[Indirect calorimetry in artificially respirated children. 2. A measuring procedure and its evaluation in a newly developed metabolism-lung model].

A new device for continuous measuring oxygen uptake (VO2) and carbondioxide elimination (VCO2) in artificially ventilated or CPAP-system breathing children has been developed. A dual-channel analyzer system based on zirconiumoxyd cells measures oxygen fractions. This allows not only single measurements but also continuous determination of fraction differences for oxygen (delta FO2) (accuracy +/- 0.003 Vol%). Carbondioxide is measured by infrared absorption. A mixing device for inspiratory gas was designed to smooth fluctuations of inspired oxygen fractions almost completely. The reliable sampl

Feasibility of energy expenditure estimation during outdoor walking using multimodal in-ear sensors: a preliminary validation study against indirect calorimetry.

A growing number of portable devices has become available for daily physical activity and energy expenditure (EE) monitoring. Although several studies have examined EE estimation using heart rate (HR) and accelerometry (ACC), no study to date has explored EE prediction based on HR and ACC data measured simultaneously in the ear canal by a single commercial wearable device. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of estimating EE using the cosinuss[Formula: see text] in-ear sensors [Formula: see text]One and [Formula: see text]Two. Comparative evaluation of bags used to collect samples of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and methane for use in open-circuit indirect calorimetry.

Methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), and oxygen (O2) are the major gases produced by dairy cattle as a result of rumen fermentation and metabolism, and thus, their concentrations are frequently measured as a way of estimating heat production and energy metabolism. A well-utilized method of measuring gas consumption and production to estimate heat production is indirect calorimetry, which requires bags to retain the sampled gases until analysis. The objective of this study was to determine the ability of a polyvinyl fluoride gas bag (PF) and a multilayer fabrication gas bag containing an alumin

The Test-Retest Reliability of Indirect Calorimetry Measures of Energy Expenditure During Overground Walking in Older Adults With Mobility Limitations.

The purpose of this study was to assess the relative and absolute reliability of metabolic measures of energy expenditure and gait speed during overground walking in older adults with mobility limitations. Thirty-three (mean age [SD] = 76.4 [6.6] years; 66% female) older adults with slow gait participated. Measures of energy expenditure and gait speed were recorded during two 6-min bouts of overground walking (1 week apart) at a self-selected "usual" walking pace. The relative reliability for all variables was excellent: ICC = .81-.91. Mean differences for five of the six outcome variables was

Comparing indirect calorimetry and predictive equations for energy expenditure - 1 year follow-up of adult hematopoietic stem cell transplanted recipients.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Recipients of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) often undergo body composition changes that may impact their energy expenditure (EE), however, the accurate energy requirements may be difficult to estimate. Indirect calorimetry (IC) is recommended as the gold standard to assess measured energy expenditure (mEE), but its use is resource-demanding and thus rarely applied compared to predictive energy equations. Here we evaluated the agreement between mEE by IC and EE estimated by several predictive energy equations, or the ESPEN recommendation, du

To measure or to estimate? A comparison between indirect calorimetry and predictive equations for resting metabolic rate in institutionalized older adults: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Population aging and institutionalization require accurate energy estimates for the maintenance of health and vitality. Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) is frequently estimated using predictive equations; however, their accuracy in institutionalized older adults remains uncertain, which may compromise nutritional management and worsen clinical outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the accuracy of RMR predictive equations compared to the gold standard of indirect calorimetry in residents of Long-Term Care Facilities (LTCFs). METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in ac

Expanding the use of indirect calorimetry in critical care settings to determine the impact on nutrition interventions and compare to predictive equations: A quality improvement initiative.

BACKGROUND: Critical illness leads to a hypermetabolic state, increasing the risk of malnutrition, infectious complications, and poor outcomes. Current guidelines recommend early enteral nutrition (EN) support; however, determining appropriate caloric provision remains challenging. Indirect calorimetry (IC) is the gold standard for assessing resting energy expenditure (REE) in critically ill patients, yet its use is limited due to various constraints. METHODS: A quality improvement initiative was launched at the Mayo Clinic to increase the use of IC among critically ill adults. The primary ob

Total energy expenditure and its components in healthy young adults from Southwest China using doubly labeled water, indirect calorimetry, accelerometry, and energy intake.

BACKGROUND: Energy requirement (ER) in young adults is commonly estimated from predicted resting metabolic rate (RMR) and assumed physical activity level (PAL). These assumptions may not fully reflect free-living total energy expenditure (TEE) in healthy young adults from Southwest China with low-activity daily routines. OBJECTIVE: This study compared doubly labeled water (DLW)-measured TEE with factorial TEE based on measured RMR and with equation-estimated TEE, interpreted as estimated ER, derived from Chinese and FAO/WHO/UNU RMR prediction equations. Measured and predicted RMR, TEE partiti

A novel cell indirect calorimetry method unveils the metabolic fluxomic signatures of human monocyte-derived M(LPS + IFN-γ) and M(IL-4) macrophages.

Macrophages (MΦ) display distinct immunometabolic phenotypes upon polarization. While transcriptomic analyses have suggested divergent metabolic programs in human M(LPS + IFN-γ) and M(IL-4) MΦ, a comprehensive assessment of their metabolic fluxes is lacking. The aim of this study is to 1) develop and validate a novel indirect microcalorimetry method for quantifying cellular metabolic fluxes, and 2) exploit it to characterize fluxomic signatures of polarized human monocyte-derived macrophages. MΦ from healthy donors were differentiated into unstimulated macrophages (M0), M(LPS + IFN-γ), and M(I

External Validation with Accuracy Confounders of VCO2-Derived Predicted Energy Expenditure Compared to Resting Energy Expenditure Measured by Indirect Calorimetry in Mechanically Ventilated Children.

Optimal energy provision, guided by measured resting energy expenditure (REE) and determined by indirect calorimetry (IC), is fundamental in Intensive Care Units (ICU). Because IC availability is limited, methods to predict REE based on carbon dioxide production (VCO2) measurements (REEVCO2) alone have been proposed as a surrogate for REE measured by IC (REEIC). The study aimed at externally and internally validating the accuracy of the REEVCO2 as an alternative to REEIC in mechanically ventilated children. A ventilator’s integrated gas exchange module (E-COVX) was used to prospectively measur

Harris-Benedict equation estimations of energy needs as compared to measured 24-h energy expenditure by indirect calorimetry in people with early to mid-stage Huntington's disease.

Weight loss and energy metabolism are important clinical research areas in understanding the disease mechanisms in Huntington's disease. Having an accurate method to estimate expected total energy expenditure would likely facilitate the development of studies about these features of the disease. The Harris-Benedict equation is a formula commonly used to estimate basal energy expenditure of individuals, adjusted for height, weight, age and gender. This estimate is then multiplied by a physical activity factor to estimate total daily energy needs to maintain the given weight. Data from 24-h indi

Perioperative estimations of oxygen consumption from LiDCO™plus-derived cardiac output and Ca-cvO2 difference: Relationship with measurements by indirect calorimetry in elderly patients undergoing major abdominal surgery.

BACKGROUND: Feasible estimations of perioperative changes in oxygen consumption (VO2) could enable larger studies of its role in postoperative outcomes. Current methods, either by reverse Fick calculations using pulmonary artery catheterisation or metabolic by breathing gas analysis, are often deemed too invasive or technically requiring. In addition, reverse Fick calculations report generally lower values of oxygen consumption. METHODS: We investigated the relationship between perioperative estimations of VO2 (EVO2), from LiDCO™plus-derived (LiDCO Ltd, Cambridge, UK) cardiac output and arter
