Calcium carbonate polymorphs enhance coagulation in citrated blood via platelet concentration and calcium release.

Citrate, widely used as an anticoagulant in transfusion and extracorporeal therapies, disrupts calcium-dependent coagulation by chelating ionized calcium, resulting in hypocalcemia and severe coagulopathy. This interference elevates bleeding risks and may trigger hemorrhagic shock. Current treatments for local bleedings in the context of citrate-induced coagulopathy include topical hemostats that either provide a physical barrier to the bleeding or activate platelets and the coagulation cascade. This study investigates the potential of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) to counteract the citrate coagul

Calcium acetate versus calcium carbonate for the control of serum phosphorus in hemodialysis patients.

Recent in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that calcium acetate (CaAC) is a more effective phosphorus binder than, among other calcium salts, calcium carbonate (CaCO3). More efficient binding allows serum phosphorus to be controlled with a lower dose; moreover, less calcium seems to be absorbed when CaAC is used. These properties could reduce the incidence of hypercalcemia; however, in clinical practice few reports have compared these two calcium salts, and results disagree. We evaluated in a 24-week prospective cross-over study the clinical efficiency of CaCO3 and CaAC in 10 selected chro

Surface-reacted calcium carbonate microparticles as templates for lactoferrin encapsulation.

Microencapsulation helps to improve bioavailability of a functional whey protein, lactoferrin (Lf), in adults. Herein, we report the Lf loading capacity (LC) and retention efficiency (RE) in the microparticles of surface-reacted calcium carbonate (SRCC) of different types and compare them to those of widely used vaterite microparticles. The LCs and REs are analyzed in connection to the total surface area and the volume of intraparticle pores. The best performing SRCC3 demonstrates Lf LC of 11.00 wt% achieved in a single absorption step and 74% RE after two cycles of washing with deionized wate

Calcium carbonate concretions formed by the decomposition of organic matter.

Bacterial decomposition of butterfish and smelts in small sealed jars containing seawater and other solutions, for periods ranging from 65 to 205 days, results in a large increase in concentrations of dissolved bicarbonate, carbonate, and ammonia (plus volatile amines). Accompanying this is a rise in pH and the precipitation of Ca(++) ion from solution. The Ca(++) is not precipitated as CaCO(3) but instead as a mixture of calcium fatty acid salts or soaps with from 14 to 18 carbon atoms. This can be explained by the thermodynamic instability of CaCO(3) relative to Ca soaps in the presence of e

Calcium absorption from calcium carbonate and a new form of calcium (CCM) in healthy male and female adolescents.

Calcium absorption from two Ca salts was investigated in a crossover design using stable isotopic tracers in 12 healthy adolescents (6 males, 6 females). A Ca supplement in the form of Ca carbonate or Ca citric and malic acids (CCM) was ingested with a standardized breakfast and the order of administration was randomized. The oral supplement contained 250 mg elemental Ca, 21.8 mg of which was highly enriched 44Ca tracer. Thirty minutes later subjects received 3.6 mg 42Ca tracer intravenously. The molar concentrations of 42Ca and 44Ca tracers in a urine sample obtained 24 h after tracer adminis

Hypoparathyroidism: what is the best calcium carbonate supplementation intake form?

INTRODUCTION: In hypoparathyroidism, calcium supplementation using calcium carbonate is necessary for the hypocalcemia control. The best calcium carbonate intake form is unknown, be it associated with feeding, juice or in fasting. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to evaluate the calcium, phosphorus and calcium×phosphorus product serum levels of hypoparathyroidism women after total thyroidectomy, following calcium carbonate intake in three different forms. METHODS: A crossover study was carried out with patients presenting definitive hypoparathyroidism, assessed in different situations (fasting,

Onsite defluoridation system for drinking water treatment using calcium carbonate.

Fluoride in drinking water has several effects on teeth and bones. At concentrations of 1-1.5 mg/L, fluoride can strengthen enamel, improving dental health, but at concentrations above 1.5 to 4 mg/L can cause dental fluorosis. At concentrations of 4-10 mg/L, skeletal fluorosis can occur. There are many areas of the world that have excessive fluoride in drinking water, such as China, India, Sri Lanka, and the Rift Valley countries in Africa. Treatment solutions are needed, especially in poor areas where drinking water treatment plants are not available. On-site or individual treatment alternati

Drug loading into porous calcium carbonate microparticles by solvent evaporation.

Drug loading into porous carriers may improve drug release of poorly water-soluble drugs. However, the widely used impregnation method based on adsorption lacks reproducibility and efficiency for certain compounds. The aim of this study was to evaluate a drug-loading method based on solvent evaporation and crystallization, and to investigate the underlying drug-loading mechanisms. Functionalized calcium carbonate (FCC) microparticles and four drugs with different solubility and permeability properties were selected as model substances to investigate drug loading. Ibuprofen, nifedipine, losarta

Clonorcis sinensis eggs are associated with calcium carbonate gallbladder stones.

Calcium carbonate gallbladder stones were easily neglected because they were previously reported as a rare stone type in adults. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between calcium carbonate stones and Clonorchis sinensis infection. A total of 598 gallbladder stones were studied. The stone types were identified by FTIR spectroscopy. The C. sinensis eggs and DNA were detected by microscopic examination and real-time fluorescent PCR respectively. And then, some egg-positive stones were randomly selected for further SEM examination. Corresponding clinical characteristics of

Calcium carbonate obstructive urolithiasis in a red kangaroo (Macropus rufus).

