Effects and mechanism of Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) leaves on proliferation, migration, and tube formation of hypoxic human umbilical vein endothelial cells in vitro.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp) leaves (PL) are widely used for treating avascular necrosis of the femoral head. PL has an ideal effect on bone angiogenesis in patients with hormone-induced avascular necrosis of the femoral head and could promote the repair of blood vessels in the necrotic femoral head. Angiogenesis is beneficial to the treatment of myocardial ischemia. PL can be used to treat ischemic heart disease; however, no studies have examined whether it could protect the myocardium against ischemia injury via promoting angiogenesis. AIM: The prese

True ileal amino acid digestibility and digestible indispensable amino acid scores (DIAASs) of cooked tropical peas.

Tropical peas can be used as both animal feed and human food but the nutritional quality of their proteins for humans is currently poorly documented. Here, 3 varieties of tropical peas were studied at two stages of seed maturity (green or dry): Cajanus Cajan (CC), Vigna Unguiculata (VU) and Lablab Purpureus (LP). Pea seeds were prepared traditionally (soaking and cooking). The true ileal digestibility (TID) of their amino acids was measured in minipigs, and the digestible indispensable amino acid score (DIAAS) was calculated. Total amino acid TID was not significantly different between pea var

Field screening and evaluation of pigeonpea genotypes against podborer (Helicoverpa armigera).

Hence an experiment was conducted to screen fifteen germplasm lines for their resistance/tolerance to podborer under natural infestation in pesticide-free open field. To asses the degree of infestation 250 green pods were randomly picked up from all the plants of each plot. The pods damaged by gram podborer were detected by the presence large bored holes in pods. Such infested and healthy pods were counted separately. The pod damage (%) was calculated on the basis of number of pods examined and the number of infested pods. Marketable green pod yield of each genotype under natural pest infestat

A protocol for high-quality genomic DNA extraction from legumes.

Current DNA extraction protocols, which require liquid nitrogen, lyophilization and considerable infrastructure in terms of instrumentation, often impede the application of biotechnological tools in less researched crops in laboratories in developing countries. We modified and optimized the existing CTAB method for plant genomic DNA extraction by avoiding liquid nitrogen usage and lyophilization. DNA was extracted directly from freshly harvested leaves ground in pre-heated CTAB buffer. Chloroform:isoamyl alcohol (24:1) and RNase treatments followed by single-purification step decontaminated th

Infectivity of entomopathogenic nematodes against the legume pod-borer, Maruca vitrata Fabricius, infesting pigeon pea.

The legume pod-borer, Maruca vitrata Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) (LPB), is an important insect pest of pigeon pea. Chemical pesticides are generally employed to manage this pest, but because of the soil residue issues and other environmental hazards associated with their use, biopesticides are also in demand. Another benign alternative is to use entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) to manage this vital pest. In the present study, the infectivity of ten native EPNs was evaluated against LPB by assessing their penetration and production in the LPB. The effectiveness of the promising EPNs aga

Efficient Production of Health-Beneficial Cajaninstilbene Acid in an In Situ Fermentation System Composed of Endophytic Fungus Penicillium polonicum R-461 and Agricultural Byproduct Pigeon Pea Roots.

Cajaninstilbene acid (CSA), an important stilbene compound primarily found in pigeon pea leaves, exhibits notable health-beneficial properties. This study developed an in situ fermentation system composed of the endophytic fungus Penicillium polonicum (P. polonicum) R-461 and pigeon pea roots (PPRs) to enhance CSA production. Under the optimal conditions, P. polonicum R-461 efficiently converted the CSA precursors/intermediates in PPRs, achieving a 126.3-fold increase in CSA yield (37,406.51 μg/g of DW) compared to untreated PPRs (296.21 μg/g of DW). The fungus could utilize the nutrients from

The Dietary Use of Pigeon Pea for Human and Animal Diets.

Pigeon pea (PP) [Cajanus cajan (L.) Huth] plays an important role in preserving poor smallholders' major source of income in the tropics and subtropics by improving food and feed security, particularly protein intake. In the meantime, protein deficiency is frequent in tropical and subtropical regions due to rapidly increasing human populations and the high cost of animal-origin proteins. As a result, pulse crops should be their primary source of protein. Among these, PP is the most important pulse crop utilized as a food component in rain-fed agricultural conditions with the lowest costs, and

Green solvent extraction of health boosting phenolics from pigeon pea husk.

The optimization of phenolic compound extraction from pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan L.) husk was explored by manipulating three key process variables: aqueous ethanol concentration (20-60% v/v), extraction temperature (30-60 °C), and extraction time (2-6 h). Utilizing a Box-Behnken design under Response Surface Methodology (RSM), we meticulously optimized these variables to maximize extract yield, total phenolic content, and DPPH radical scavenging activity. The ideal extraction conditions determined via desirability function analysis were found to be 41.83% (v/v) ethanol concentration, 59.36 °C e

Differential effects of cooking in open cups and in sealed cellophane bags on the residual cyanide content of moi-moi, a processed legume product.

Bean pastes from the black eyed bean (Vigna unguiculata), pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) and Ife brown (V. unguiculata) were processed into a popular West African snack moi-moi, cooked in open aluminium cups and in sealed, thin, transparent cellophane bags. The residual total, free and bound cyanide levels of moi-moi from both processes were determined using a combination of enzymatic and colorimetric procedures. Results showed that in all cases, cooking of moi-moi in open aluminium cups caused retention of significantly higher (P<0.05) residual free cyanide than cooking in sealed cellophane bags.
