Urban yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis) and peri-urban Audouin's gull (Larus audouinii) as a source of Campylobacter and Salmonella of public health relevance.

Campylobacter spp. and Salmonella spp. are the leading cause of human enteric infections in the European Union. Some gull species act as reservoirs and play an important role in the epidemiology of these zoonotic agents. To gain insight into Campylobacter and Salmonella epidemiology we studied colonies of Audouin's gull (Larus audouinii) and yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis) in Barcelona metropolitan area, Catalonia (north-eastern Spain). We assessed the occurrence, genetic diversity, virulence potential, and antimicrobial susceptibility of Campylobacter and Salmonella isolates recovered

Establishment of sentinel surveillance of human clinical campylobacteriosis in Ireland.

The aim of this work was the establishment of a national laboratory sentinel surveillance service for human clinical Campylobacter in Ireland. This included detailed genomic molecular epidemiology of Campylobacter for 2019. For February-December 2019, 24 clinical microbiology laboratories in Ireland submitted all PCR/culture-positive clinical Campylobacter spp. specimens to Public Health Laboratory (PHL) Dublin one week out of every four. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) according to European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) criteria was carried out for Camp

Incidence and clinical manifestations of Campylobacter enteritis in central Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter species are recognized as a major cause of acute gastroenteritis in humans throughout the world and are increasingly associated with the development of Guillain-Barré syndrome. The age distribution of persons and the seasonal patterns of Campylobacter infection are different in many developed and developing countries. The present study reports the investigation of the clinical and epidemiologic features of Campylobacter infections in central Taiwan. METHODS: From January 1994 to December 1996, stool specimens from patients with diarrhea or gastroenteritis were cultur

Genomic Analysis Reveals the Genetic Determinants Associated With Antibiotic Resistance in the Zoonotic Pathogen Campylobacter spp. Distributed Globally.

The genus Campylobacter groups 32 Gram-negative bacteria species, several being zoonotic pathogens and a major cause of human gastroenteritis worldwide. Antibiotic resistant Campylobacter is considered by the World Health Organization as a high priority pathogen for research and development of new antibiotics. Genetic elements related to antibiotic resistance in the classical C. coli and C. jejuni species, which infect humans and livestock, have been analyzed in numerous studies, mainly focused on local geographical areas. However, the presence of these resistance determinants in other Campylo

Specific detection and confirmation of Campylobacter jejuni by DNA hybridization and PCR.

Conventional detection and confirmation methods for Campylobacter jejuni are lengthy and tedious. A rapid hybridization protocol in which a 1,475-bp chromogen-labelled DNA probe (pDT1720) and Campylobacter strains filtered and grown on 0.22-micron-pore-size hydrophobic grid membrane filters (HGMFs) are used was developed. Among the environmental and clinical isolates of C. jejuni, Campylobacter coli, Campylobacter jejuni subsp. doylei, Campylobacter lari, and Arcobacter nitrofigilis and a panel of 310 unrelated bacterial strains tested, only C. jejuni and C. jejuni subsp. doylei isolates hybri

Cross-reactivity of outer membrane proteins of Campylobacter species with cholera toxin.

Campylobacter jejuni is a foodborne pathogen and a leading cause of diarrhoea worldwide. It is believed that a cholera toxin-like toxin (CTLT) produced by C. jejuni may mediate watery diarrhoea. However, the production of a CTLT by C. jejuni is controversial. A cholera toxin gene (ctx) homologue has not been identified in Campylobacter species. We investigated the identity of the CT cross-reactive antigen from Campylobacter species previously and the results are reviewed here. Filtrates of C. jejuni grown in four different liquid media, reported to promote CTLT production, were tested by Chine

Immunity to infections in the lower genital tract of bulls.

