Human intestinal sarcocystosis (HIS), caused by Sarcocystis species, is acquired by eating undercooked meat from sarcocyst-containing cattle (S. hominis, S. heydorni) and pigs (S. suihominis). We report on the detection of human intestinal Sarcocystis infections in a cross-sectional survey of Strongyloides stercoralis in early 2014, in Rovieng District, Preah Vihear Province, northern Cambodia. Among 1081 participants, 108 (10.0%) were diagnosed with Sarcocystis spp. oocysts in stool samples. Males had a significantly higher risk of infection than females (OR: 1.9, 95% CI: 1.3-2.9, p=0.001). N

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Pediculus capitis is the most common human ectoparasite. When it feeds on the blood through the scalp of its host, the anticoagulant in its saliva causes scalp inflammation and itching, and consequent scratching by the host causes further inflammation from bacterial infection. P. capitis infestation is currently a common parasitic dermatosis and a critical public health concern in underdeveloped countries.
METHODS: Through naked eye inspection of P. capitis on or in the hair from 323 school children in Cambodia.
RESULTS: A total of 143 children (44.3%) were found to have

BACKGROUND: Pediatric bacterial bloodstream infections (BSIs) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Epidemiological data from resource-limited settings in southeast Asia, such as Cambodia, are sparse but have important implications for treatment and public health strategies.
METHODS: We retrospectively investigated BSI in children at a pediatric hospital and its satellite clinic in Siem Reap, Cambodia, from January 1, 2007, to July 31, 2011. The range of bacterial pathogens and their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns were analyzed in conjunction with demographic, clinica

We investigated infection of rodents and shrews by Leptospira spp. in two localities of Cambodia (Veal Renh, Kaev Seima) and in four types of habitat (forests, non-flooded lands, lowland rain-fed paddy fields, houses) during the wet and the dry seasons. Habitat preference was common, and rodent and shrew species were found only in houses or in rain-fed paddy fields or in forests. Among 649 small mammals trapped belonging to 12 rodent species and 1 shrew species, 71 of 642 animals tested were carriers of Leptospira according to the 16S ribosomal RNA marker used. Rodent infection was higher in l

The international journal of tuberculosis and lung disease : the official journal of the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease2007eng
SETTING: Banteay Meanchey Province, Cambodia.
OBJECTIVE: The World Health Organization recommends human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing for all tuberculosis (TB) patients and TB screening for all HIV-infected persons in countries with a TB-HIV syndemic. We sought to determine whether evidence supports implementing these recommendations in South-East Asia.
DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional survey and retrospective cohort study of patients newly diagnosed with HIV or TB from October 2003 to February 2005 to identify risk factors for HIV infection and TB, and for death during TB treat

BACKGROUND: In Cambodia, epidemiology and disease burden of leptospirosis were not addressed as they do not have an existing surveillance system and have limitations on their laboratory diagnosis.
OBJECTIVE: Define the existence of leptospirosis and determine the antibodies to serovars of leptospires in Cambodia.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: One hundred and twenty-one suspected cases of leptospirosis were enrolled in this cross-sectional study, between September 8 and November 30, 2003 from Takeo Provincial Hospital in Doun Keo District, Cambodia.
RESULTS: Common clinical manifestations were fever

BACKGROUND: The pattern of host defense against plasmodium is comparable to the immune response to bacterial infection. Posttraumatic immunosuppression may therefore cause relapses of malaria secondary to trauma and trauma surgery in asymptomatic carriers of the parasites in endemic areas. To our knowledge this has not been validated in epidemiologic studies.
METHODS: Postinjury malaria was registered retrospectively in 342 land mine and war victims from malaria-endemic areas in Cambodia. The incidence rate was analyzed in terms of age, gender, preinjury endemicity, evacuation times, anatomic

BACKGROUND: The prevalence rates of scabies are compared in Bamako, Mali, Karonga District, Malawi, and Battambang Province, Cambodia.
METHODS: In Mali, children attending three different urban schools catering for different socio-economic levels were examined specifically for scabies. In Malawi, data were collected during a total population survey for leprosy. In Cambodia, a sample survey was carried out in a rural area to determine the prevalence of leprosy and other skin diseases.
RESULTS: In Mali, the prevalence rate of scabies among all the children examined was 4% (44/1103), but only 1