A 6-yr-old male red kangaroo (Macropus rufus) presented for a history of inappetance, abnormal behavior, and unconfirmed elimination for 6 hr prior to presentation. Based on abdominal ultrasound, abdominocentesis, and cystocentesis, a presumptive diagnosis of urinary tract obstruction with uroabdomen and hydronephrosis was reached. Abdominal radiographs did not assist in reaching an antemortem diagnosis. Postmortem examination confirmed a urinary bladder rupture secondary to urethral obstruction by a single urethrolith. Bilateral hydronephrosis and hydroureter were identified and determined to

Calcium carbonate does not affect nilotinib pharmacokinetics in healthy volunteers.

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS SUBJECT: Gastric upset is a common side effect of nilotinib therapy, and calcium carbonate is frequently used concomitantly, either as antacid or as calcium supplementation. With the increasing number of oral agents in cancer therapy, oral drug-drug interactions are becoming more relevant. Nilotinib has already been shown to be absorbed to a much lesser extent when co-administered with proton pump inhibitors. Because exposure to sub-therapeutic concentrations of anticancer drugs such as nilotinib may result in selection of resistant clones and ultimately relaps

Calcitriol and calcium carbonate therapy in early chronic renal failure.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a combined low-dose therapy of calcitriol and calcium carbonate on bone metabolism in the early phases of chronic renal failure. A 30-month study involving 17 patients with ECRF was made: 6 months of observation were followed by 24 months of therapy (calcitriol 0.25 microgram/day plus calcium carbonate 1 g/day). The most important results were that renal function was stable throughout the study and there was an increase in calcaemia and a decrease in plasma alkaline phosphatase, plasma osteocalcin, plasma PTH and urinary hydroxyproline. Reactions of sulfur dioxide on calcium carbonate single crystal and particle surfaces at the adsorbed water carbonate interface.

Sulfur dioxide reactions with calcium carbonate interfaces at 296 K in the presence and absence of adsorbed water result in the formation of adsorbed sulfite and sulfate. The extent of reaction is significantly enhanced, approximately five- to ten-fold for particulate and single crystal CaCO(3) (calcite), respectively, in the presence of adsorbed water between 30 and 85% RH. Atomic force microscopy following the reaction shows that adsorbed water facilitates surface reactivity by enhancing the mobility of surface ions, giving rise to the formation of nanometer sized product crystallites approx

The effects of lanthanum carbonate and calcium carbonate on bone abnormalities in patients with end-stage renal disease.

BACKGROUND: Renal osteodystrophy is a common complication of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and is a major cause of morbidity in patients with ESRD. High serum levels of phosphorus, calcium and parathyroid hormone are associated with the development of this disease. The effects on bone of treatment with lanthanum carbonate, a new phosphate binder, and calcium carbonate were assessed in patients with ESRD. METHODS: This was an open-label, multicenter, parallel-group study. Patients were recruited within 12 weeks of commencing dialysis. Following screening, phosphate binder administration was s

Effect of various bile salts on calcium concentration and calcium carbonate saturation of rat bile.

To establish whether the calcium-binding capacities of the bile salts play an essential role in their stimulatory effects on biliary calcium secretion, we compared (1) the effects of tauro- and glycoconjugates of ursodeoxycholate (TUDC-GUDC) and cholate (TC-GC) on biliary calcium in bile fistula rats, and (2) the in vitro calcium-binding capacities of mixed micelles containing the same bile salts. The increase of biliary calcium depended on the infused bile salt in the following order: GUDC greater than GC = TUDC greater than GC). The same order was obtained in vitro, so that there was a linea

Geometrically structured implants for cranial reconstruction made of biodegradable polyesters and calcium phosphate/calcium carbonate.

The aim of this study was the development of a processing pathway for manufacturing of biodegradable skull implants with individual geometry. The implants on the basis of polylactide and calcium phosphate/calcium carbonate were prepared by a combination of hot pressing and gas foaming. On the inside, the implant consists of a macroporous and faster degradable material (poly(D,L-lactide)+CaCO3) to allow the ingrowth of bone cells. The pore size is in the range of 200-400 microm. On the outside, the implant consists of a compact and slower biodegradable material (poly(L-lactide) and calcium phos

Oral calcium chloride in hypoparathyroidism refractory to massive doses of calcium carbonate and vitamin D.

Surgically induced hypoparathyroidism often responds satisfactorily to intravenous Ca administration, oral CaCO3 and vitamin D2. A 17-year-old girl developed hypoparathyroidism following partial thyroidectomy for thyrotoxicosis. Hypocalcemia was refractory to treatment with massive doses of vitamin D2, up to 150,000 U, 3-6 gm of oral Ca as CaCO3 and 2 micrograms of 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol per day. Intravenous Ca gluconate (360 mg of elemental Ca/d, in divided doses) was needed to correct tetany. After 25 days of unsuccessful therapy, oral administration of 30 ml of a 10% solution of CaCl

Bioavailability of calcium from calcium carbonate, DL-calcium lactate, L-calcium lactate and powdered oyster shell calcium in vitamin D-deficient or -replete rats.

The bioavailability of calcium from various calcium sources in humans and animals has been the subject of investigation for many years and there is considerable controversy as to the relative bioavailability of different calcium salts. Most of the studies have used a calcium balance technique which has numerous problems in terms of performance and interpretation. Using a method for evaluating the efficacy of calcium from calcium salts used for plasma calcium metabolism and bone mineralization, we examined the bioavailability of calcium from four commercially available calcium salts, namely cal

Calcium carbonate supplementation exacerbated gut microenvironment disruption in senile osteoporosis mice.

Calcium carbonate supplements are a fundamental component in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. However, doubts regarding their use in the management of senile osteoporosis have been on the rise. The intestinal microenvironment plays a crucial role in bone metabolism and mineral absorption. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether oral calcium carbonate itself affects the intestinal microbiota, thereby influencing mineral absorption. Using senile osteoporosis mice with 16S rDNA sequencing, the study found calcium disrupted intestinal barrier. It slightly alleviated age-related bone
