The present clinical case concerns two patients with mycotic keratitis because of Candida parapsilosis in which corneal confocal microscopy presented a characteristic feature of this pathogen. Both described patients used a therapeutic contact lens and administered a therapy with steroid eye drops which are well known predisposing factors for the onset of corneal mycoses. This report can be useful for correctly identifying the pathologic condition and quickly directing the therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Candida parapsilosis, a pathogenic yeast associated with systemic infections, exhibits metabolic adaptability in response to nutrient availability.
METHODS: We investigated the impact of RPMI glucose supplemented (RPMId), TSB, BHI and YPD media on C. parapsilosis growth, morphology, susceptibility (caspofungin and amphotericin B), and in vivo virulence (Galleria mellonella) in planktonic and biofilm states.
RESULTS: High-glucose media favors growth but hinders metabolic activity and filamentation. Media promoting carbohydrate production reduces biofilm susceptibility. Virulence

Candida parapsilosis has emerged as a frequent cause of invasive candidiasis with increasing evidence of unique biological features relative to C. albicans As it adapts to conditions within a mammalian host, rapid changes in gene expression are necessary to facilitate colonization and persistence in this environment. Adhesion of the organism to biological surfaces is a key first step in this process and is the focus of this study. Building on previous observations showing the importance of a member of the ALS gene family in C. parapsilosis adhesion, three clinical isolates were cultured under

The prevalence of Candida parapsilosis, an opportunistic human pathogenic fungal species, is increasing at an alarming rate in the hospital environment. Patients at risk for C. parapsilosis infection include those with immunosuppression, such as individuals with cancer, AIDS, and low birth weight premature neonates as well as patients that had undergone abdominal surgery. Neonatal candidiasis caused by C. parapsilosis has been widely reported across the globe. Various reports have shown that, compared to other Candida species, certain C. parapsilosis clinical isolates were less susceptible to

A 58-year old male presented with meningitis associated with subgaleal and subdural collections 6 weeks following a temporal craniotomy for resection of recurrent glioblastoma multiforme and Gliadel wafer implantation. Candida parapsilosis was cultured from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and Gliadel wafers removed during surgical debridement. He was successfully treated with liposomal amphotericin B. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of Candida parapsilosis meningitis secondary to Gliadel wafer placement.

Candida parapsilosis has emerged as an important nosocomial pathogen. In the present study, a checkerboard broth microdilution method was performed to investigate the in vitro activities of caspofungin (CAS) in combination with amphotericin B (AMB) against three clinical isolates of C. parapsilosis. Although there was a significant reduction of the MIC of one or both drugs used in combination, an indifferent interaction (fractional inhibitory concentration index greater than 0.50 and less than or equal to 4.0) was observed in 100% of cases. This finding was confirmed by killing curve studies.

The Candida parapsilosis group encompasses three species: C. parapsilosis, Candida orthopsilosis and Candida metapsilosis. These species are phenotypically indistinguishable, and molecular methods are needed for their detection. We analysed 152 unique blood culture isolates of the C. parapsilosis group obtained during 1997-2011. The isolates were screened by PCR amplification of the gene encoding secondary alcohol dehydrogenase, followed by digestion with the restriction enzyme BanI. Isolates with RFLP patterns distinct from those of the C. parapsilosis group were characterized as C. parapsilo

Candida parapsilosis is an exceedingly rare cause of ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt infection, even in patients who have a history of long-term antibiotic use, immune-compromised newborns, and intensive care unit patients. We hereby report a case of a 53-year-old male who presented with subarachnoid hemorrhage and had a complicated postoperative course due to C. parapsilosis infection, and we discuss the pertinent clinical aspects.

