pseudochina (L.) DC. is a Zn/Cd hyperaccumulative plant. In an in vivo system under controlled plant age, this research reveals that phenolic compounds and lignification play beneficial roles in protecting G. pseudochina from exposure to an excess of Zn and/or Cd, and Zn reduces Cd toxicity under the dual treatments. The total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values correspond to the metal dose-response curves. Toxicity testing of heavy metals with the Rhizobium-legume symbiosis: High sensitivity to cadmium and arsenic compounds.

Legume root nodules are the site of biological nitrogen fixation in the Rhizobium-legume symbiosis. Nodules are structures unique to this symbiosis and they are morphologically as well as physiologically distinct from other plant organs. Organic substances affecting the macro- or microsymbionts vitality, such as PAHs (WETZEL: et al., 1991), reduce nodulation even before visible damage to the plant can be detected. We present data that the formation of nodules (nodulation) may also serve for ecotoxicological evaluation of heavy metals in different binding states. Tests were performed in petri d

Simple Cadmium Sulfide Compound with Stable 95 % Selectivity for Carbon Dioxide Electroreduction in Aqueous Medium.

A simple cadmium sulfide nanomaterial is found to be an efficient and stable electrocatalyst for CO2 reduction in aqueous medium for more than 40 h with a steady CO faradaic efficiency of approximately 95 %. Moreover, it can realize a current density of -10 mA cm-2 at an overpotential of -0.55 V on a porous substrate with similar selectivity. Theoretical and experimental results confirm that the high selectivity for CO2 reduction is due to its (0 0 0 2) face with sulfur vacancies that prefers CO2 molecule reduction in aqueous medium.
