BACKGROUND: Cadmium is a metal used in the zinc, copper and steel industries, and in the manufacture of electric batteries and solar cells. Acute cadmium poisoning is characterized by irritation of the respiratory tract, while in chronic poisoning the main target organ is the renal tubule.
AIMS: We report a patient with chronic work overexposure to cadmium, who presented a IgA mesangial glomerulonephritis with no respiratory or renal tubule involvement. Case report A 39-year-old patient was referred to our hospital for evaluation of a glomerular nephropathy. For the past 12 years he had worke

In a previous study a simple algorithm was presented for effect assessment on secondary poisoning of birds and mammals. This algorithm (MPC = NOECfish-eater/BCFfish) was drawn up by analyzing a two-step aquatic food chain (water-fish-bird/mammal). The algorithm was used to test whether quality criteria set for surface water, based on effect assessment for aquatic organisms, constitute a "safe" level for secondary poisoning. The present study analyzes whether this algorithm can equally well be used for effect assessment in a terrestrial food chain. The pathway soil-earthworm-bird/mammal was use

Succimer lowers blood lead concentrations in children, and the structure of succimer chelates of lead and cadmium are similar. Using blood samples from a randomized trial of succimer for lead poisoning, however, we found that succimer did not lower blood cadmium in children with background exposure.

A review of the health effects of cadmium is presented. Overexposure to cadmium produces numerous acute and chronic effects. Cases of acute poisoning resemble metal-fume poisoning. The first and most distinctive indication of chronic effects is renal tubular dysfunction characterized by proteinuria. Other chronic effects include liver damage, emphysema, osteomalacia, neurological impairment, testicular, pancreatic, and adrenal damage, and anemia. Tumorigenic effects have been observed in animals, and excessive prostatic and lung cancer has been observed in worker studies. In vitro and in vivo

Effect assessment on secondary poisoning can be an asset to effect assessments on direct poisoning in setting quality criteria for the environment. This study presents an algorithm for effect assessment on secondary poisoning. The water-fish-fish-eating bird or mammal pathway was analyzed as an example of a secondary poisoning pathway. Parameters used in this algorithm are the bioconcentration factor for fish (BCF) and the no-observed-effect concentration for the group of fish-eating birds and mammals (NOECfish-eater). For the derivation of reliable BCFs preference is given to the use of exper

The influence of thiamine on the efficacy of meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), diethyldimercapto succinate (DEDMS), alpha mercapto-beta-(2-furyl) acrylic acid (MFA) and alpha-mercapto-beta-(2-thienyl) acrylic acid (MTA) to mobilize cadmium and reverse cadmium-induced biochemical alterations was investigated in cadmium-exposed rats. The thiamine coadministration enhanced the efficacy of MFA and MTA in reducing hepatic and renal burden of cadmium and that of DMSA and DEDMS in mobilizing hepatic cadmium. It also improved the efficacy of DMSA, DEDMS and MFA in reversing the cadmium-induced

A general algorithm for effect assessment on secondary poisoning for birds and mammals is presented. This algorithm (Maximum Permissible Concentration = NOECbird/mammal/BCF) was drawn up by analysing an aquatic food chain (water--fish--bird or mammal) and a terrestrial food chain (soil--worm--bird or mammal). NOECs and bioconcentration factors (BCFs) were collected for a set of selected compounds: lindane, dieldrin, cadmium and mercury in both water and soil, PCB153 only in water and DDT and PCP only in soil. BCFs for the terrestrial pathway are frequently < 1 and rarely above 10, though for t

Studies in the 1970s on chronic cadmium poisoning in man in Belgium showed that the earliest effect was renal dysfunction with proteinuria. Subsequent studies were focused on the characterization of cadmium proteinuria, the diagnosis and prognosis of cadmium nephropathy and the assessment of the concentrations in urine and renal cortex leading to its occurrence. Chronic exposure to cadmium in industry gives rise to a proteinuria which may be tubular, glomerular or mixed in character. This proteinuria may be accompanied or preceded by a variety of other renal effects. In active male workers, th

The early diagnosis of lead poisoning -- the most common type of occupational metal poisoning -- based on the determination of the haemprecursors coproporphyrin, delta amino laevulinic acid and free erythrocyte protoporphyrin. Treatment with chelating agents increases urinary lead excretion very effectively. Clinical manifestations of mercury poisoning are different with organic and inorganic mercury compounds. Cadmium poisoning results in inhibition of non-specific enzymes. Depending on the mode of exposure, alteration of the epithelium of the renal tubules or skeletal damage is seen. The tox

