A patient receiving immunosuppressive treatment for multiple myeloma became granulocytopenic, and acute glossitis developed. Blood cultures were positive for Capnocytophaga, a fastidious Gram-negative bacillus that is known to be part of the normal oral flora and a pathogen for periodontitis. The infection responded to treatment with antibiotics, including penicillin G, to which the organism was sensitive. This is one of the first reports of Capnocytophaga septicemia, and suggests that this organism may be an important pathogen in immunosuppressed patients with oral mucosal lesions.

Loxosceles spp. bites can occasionally lead to systemic loxoscelism, including hemolysis and severe systemic illness. Secondary bacterial infections after spider bites are rarely reported and usually limited to skin commensals. We describe a patient with violin spider (Loxosceles rufescens) bite complicated by Capnocytophaga canimorsus sepsis, an emerging zoonotic pathogen classically linked to dog and cat bites. Blood cultures confirmed the infection, although subsequent non-viability of the isolate precluded antimicrobial susceptibility testing and genomic characterization. This case highlig

BACKGROUND: Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a rare human pathogen, typically associated with exposure to dog saliva. It is a slow-growing, Gram-negative anaerobe, with clinical manifestations being sepsis, meningitis, or endocarditis. Pituitary abscesses are themselves uncommon, accounting for <1% of all pituitary lesions, and are often misdiagnosed preoperatively due to their nonspecific presentation and frequent culture negativity. We present the first documented case of a pituitary abscess caused by C. canimorsus, highlighting the diagnostic value of 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) polymerase chain r

Capnocytophaga spp. are not often considered as a cause of perinatal infection. However, Capnocytophaga spp. are a commensal of the human oral cavity and can be opportunistic pathogens. The present case illustrates the ability of a species from the human oral cavity, C. sputigena, to cause an ascending infection of the genital tract in a healthy pregnant woman.

Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a common Gram-negative anaerobic bacterium from the oral flora of dogs, typically transmitted to humans by dog bites. We report a case of C. canimorsus meningitis where there was (on presentation) no apparent predisposing risk factor and in whom we used 16S rRNA PCR gene sequencing to identify the pathogen quickly and to switch to appropriate antibiotic therapy. Physicians should be aware of potential C. canimorsus meningitis if conventional cerebrospinal fluid bacterial culture is negative but Gram staining identifies bacteria, especially in patients with a recent

Infection with Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a rare, but potentially a life-threatening condition, which can cause sepsis, meningitis and endocarditis, as portrayed in this case report. Patients can typically report dog bites up to a week before symptoms of infection and medical assessment, but by then, their symptoms of local irritation may no longer be present. Thus, these patients might not mention this in their history. Awareness of Capnocytophaga infection among doctors is vital, as early recognition improves outcome.

We present the case of a 59-year-old immunocompetent female with a mild cough, fever, and rash. She was diagnosed with mild pneumonitis caused by Capnocytophaga canimorsus, with no history of dog bites. An indolent clinical course with transmission via canine face licking in immunocompetent individuals is a rare occurrence according to the literature. The diagnosis was made on positive blood cultures and polymerase chain reaction, following which the patient was treated with beta-lactam antibiotics. C. canimorsus is a gram-negative bacterium found in the saliva of dogs and cats. The incidence

Bacteria belonging to the genus Capnocytophaga are thin, capnophilic, Gram-negative bacilli with tapered ends that include nine species that are isolated from the mouth of humans and animals and, from a phylogenetical perspective, they belong to the family Flavobacteriaceae. Two more species, namely C. endodontalis and C. stomatis have been recovered from a periapical abscess and human and animal infections, respectively. Capnocytophaga spp. can cause serious and potentially life-threatening infections in humans, such as bacteremia and meningitis, most commonly in the context of penetrating tr

Patients with asplenia are prone to overwhelming infections due to encapsulated organisms. We report a 62-year-old man presenting with fever and weakness. His medical history was significant for splenectomy and owning a dog as pet. The patient on examination had evidence of animal bite and scratch marks on his lower extremity and developed dry gangrene of multiple digits of his upper extremity soon after admission. The patient's initial blood cultures were positive for Gram-negative rods, but no organism was identified. Capnocytophaga canimorsus was the suspected organism and the patient's ant