Candida parapsilosis is an opportunistic yeast that was recently deemed a high- importance fungal pathogen by the World Health Organization. In fact, C. parapsilosis poses an escalating threat in healthcare settings due to its ability to adapt to diverse environments, propensity for human-to-human transmission, and capacity to develop antifungal resistance. Recent studies emphasize its rising clinical importance, particularly with the increasing resistance to antifungals and the emergence of clonal outbreaks, making it a serious threat to public health. This review provides an up-to-date synth

INTRODUCTION: Infective endocarditis (IE) due to Candida species is a rare disease representing about 1-2% of all IE cases and carries a high mortality rate. Given the rarity of the disease, there are no clear guidelines on the type and duration of antifungal therapy. Thus, long-term or even life-long antifungal treatment is commonly used.
CASE REPORT: We report two patients with prosthetic valve C. parapsilosis IE and persistent candidemia that failed conservative treatment and ultimately developed heart failure. They underwent prosthetic valve replacement and prolonged antifungal treatment

Candida albicans is regarded as the major pathogen in yeast-induced onychomycosis. Based on our impression of an increasing prevalence of Candida parapsilosis in this disease, we examined the data of two mycology laboratories in the same geographic location, from 1994 to 1996 in one (centre A) and for 1995 (6 months) in the other (centre B). A total of 954 and 230 toenails and 621 and 190 fingernails, respectively, underwent KOH microscopy and culture studies in each centre. Positive findings were noted in 45 and 65% of the toenails and 44 and 72% of the fingernails, respectively. In the toena

Candida parapsilosis fungemia secondary to nasal colonization following application of nasal prongs for oxygen therapy developed in a 61-year-old man with known chronic lymphocytic leukemia and pulmonary infiltrates. Amphotericin B controlled the candidal infection, but the patient died of complications related to Aspergillus pneumonitis, intra-abdominal mucormycosis, and leukemia. The source of candidal infection was probably a combination of nasal ulceration resulting from oxygen administration by nasal prongs and alteration of the normal mucosal flora by multiple broad-spectrum antibiotics.

Candida albicans causes the majority of invasive candidiasis in immunocompromised adults while Candida parapsilosis is a leading cause of neonatal candidiasis. While much work has focused on how the immune system recognizes and responds to C. albicans, less is known about host interaction with C. parapsilosis. This study investigates the human neutrophil phagocytic response to these species. Neutrophils underwent phagocytosis of C. parapsilosis yeast and C. albicans hyphae much more efficiently than C. albicans yeast. Treatment of neutrophils with a galectin-3 (gal3) blocking antibody inhibite

OBJECTIVES: Candida parapsilosis is an important opportunistic fungal pathogen causing serious human infections in nosocomial settings. It has long been thought that C. parapsilosis has a diploid genome with a high homozygosity between chromosome homologs.
METHODS: In this study, we report the discovery of C. parapsilosis haploids induced by voriconazole, a triazole with broad antifungal activity against fungal pathogens, in an experimental evolutionary assay.
RESULTS: The haploid strains were able to undergo auto-diploidization under in vitro culture conditions or during systemic infection

Candida parapsilosis is an opportunistic pathogen with a propensity for biofilm formation and adhesion to medical devices. Although rare, fungal prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) is a feared complication of disseminated candidemia or direct intraoperative contamination from fungal adherence to prosthetic valves. C. parapsilosis is one of the most common species underlying fungal endocarditis. We present a 78-year-old male patient 2 months after transcatheter aortic valve replacement with persistent dizziness and a cerebellar stroke found to be secondary to treatment-resistant disseminated ca

Catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) is an important healthcare-associated infection caused by various nosocomial pathogens. Candida parapsilosis has emerged as a crucial causative agent for the CRBSI in the last two decades. Many factors have been associated with the development of CRBSI including, demography, pre-maturity, comorbidities (diabetes mellitus, hypertension, heart diseases, neuropathy, respiratory diseases, renal dysfunction, hematological and solid organ malignancies, and intestinal dysfunction), intensive care unit (ICU) admission, mechanical ventilation (MV), total p

In this article, we describe the first outbreak of Candida parapsilosis fungemia in our hospital. We examined a cluster of four nosocomial cases of C. parapsilosis fungemia that occurred in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of the Affiliated Xingtai People's Hospital of Hebei Medical University over a two-week period. We ascertained patient parameters including clinical characteristics, blood and sputum cultures, and drug sensitivity test results. Cultures from eight blood samples obtained from the four infected preterm infants showed identical characteristics and were identified as C. p

We report a case of onychomycosis with melanonychia due to Candida parapsilosis alone. Candida parapsilosis is now identified in the great majority of candidal onychomycosis, mainly in association with other yeasts. The criteria allowing the distinction between invasion and colonization, the risk factors and the treatment of C. parapsilosis onychomycosis are discussed.
