BACKGROUND: The collection of subgingival plaque samples with paper points is time-consuming and accident-sensitive. However, the collection of saliva is simple and contains pathogens of all intraoral surfaces. The aim of this study is to investigate whether a sampling strategy with mouthrinse (mouthrinse sample [MSP]; test) leads to results comparable with standard sampling method (multiple site test from the deepest pocket of each quadrant [MT4]; control).
METHODS: In 50 patients with periodontitis, subgingival plaque was sampled from the deepest pocket of each quadrant by using paper point

Chronic periodontitis is associated with systemic diseases such as atherosclerosis. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of serum IgG antibody titer to periodontal bacteria for prognosis of periodontitis recurrence during supportive periodontal therapy (SPT) phase. The 139 patients during SPT phase were selected and divided to two groups as follows: "Stable" and "Recurrence" group at SPT phase for case-control study: "High IgG titer" and "Normal IgG titer" group before transition to SPT phase for cohort study. We examined whether clinical findings or serum IgG antibody titers to periodonta

INTRODUCTION: The gastrointestinal system is strongly associated with the oral mucosa including periodontal tissues. Infl ammatory bowel disease (IBD) has two common forms: Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Local inflammation in periodontal diseases (PD) has an impact on infl ammatory diseases in various parts of the body. The existence of periodontitis in IBD patients suggests the possibility that the two inflammatory conditions may have common pathogenic pathways. Both diseases are multifactorial conditions in which genetic and environmental factors initiate and maintain the

Metal ions were evaluated as potential antimicrobial agents suitable for local delivery in the oral cavity for the treatment of periodontitis. Silver nitrate, copper chloride, and zinc chloride were tested for antimicrobial activity in in vitro killing assays conducted in phosphate buffered saline with a series of oral bacteria including gram-negative periodontal pathogens and gram-positive streptococci. Copper and zinc salts failed to exhibit strong and consistent activity against periodontal pathogens. In contrast, silver at a concentration of 0.5 microg/mL produced a 3 log10 reduction in co

A small number of bacterial pathogens in the human oral cavity cause the different forms of periodontal disease. Of the approximately two hundred different oral bacterial species, about a dozen have been associated with these diseases including localized juvenile periodontitis, rapidly progressing periodontitis, and adult periodontitis. These species include Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Bacteroides forsythus, Campylobacter rectus, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Prevotella intermedia. Several rapid methods have been developed to detect these species in clinical samples. These include im

Periodontopathic bacteria cause an inflammatory disease localized in the periodontal tissue and are associated with various conditions in other body parts. The distribution of periodontopathic bacterial species in the tonsils is unknown, even though the tonsils are located close to the oral cavity, and inflammation of the tonsils causes various systemic diseases. We detected the major periodontopathic bacterial species residing in saliva and tonsil specimens from 25 subjects undergoing tonsillectomy. Nine of the ten major periodontopathic bacterial species were detected by polymerase chain rea

BACKGROUND: Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans is considered a major etiologic agent of aggressive periodontitis. Other periodontopathic bacteria such as Porphyromonas gingivalis are also suspected of participating in aggressive periodontitis, although the evidence is controversial. The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of periodontopathic bacteria and to clarify the microbiological features of aggressive periodontitis in Japanese patients.
METHODS: Subgingival plaque was collected from 50 aggressive periodontitis (AgP) patients (localized 10, generalized 40). Sampl

BACKGROUND: Recent findings have begun to provide a basis for a causal link between herpesviruses and aggressive periodontitis. One theory is that herpesviruses cooperate with specific bacteria in the etiopathogenesis of the disease. This study examined whether the presence of herpesviruses [human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) type 1, herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 and 2] is associated with the presence of putative pathogenic bacteria (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, Tannerella forsythia, Campylobacter rectus, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans) in aggr

BACKGROUND: The detection of special bacterial species in patients with periodontitis is considered to be useful for clinical diagnosis and treatment. The collection of subgingival plaque samples is the common way for the determination of periodontopathic bacteria. However, recently, salivary analysis has been discussed as an advantageous future diagnostic method for periodontitis because it offers simple quantitative sampling and the possibility to assess various bacteria. The aim of this cross-sectional study is to investigate whether there is a correlation between the results of different b

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Periodontitis is an infectious disease, but the specific mechanisms by which tooth-supportive tissues are lost remain obscure. This article proposes an infectious disease model for periodontitis in which herpesviral-bacterial interactions assume a major etiopathogenic role.
RECENT FINDINGS: Epstein-Barr virus type 1, cytomegalovirus and other herpesviruses occur at a high frequency in aggressive periodontitis lesions. Also, herpesvirus-infected periodontitis lesions tend to harbor elevated levels of classic periodontopathic bacteria, including Porphyromonas gingivalis, Dial

As a member of subgingival multispecies biofilms, Tannerella forsythia is commonly associated with periodontitis. The bacterium has a characteristic cell surface (S-) layer modified with a unique O-glycan. Both the S-layer and the O-glycan were analyzed in this study for their role in biofilm formation by employing an in vitro multispecies biofilm model mimicking the situation in the oral cavity. Different T. forsythia strains and mutants with characterized defects in cell surface composition were incorporated into the model, together with nine species of select oral bacteria. The influence of
