Comparison of genotypes and antibiotic resistances of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli on chicken retail meat and at slaughter.

Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and antibiotic resistance patterns of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli from retail chicken meat showed high overlap with isolates collected at slaughterhouses, indicating little selection along the production chain. They also showed significant common sequence types with human clinical isolates, revealing chicken meat as a likely source for human infection.

The Acute Host-Response of Turkeys Colonized With Campylobacter coli.

Consumption of contaminated poultry products is one of the main sources of human campylobacteriosis, of which Campylobacter jejuni subsp. jejuni (C. jejuni) and C. coli are responsible for ~98% of the cases. In turkeys, the ceca are an important anatomical site where Campylobacter asymptomatically colonizes. We previously demonstrated that commercial turkey poults colonized by C. jejuni showed acute changes in cytokine gene expression profiles, and histological intestinal lesions at 2 days post-inoculation (dpi). Cecal tonsils (CT) are an important part of the gastrointestinal-associated lymph

[Annual changes in antimicrobial susceptibility of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli isolated from acute diarrheic patients].

Two hundred thirty-one Campylobacter were isolated from acute diarrheic patients between January 2001 and December 2005. We evaluated annual changes in identified species of Campylobacter and their susceptibilities against antibiotics. Campylobacter jejuni (219 strains; 94.8%) and Campylobacter coli (12 strains; 5.2%) were identified to the species. Susceptibilities to four antimicrobial agents, minocycline (MINO), levofloxacin (LVFX), erythromycin (EM) and clindamycin (CLDM) were examined. The resistant rates of four antimicrobial agents in C. coli were significantly higher than that in C. je

Prevalence and Antimicrobial-Resistant Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli in Free-Range Chickens in Northwest Ethiopia.

Campylobacter enteritis is the most common bacterial foodborne disease in humans. Long-term use of antibiotics in chicken production may result in antimicrobial resistance in Campylobacter strains. Information on the antimicrobial resistance profile of Campylobacter species among free-range chickens in Ethiopia is scarce. Hence, this study aimed to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli among free-range chickens in Amhara National Regional state, northwest Ethiopia from November 1, 2022 to April 30, 2023. Cloacal swabs were collecte

Antimicrobial susceptibility of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli: comparison between Etest and a broth dilution method.

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter is a leading cause of foodborne gasteroenteritis worldwide. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing for Campylobacter spp. is not routinely performed by most clinical laboratories. However, the emergence of resistant isolates strengthens the importance of antimicrobial susceptibility testing and the critical need for epidemiologic surveillance. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of Etest and Sensititre kit (a broth microdilution method) as methods for susceptibility tests and the critical need for epidemiologic surveillance. The aim of this study was to co

Bacteriophage receptor binding protein based assays for the simultaneous detection of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli.

Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli are the most common bacterial causes of foodborne gastroenteritis which is occasionally followed by a debilitating neuropathy known as Guillain-Barré syndrome. Rapid and specific detection of these pathogens is very important for effective control and quick treatment of infection. Most of the diagnostics available for these organisms are time consuming and require technical expertise with expensive instruments and reagents to perform. Bacteriophages bind to their host specifically through their receptor binding proteins (RBPs), which can be exploited

Evaluation of cytotoxic activity in fecal filtrates from patients with Campylobacter jejuni or Campylobacter coli enteritis.

We sought to determine the prevalence of cytotoxic activity in fecal filtrates from persons with C. jejuni or C. coli enteritis. Stool specimens were collected from 20 persons with C. jejuni or C. coli enteritis, 20 persons with acute diarrheal illnesses of other causes, and 9 healthy, asymptomatic persons. Fecal filtrates were then incubated with Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) or HeLa cells. The fecal filtrate from 1 of the 20 (5%) persons with Campylobacter enteritis was cytotoxic for HeLa cells at a titer of 1:40, and 10 (50%) were cytotoxic for CHO cells at maximum titers of 1:20. Modeling multidrug resistance in Campylobacter coli and Campylobacter jejuni isolated from swine at U.S. slaughter plants.

Antimicrobial-resistant and multidrug-resistant Campylobacter spp. poses a human health risk. A total of 1694 isolates from market hogs (1599 Campylobacter coli and 95 C. jejuni) and 965 isolates from sows (918 C. coli and 47 C. jejuni) that were isolated at US slaughter plants from 2013 to 2021 and tested for antimicrobial resistance were included in the analysis. Multidrug resistance (MDR) (resistance ≥ antimicrobial classes) was highest in C. coli isolates from market hogs (29.6%). C. jejuni isolates from both sources had lower MDR rates (8.4% for market hogs and 6.4% for sows). Isolates ba

Draft genomes of multidrug-resistant Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli strains from Brazil representing novel sequence types.

Whole-genome sequencing identified three previously unidentified multilocus sequence types of Campylobacter jejuni (ST-12332) and Campylobacter coli (ST-12333 and ST-12663), harboring resistance genes for multiple antimicrobial classes. The sources of isolation highlight the circulation of resistance strains within animals and humans, emphasizing the need for preventive measures.

First case report of myopericarditis linked to Campylobacter coli enterocolitis.

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter spp. are a common cause of mostly self-limiting enterocolitis. Although rare, pericarditis and myopericarditis have been increasingly documented as complications following campylobacteriosis. Such cases have occurred predominantly in younger males, and involved a single causative species, namely Campylobacter jejuni. We report the first case of myopericarditis following Campylobacter coli enterocolitis, with illness occurring in an immunocompetent middle-aged female. CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-yo female was admitted to a cardiology unit with a 3-days history of chest pa

[Serologic demonstration of antibodies against Campylobacter jejuni/coli in man].

Antibody response to Campylobacter jejuni/coli infections in man was studied by microagglutination assay against homologues organisms isolated from patients and by complement fixation test against a commercially available group-specific antigen of C. jejuni/coli. Titers of agglutinating antibodies raise within 1-2 weeks post infectionem (p.i.) to an extent of about 320 (reciprocal titer) and persist about 3-4 months. CF-antibody titers raise only to about 40 but they persist for a long time. Because of the low titers in the CF-test and because of a missing seroconversion the CF-test is not sui

Experimental infection of laying hens with Campylobacter coli and Campylobacter jejuni: Shedding dynamics and internal organ colonization.

Campylobacteriosis is considered the most common foodborne bacterial zoonosis worldwide. The species most frequently associated with enteric cases in humans is Campylobacter jejuni, followed by C. coli, and they can be transmitted through poultry meat. This study aimed to evaluate the dynamics of fecal shedding and the ability of these pathogens to colonize internal organs in laying hens using an experimental infection model. Two independent trials were conducted using sixteen-week-old laying hens, orally infected with 1 × 10 ³ CFU or 1 × 10 ¹ ⁰ CFU of C. jejuni or C. coli. Cloacal swabs were

Campylobacter coli enteritis associated with Campylobacter fetus bacteremia, spondylodiscitis, and late CIED-related endocarditis, a case report.

Campylobacter sp. is widely considered a leading causative agent of bacterial food-borne gastrointestinal illness. Discitis and endocarditis caused by Campylobacter spp. are extremely rare. We describe the case of a 94-year-old man who was admitted for recent lumbar pain, diarrhea, and fever. C. fetus and C. coli were identified by MALDI-TOF from blood and stool samples respectively. MRI of the spine showed L5-S1 discitis. Patient was treated with 6 weeks of amoxicillin with clinical and microbiological response until cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) related endocarditis occurred f