The mucosa of the bovine prepuce has unique immunological characteristics critical to defense against sexually transmitted diseases. Tritrichomonas foetus and Campylobacter fetus subspecies venerealis persistently colonize the lower genital tract of bulls but usually do not cause either major clinical signs or inflammation. These microbes may be sexually transmitted to female cattle to cause reproductive failure. Although the male genital immune responses to T. foetus and C. fetus subspecies venerealis are inefficient in clearing infection, systemic immunization with T. foetus and C. fetus sub

Campylobacter species and genotype distribution in Finnish beef liver - Retail liver juice ideal for isolation and quantification.

Campylobacteriosis, primarily caused by Campylobacter jejuni and C. coli, is the main bacterial zoonosis worldwide. While poultry is recognized as the main reservoir, bovines are considered another important reservoir for Campylobacter spp. found in human infections. In contrast to chicken, retail beef is seldom contaminated by Campylobacter species. However, beef liver is recognized to be frequently contaminated and has been linked to human infections via epidemiological investigations. Our aims were to evaluate the prevalence of Campylobacter spp. inside and on the surface of beef liver piec

Prevalence and antibiotic susceptibility of thermophilic Campylobacter species on beef, mutton, and chicken carcasses in Istanbul, Turkey.

We investigated the prevalence of contamination of retail-level beef, mutton, and broiler carcasses in Istanbul, Turkey, by thermophilic Campylobacter spp. (TCS) and determined antimicrobial susceptibilities of the TCS strains isolated from these carcasses. From November 2005 to October 2006, 198 beef and 120 mutton carcass excision samples, and 232 chicken carcasses (whole and pieces) were randomly collected from different retail stores and meat-processing plants in Istanbul. TCS were isolated from 11.1%, 21.6%, and 50.4% of beef, mutton, and chicken samples tested, respectively. There was no

Effect of incubation temperature, time, and freezing on diversity of Campylobacter spp. recovered from naturally contaminated retail beef livers.

Retail beef livers are often contaminated with Campylobacter species and represent a potential transmission route for human infections. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of incubation temperature and time on the isolation rate of different Campylobacter species from retail bovine liver juice samples, and the effect of freezing on the recovery of Campylobacter spp. from the naturally contaminated liver samples. Fresh retail beef liver packages (N = 20), packed in modified atmosphere, were purchased from local stores and examined using direct culture on mCCDA. All colonies grown u

Using Campylobacter spp. and Escherichia coli data and Bayesian microbial risk assessment to examine public health risks in agricultural watersheds under tile drainage management.

Human campylobacteriosis is the leading bacterial gastrointestinal illness in Canada; environmental transmission has been implicated in addition to transmission via consumption of contaminated food. Information about Campylobacter spp. occurrence at the watershed scale will enhance our understanding of the associated public health risks and the efficacy of source water protection strategies. The overriding purpose of this study is to provide a quantitative framework to assess and compare the relative public health significance of watershed microbial water quality associated with agricultural B

Do humans spread zoonotic enteric bacteria in Antarctica?

Reports of enteric bacteria in Antarctic wildlife have suggested its spread from people to seabirds and seals, but evidence is scarce and fragmentary. We investigated the occurrence of zoonotic enteric bacteria in seabirds across the Antarctic and subantarctic region; for comparison purposes, in addition to seabirds, poultry in a subantarctic island was also sampled. Three findings suggest reverse zoonosis from humans to seabirds: the detection of a zoonotic Salmonella serovar (ser. Enteritidis) and Campylobacter species (e.g. C. jejuni), typical of human infections; the resistance of C. lari

Molecular-based identification and typing of Campylobacter jejuni and C. coli.

Thermophilic Campylobacter spp., mainly Campylobacter jejuni and to a lesser extent C. coli are recognized as the most common bacteriological causes of gastroenteritis in humans. As enteric infection with Campylobacter organisms cannot be distinguished from that caused by other enteric pathogens, a definitive diagnosis can only be made by isolating or detecting the organism from the feces. The epidemiology of Campylobacter enteritis has been complicated by the ubiquitous nature of the organism (commonly found as a commensal in the intestines of domestic animals, in milk, and in water). Further