Amoebic liver abscess is a common disease in developing countries. Although therapy is now perfectly standardized, errors and inaccuracies are frequent in daily practice. A study was performed at the Calmette Hospital in Phnom Penh (Cambodia) to evaluate and improve this situation. Diagnostic criteria and the outcome of treatment with oral or parenteral metronidazole were analyzed in 38 patients presenting amoebic liver abscess. Hepatalgia was observed in 100% of cases. Hyperleukocytosis and enhancement of the sedimentation rate occurred in 95% of cases. Diagnosis was confirmed by ultrasonogra

Cambodia has one of the highest tuberculosis (TB) incidence rates in the WHO Western Pacific region. Remarkably though, the prevalence of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) remains low. We explored the genetic diversity of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) circulating in this unique setting using whole-genome sequencing (WGS). From October 2017 until January 2018, we collected one hundred sputum specimens from consenting adults older than 21 years of age, newly diagnosed with bacteriologically confirmed TB in 3 districts of Phnom Penh and Takeo provinces of Cambodia before they commence on their T

We describe 6 clinical isolates of Elizabethkingia anophelis from a pediatric referral hospital in Cambodia, along with 1 isolate reported from Thailand. Improving diagnostic microbiological methods in resource-limited settings will increase the frequency of reporting for this pathogen. Consensus on therapeutic options is needed, especially for resource-limited settings.

OBJECTIVE: To better understand the potential risks of Nipah virus emergence in Cambodia by studying different components of the interface between humans and bats.
METHODS: From 2012 to 2016, we conducted a study at two sites in Kandal and Battambang provinces where fruit bats (Pteropus lylei) roost. We combined research on: bat ecology (reproductive phenology, population dynamics and diet); human practices and perceptions (ethnographic research and a knowledge, attitude and practice study); and Nipah virus circulation in bat and human populations (virus monitoring in bat urine and anti-Nipah

BACKGROUND: The adverse outcomes of malnutrition on the development of a child are well acknowledged as are the broad variety of contextual factors that may impact child nutritional status. Adequate nutrient intake and the adoption of appropriate water, sanitation and hygiene measures are largely documented for their positive influence on health. Improved sanitation and protection from human feces can significantly lower the incidence of diarrhea and environmental enteropathy. However, the impact of excessive exposure to animal feces on child health is less well documented.
OBJECTIVES: This s

INTRODUCTION: Cambodia is a low-income country with limited access to family planning (FP) in terms of modern contraceptive utilization. Despite several FP programs designed to make contraceptives accessible, adoption of contraceptives has been difficult in Cambodia, which has high rates of fertility and maternal mortality. This gap in essential care can put women and adolescent girls at greater risk of adverse outcomes such as stillbirth, spontaneous abortion, unwanted pregnancy, or even maternal death. One of the goals set by the government to decrease both maternal and child mortality and m

We report the first cases of confirmed human local transmission of borreliosis in Cambodia. Four patients, including cases with no travel history, presented typical clinical signs and tested positive for Borrelia burgdorferi antibodies. These findings confirm the presence, circulation, and local transmission of Borrelia in Cambodia. These results are important to convince for the need and the development of surveillance of tick-borne diseases in Southeast Asia.

A live intraocular nematode was identified from a 37 year-old man presented with iritis, pain, redness, lacrimation, swelling, vision loss and intermittent blindness during many hours per day of the left eye. By using slit lamp examination, a worm was removed from iris in an ophthalmology outpatient department setting and sent to the Medical Microbiology Laboratory, Institut Pasteur du Cambodge. Gnathostoma spinigerum was identified, based on its typical morphology via microscopic examination. Based on our diagnosis, the patient was treated by oral albendazole and responded well to this therap

We describe an analysis of genome variation in 825 P. falciparum samples from Asia and Africa that identifies an unusual pattern of parasite population structure at the epicenter of artemisinin resistance in western Cambodia. Within this relatively small geographic area, we have discovered several distinct but apparently sympatric parasite subpopulations with extremely high levels of genetic differentiation. Of particular interest are three subpopulations, all associated with clinical resistance to artemisinin, which have skewed allele frequency spectra and high levels of haplotype homozygosit

The causes of suppurative parotitis in Cambodian children are not known. We describe 39 cases at the Angkor Hospital for Children, Siem Reap, between January 2007 and July 2011 (0.07/1000 hospital attendances). The median age was 5.7 years with no neonates affected. Burkholderia pseudomallei was cultured in 29 (74%) cases. No deaths occurred; 1 child developed facial nerve palsy.