Retrospective review of isolates of Capnocytophaga, a genus of capnophilic gram-negative bacilli, referred to the Massachusetts State Laboratory Institute in Boston revealed 31 patients with infection due to Capnocytophaga, 16 in nonimmunocompromised hosts. These infections included empyema (three patients), lung abscess (one), sinusitis (one), conjunctivitis (three), subphrenic abscess (one), wound (three), osteomyelitis (one), and bacteremia (three). Two of the wound infections were closed-fist injuries involving bone or soft tissue. Capnocytophaga was frequently isolated as part of a polymi

INTRODUCTION: Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a fusiform and filamentous gram-negative rod, part of the normal oral flora of dogs and cause rare human febrile acute meningitis, usually severe but curable.
OBSERVATION: A sixty years old man presented a severe acute meningitis with fever and confusion. CSF show 4,000 cells/mm3 with 83% neutrophilis, increased protein level (5,02 g/L), very low glucose and positive Gram stain result. The patient fully and quickly recovered with antibiotherapy for 22 days. Bacteriological diagnosis was made by genomic study from CSF culture. The patient has a close

Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a gram-negative bacterium commonly found in the saliva of dogs and cats. Despite the frequency of animal bites, infection with Capnocytophaga species is rare, and severe infections are usually associated with underlying risk factors, such as alcohol use disorder, asplenia, or immunosuppression. We describe a case of a man who presented with a purpuric rash, lower extremity edema, and acute renal failure and was found to have tricuspid valve endocarditis and infection-associated glomerulonephritis due to C. canimorsus. Despite treatment with cefepime, the vegetation

Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a rare cause of serious infections with a high mortality of 10% to 30%. It is usually found in the oral cavity of cats and dogs and can cause severe sepsis in immunocompromised patients. An 81-year-old female Caucasian patient presented with C. canimorsus sepsis after a dog bite in her finger three days before presentation to our emergency department. She initially was presented to us with sepsis, thrombopenia, and schistocytes in her laboratory findings, suggesting the differential diagnoses of the multiple subtypes of thrombotic microangiopathy. She was admitted

Background. Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a fastidious, slow-growing, Gram-negative rod that is a commensal bacterium in normal gingival flora of canine and feline species. Infection with the organism may cause disease ranging from flu-like symptoms to disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), fulminant sepsis, meningitis, and endocarditis with an overall fatality rate of 6-26%. Risk factors for infection from C. canimorsus include immunosuppression, alcoholism, and asplenia. Case Presentation. We describe an unusual case with a relatively indolent clinical course and an urticarial exanthem

BACKGROUND: Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a gram-negative bacterium and an oral commensal in dogs and cats, but occasionally causes serious infections in humans. Septicemia is one of the most fulminant forms, but diagnosis of C. canimorsus infection is often difficult mainly because of its very slow growth. C. canimorsus infective endocarditis (IE) is rare and is poorly understood. Since quite a few strains produce β-lactamase, antimicrobial susceptibility is pivotal information for adequate treatment. We herein report a case with C. canimorsus IE and the results of drug susceptibility test.

BACKGROUND Capnocytophaga ochracea is a gram-negative anaerobic organism commonly found in human oral flora. It is characteristically sensitive to beta-lactams and resistant to aminoglycosides. CASE REPORT A 23-year-old woman presented with lower abdominal pain and was admitted for premature labor at 24-weeks of gestation. At presentation, the cervix was closed and the membrane was intact; however, contractions continued, the membrane subsequently ruptured before receiving any steroids or magnesium, and the mother gave birth to a 540-gram female baby. At birth, Apgar scores were 1 at 5 minutes

A 49-year-old woman with a 15-year history of HIV-hepatitis C virus coinfection had aortic valve and ascending aorta replacement in 2007. She presented with abdominal pain, episodic diarrhea, and profuse sweating in 2010. Thoracoabdominal positron emission tomography-computed tomography finally suggested infectious aortitis, a diagnosis confirmed by a blood culture positive for Capnocytophaga canimorsus.

Intra-amniotic infection is often the cause of a second-trimester abortion. The bacterial species involved include bacteria with low pathogenicity like Ureaplasma urealyticum and various Mycoplasma species. In this case we describe an intra-amniotic infection caused by Capnocytophaga sputigena, often found in the normal bacterial flora of the oral cavity, but not in the vagina. Oral sex during pregnancy was the most probable source of the infection. The aborted fetus showed signs of pneumonia upon histologic examination. The bacterial species was identified using broad-spectrum 16S rDNA polyme
