Campylobacter fetus is a pathogen, which is primarily associated with fertility problems in sheep and cattle. In humans, it can cause severe infections that require antimicrobial treatment. However, knowledge on the development of antimicrobial resistance in C. fetus is limited. In this paper, we report 21 cases of Campylobacter fetus bloodstream infection observed in our institution over a 9-year period. The median age of the patients was 78 years. Most of them (62%) had a significant underlying disease, such as diabetes, immunodeficiency or cardiovascular disease. The main clinical features were fever with (62% of cases) or without (38%) extra-intestinal symptoms. These included mycotic aneurysm of the abdominal aorta (24%) and cellulitis (19%). Since the sources from which humans acquire Campylobacter enteritis are only partially known, we studied the frequency of carriage of Campylobacter fetus subsp. jejuni in migratory waterfowl. Cecal contents of various species of wild ducks were cultured on selective media that contained antibiotics to inhibit normal flora. Thirty-five percent of the 445 ducks cultured harbored C. fetus subsp. jejuni. Migratory waterfowl are yet another reservoir for this enteric pathogen and may be of public health importance for humans in the contamination of water or when used as food.

Temporary contamination of the penis and prepuce with Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis and Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis biotype intermedius may occur when immunised bulls mate with infected heifers. Campylobacter species are mostly associated with intestinal infections. Campylobacter fetus, however, can cause bacteremia and extra-intestinal infections especially in immunosuppressed patients. To the best of our knowledge, we present the second case of C. fetus causing thyroiditis and thyroid abscess in an immunocompetent young woman.

Campylobacter fetus subspecies fetus is a cause of different obstetric-gynecological diseases. It is a first time when rate of infection with Campylobacter was studied and connection between the infection and development of chronic gynecologic diseases and pathology of labor was established. Bacteria were isolated and identified in 36.0% +/- 0.7 of studied women admitted to inpatient clinics. It was established that Campylobacter fetus subspecies fetus can cause abnormalities in placenta functions as well as different inflammatory processes during pregnancy.

Campylobacter fetus was isolated from five recent cases of human vibriosis, of which two were adults and three were children. One adult presented with pericarditis and the other with recurrent pyrexia. This study constitutes the first reported isolation of C. fetus subsp. venerealis from cervical swabs in breeding camels. 9 of 30 camels which were barren for a long period were found to be positive for C. fetus. The methods of isolation are described. Additionally, cervical flora of 30 camels were examined. 9 different bacterial species were isolated of which Staphylococcus aureus was most frequently found. All samples were negative for Trichomonas sp. and Streptococcus zooepidemicus.

Campylobacter fetusfetus (Cff) is a major infectious cause of abortion in sheep worldwide, and an opportunistic human pathogen. Information on Cff as an ovine abortifacient in South America is limited. We describe a case of abortion caused by a multidrug resistant strain of Cff in a sheep in Uruguay. Preputial fluid samples were collected from 90 bulls in two Ontario artificial insemination units using a penial glove swab technique previously developed by one of us for use in donor bulls. No Campylobacter fetus organisms were identified from the prepuce or from samples of semen collected at the same time from these bulls. The distal genitalia of 200 bulls were collected at a slaughter house. One isolation of a Campylobacter fetus subspecies venerealis was obtained on a culture from the fornix area of the prepuce of one of these bulls.

Bacteremia caused by gram-negative bacteria occasionally causes soft tissue infections, including cellulitis and septic arthritis. We describe 1 patient each with Campylobacter fetus cellulitis and septic arthritis and review the world literature with regard to C. fetus and C. jejuni infections at these sites.
