Antibiotic-Impregnated Calcium Sulfate vs. Wound Irrigation-Suction to Treat Chronic Calcaneal Osteomyelitis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic osteomyelitis of calcaneus is not rare but is very hard to treat. Irrigation-suction and antibiotic-impregnated calcium sulfate following debridement are commonly used in managing chronic osteomyelitis, but their effects have rarely been compared. We aimed to compare the effectiveness of antibiotic-impregnated calcium sulfate with irrigation-suction in the treatment of patients with chronic calcaneal osteomyelitis. METHODS: From January 2011 to June 2018, adult patients at our institute with chronic osteomyelitis receiving treatment of either antibiotic-impregnated calcium

Synthesis of Calcium Sulfate Nanocrystals via Confined Reaction in Ion-Enriched Instantaneous Microdomains.

Hemihydrate calcium sulfate nanocrystals hold promising potential in biomedical and industrial applications. Conventional synthesis methods typically necessitate high temperatures/pressures, acidic/alkaline media, or expensive organic reagents. This study proposes a facile approach: when dripping CuSO4 aqueous solution into CaCl2 ethanol solution, driven by SO42-, CuSO4 droplets are immediately transformed into numerous SO42--enriched instantaneous microdomains, where Ca2+ and SO42- undergo a confined reaction and aggregate into calcium sulfate crystals, while ethanol suppresses crystal growth

Antibiotic-Impregnated Calcium Sulfate Beads for Local Therapy of Severe Skull Base Osteomyelitis.

We report on a patient with severe progressive osteomyelitis of the lateral skull base, despite targeted long-term antibiotic therapy. Successful treatment and recovery of the facial nerve palsy were achieved through additional surgical debridement and insertion of synthetic calcium sulfate beads as a local antibiotic carrier to the skull base. We describe the characteristics of this novel biodegradable long-term release matrix and the surgical technique in detail. The patient is free from recurrence 2 years postoperatively.

Safety and efficacy of antibiotic-impregnated absorbable calcium sulfate beads (Stimulan) in cranioplasty.

Cranioplasty is a common neurosurgical procedure that follows hemicraniectomy in the setting of neoplasm resection or increased intracranial pressure. Although standardized practices aim at minimizing infection risk, infection of the surgical site has been reported in 6.6%-8.4% of patients. In this work, we document the novel use of synthetic dissolvable antibiotic-impregnated calcium sulfate beads (STIMULANⓇ Rapid Cure, Biocomposites Ltd, Wilmington, NC, USA) in five cases of cranioplasty at our institution. Four patients experienced wound healing as expected with no complications related to

Calcium Sulfate Nanoparticles with Unusual Dispersibility in Organic Solvents for Transparent Film Processing.

Calcium sulfate is one of the most important construction materials. Today it is employed as high-performance compound in medical applications and cement mixtures. We report a synthesis for calcium sulfate nanoparticles with outstanding dispersibility properties in organic solvents without further functionalization. The nanoparticles (amorphous with small γ-anhydrite crystallites, 5-50 nm particle size) form long-term stable dispersions in acetone without any sign of precipitation. 1H NMR spectroscopic techniques and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) reveal absorbed 2-propanol on

Improved calcium sulfate recovery from a reverse osmosis retentate using eutectic freeze crystallization.

A novel low temperature crystallization process called eutectic freeze crystallization (EFC) can produce both salt(s) and ice from a reverse osmosis (RO) stream by operating at the eutectic temperature of a solution. The EFC reject stream, which is de-supersaturated with respect to the scaling component, can subsequently be recycled back to the RO process for increased water recovery. This paper looks at the feasibility of using EFC to remove calcium sulfate from an RO retentate stream and compares the results to recovery rates at 0 and 20 °C. The results showed that there was a greater yield

Calcium Sulfate and Calcium Carbonate Scaling of Thin-Film Composite Polyamide Reverse Osmosis Membranes with Surface-Tethered Polyacrylic Acid Chains.

The gypsum and calcite scaling propensities of the thin-film composite polyamide (PA-TFC) reverse osmosis (RO) membrane, modified with a tethered surface layer of polyacrylic acid (PAA) chains, was evaluated and compared to the scaling of selected commercial RO membranes. The tethered PAA layer was synthesized onto a commercial polyamide membrane (i.e., base-PA) via atmospheric pressure plasma-induced graft polymerization (APPIGP). The PAA nano-structured (SNS) base-PA membrane (SNS-PAA-PA) was scaled to a lesser degree, as quantified by a lower permeate flux decline and surface imaging, relat

Degree of sulfation of freeze-dried calcium alginate sulfate scaffolds dramatically influence healing rate of full-thickness diabetic wounds.

Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a chronic and non-healing wound in all age categories with a high prevalence and mortality in the world. An ideal wound dressing for DFU should possess the ability of adsorbing high contents of exudate and actively promote wound healing. Here, we introduced the calcium alginate sulfate as a new biomaterial appropriate for use in wound dressing to promote the healing of full-thickness ulcers in a diabetic mouse model. In this regard, alginate sulfate (Alg-S) solutions with different degrees of substitution (DS) of 0.2, 0.5, and 0.9 were synthesized, freeze-dried, cr

Evaluation of the effects of tideglusib and calcium sulfate on the healing of experimental bone defects in rabbits.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of tideglusib and bone graft mixture on bone healing. Tideglusib is a drug used in the treatment of various neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. In a relevant study, the positive effect of tideglusib on the Wnt pathway, one of the pathways involved in bone regeneration and dentin tissue regeneration, was demonstrated. Dentin and bone tissues have structurally similar healing mechanisms. Therefore, tideglusib may have a similar effect on the bone tissue. The main goal of bone grafting is to provide bone regeneration and functional healing

Calcium sulfate in the management of osteomyelitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis of comparative studies.

BACKGROUND: Calcium sulfate (CS) is used extensively as an antibiotic carrier in the treatment of chronic osteomyelitis, largely due to its biodegradable nature. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to analyze the comprehensive performance of CS in the literature when compared to other biomaterials or treatments for osteomyelitis. We assess the ability of CS to eradicate infection and achieve other key clinical outcomes. METHODS: All studies comparing the use of CS to any other surgical technique for the surgical management of osteomyelitis were eligible for analysis. The in

Effectiveness of Calcium Sulfate and Hydroxyapatite Composite in Collapse Prevention in Osteonecrosis of Femoral Head.

Introduction Calcium-sulfate-hydroxyapatite bioceramics have been widely used as void fillers in bone. However, their effectiveness as void fillers in core decompression for osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) in preventing femoral head collapse prevention has limited evidence. The current study investigates the effectiveness of calcium-sulfate-hydroxyapatite bioceramics as a void filler in the core decompression procedure for ONFH. Methods We retrospectively reviewed the clinical and radiological records of ONFH patients that underwent core-decompression using either autologous iliac cre

In vivo evaluation of calcium sulfate as a bone graft substitute for lumbar spinal fusion.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Posterolateral fusions of the lumbar spine have nonunion rates as high as 35%. The availability of autologous bone to promote fusion is limited, particularly for multilevel fusions. Bone substitutes have been proposed to augment or replace autologous bone for spinal surgery. Calcium sulfate offers high porosity, osteoconductivity, and high resorption rate. This material has been used successfully for treatment of long bone defects but has not been investigated as a bone graft substitute for spinal fusions. PURPOSE: To determine whether the use of calcium sulfate granules i

Use of Antibiotic Eluting Calcium Sulfate Beads in High-Risk Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty.

Local delivery of high-dose antibiotics via absorbable calcium sulfate beads has been investigated as a treatment of prosthetic joint infection (PJI). We investigate this strategy as a prophylactic measure for high-risk patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA). A retrospective review of a single-surgeon consecutive series of primary TKA patients with identified risk factors for PJI development was performed. These patients were treated with calcium sulfate beads containing 1 g of vancomycin and 1.2 g of tobramycin per 10 cc, with 10 cc placed intraarticularly. Outcomes include

Identifying alternative antibiotics that elute from calcium sulfate beads for treatment of orthopedic infections.

There has been increasing interest in the use of a synthetic absorbable calcium sulfate (CaSO4 ) for local antibiotic delivery in orthopaedic infections. The purpose of this study was to quantify elution kinetics of six antibiotics (amikacin, meropenem, fosfomycin, minocycline, cefazolin, and dalbavancin) from a clinically relevant CaSO4 bead model and compare elution and antimicrobial activity to the current clinical gold standards: vancomycin and tobramycin. Antibiotic-loaded synthetic CaSO4 beads were immersed in phosphate buffered saline and incubated at 37°C. Eluent was harvested at eight

[Treatment of patients with cholelithiasis and concomitant gastritis using sodium-calcium sulfate mineral water].

Choledocholithiasis (CDL) is known to be associated with gastric problems, such as disturbances of secretory function of the stomach. A frequent occurrence in this pathological condition is chronic gastritis with atrophy of gastric mucosa. It was shown that consumption of Uvinskaya mineral water during the period preceding calculi formation has beneficial therapeutic effect not only on the gallbladder function but also on both the morphological structure of the stomach and the secretory function of its mucous membrane.