Cadmium has been well recognized as a critical toxic agent in acute and chronic poisoning cases in occupational and nonoccupational settings and environmental exposure situations. Cadmium is released into the environment after natural and anthropogenic activities, particularly in contaminated and industrial areas, causing food pollution. In the body, cadmium has no biological activity, but it accumulates primarily in the liver and kidney, which are considered the main targets of its toxicity, through oxidative stress and inflammation. However, in the last few years, this metal has been linked

BACKGROUND: Occupational exposure to welding fumes has been associated with several diseases including metal fume fever, lung cancer, welder's pneumoconiosis and manganism. However, there are few reports on cadmium-induced renal tubular dysfunction in welders.
AIMS: To evaluate the body burden of cadmium and cadmium-induced proteinuria in a group of Chinese welders.
METHODS: Cadmium concentrations in the breathing zone and in urine were measured by atomic absorption spectrometry. β(2)-microglobulin (β(2)-MG) in urine as a marker of renal tubular function was measured using an ELISA kit. All

Age peculiarities of cadmium cumulation in the organs of rats under different conditions of antioxidants administration. Considerable hepato- and nefrotoxic effect of the given xenobiotic under different conditions of its supply into the organism was revealed. The strongly pronounced differences between the age distribution of cadmium in the organisms have been marked. It is proved that the most antioxidantal activity is shown by sodium selenite when administered into the organism before poisoning with cadmium. It is stated that the indices showing the acid-alkaline state are subject to the gr

In rats injected with 5 micron mole CdCl2/kg, 5 days/week, metallothionein was detected in plasma by gel filtration chromatography as early as four weeks. The mean renal concentration of cadmium was 80 microgram/g. The excretion of cadmium in urine at this time was rather low and amounted to 0.01% of the total dose. The amount of metallothionein in plasma, as determined by 109Cd-binding to the 10,000 molecular weight fraction, increased markedly during week 14. Its excretion in urine, however, did not start until about 10 weeks, when the cadmium concentration in kidney approached a mean value

Since there are a plethora of studies on cadmium toxicity and poisoning in laboratory animals and humans, we have limited this review to studies that are relevant to human health issues by focusing on carcinogenicity, genotoxicity, circulatory disease, nephrotoxicity and life expectancy. Cadmium exposure has been established to induce cancer in various tissues of laboratory animals. Contrary to early findings of the lack of genotoxicity by cadmium, recent findings of mammalian cell culture studies have revealed genotoxic effects. Furthermore, cadmium exposure at relatively low doses induces ci

The functioning of metallothioneins in the liver of rats, poisoned with copper sulfate and cadmium sulfate has been investigated. By sequential chromatography on sephadex G-50 and DEAE-cellulose the authors obtained metallothioneins (MT-1, MT-1A, MT-2, MT-2a), which differ in molecular weight and composition of associated metals. Heavy metal poisoning leads to activation of synthesis and metal-binding function of metallothioneins, as well as to changes in the composition of their isoforms.

Poisoning resulting from exposure to a wide variety of industrial chemicals is not a common occurrence in horses, but it does happen on occasion. A wide range of toxicosis can occur from a wide range of industrial pollutants, such as dioxin, carbon tetrachloride, and tetrachloroethylene, to heavy metals, such as cadmium and zinc. The equine practitioner must consider industrial chemical toxicosis in differential diagnoses and work with a reputable veterinary diagnostic laboratory to confirm or rule out industrial chemical poisoning.

Cadmium (Cd(2+)) is a highly toxic and carcinogenic metal that is an environmental and occupational hazard. DNA topoisomerase II is an essential nuclear enzyme and its inhibition can result in the formation of genotoxic and recombinogenic DNA double strand breaks. In this study we showed that cadmium chloride strongly inhibited the DNA decatenation activity of human topoisomerase IIα in the low micromolar concentration range and that its inhibitory effects were reduced by glutathione. Because the activity of topoisomerase II is strongly inhibited by thiol-reactive compounds this result suggest

Cadmium is a heavy metal and a non-biodegradable environmental contaminant, and its omnipresence ensures its recurrent exposure to humans and animals. Its intake by chicks leads to fatal implications. Cadmium chloride (CdCl2) because of its bio-accumulative nature is an emerging threat to the poultry industry as well as to the humans which consumes these cadmium-intoxicated chickens. In the current study, the target was to elucidate the toxic effects of CdCl2on body weight, hematological, and biochemical parameters as well as its bioaccumulation in different organs of broiler chicks. Various c

Kidney samples of 224 roe deer (113 males, 111 females) aged three months to approximately nine years were collected in eastern Austria. Cadmium contents were examined and histological examinations were performed considering 11 different pathomorphological parameters. Cadmium burden was relatively high (range: 0.010-22.076 ppm) and increased with age. Females aged one to two years had higher contents than males of the same age. The culling site had no influence on cadmium load. The relation between the occurrence of histopathological changes and age, sex, origin, and cadmium concentration in 2
