A pesticide series of 36 substances was patch tested in 652 subjects to establish the optimal test concentration, and the frequency of irritant and allergic reactions. Allergic reactions to fungicides were found in 46: thiophthalimides (captan, folpet and difolatan) were the most common. Irritant and allergic reactions to other pesticides (insecticides, herbicides, etc.) were rare. Sensitivity to pesticides was significant in patients who work, or have worked on the land. Cross sensitivity to bisdithiocarbamates or thiophthalimides is possible.

In this work, a simple and low-cost method based on matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) and gas chromatography to determine eight multi-class pesticides such as vinclozolin, dichlofluanid, penconazol, captan, quinoxyfen, fluquinconazol, boscalid, and pyraclostrobin in grapes is described. Fungicide residues were identified and quantified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in selected ion monitoring mode (GC-MS, SIM). The experimental variables that affect the MSPD method, such as the amount of solid phase, solvent nature and elution volume were optimized using an experimental design.

Of 50 strains ofB. japonicum, 64%, 44% and 54% were resistant to the fungicides captan, pentachloronitrobenzene and tetramethylthiuram disulphate, respectively, at concentrations above those recommended for treatment of soybeans. 100% and 84% of the strains were resistant to the herbicides trifluralin and metribuzin, respectively, also at concentrations above those recommended for soybeans. No strain was resistant to alachlor above 3.5 μg/ml but 40% were sensitive to 2.5 μg/ml, these being, respectively, the maximum and minimum concentrations recommended for soybeans.

The effect of two herbicides (paraquat and 2,4-dichlorophenoxybutyric acid) and two fungicides (mancozeb and captafol) was studied on the growth of Flagellospora penicillioides, Lunulospora curvula and Phalangispora constricta using the poisoned-food technique. The pesticides did not produce any inhibition of growth at concentrations up to 5 mg/l. The required concentration to bring about total inhibition of growth varied among the chemicals and the cultures. The herbicides produced a slight enhancement of culture growth at concentrations ranging from 1 to 25 mg/l.

Captafol is a common cause of dermatitis amongst workers in the timber industry. In a survey of 14 timber treatment plants 23% of 133 workers exposed to captafol gave a history suggestive of occupationally induced dermatitis. Although allergic dermatitis can occur, irritant dermatitis is far more common. Attention to plant and personal hygiene will reduce the prevalence of captafol dermatitis significantly. Recommendations on how to achieve this are made. "The ultimate end...is not knowledge, but action. To be half right on time may be more important than to obtain the whole truth too late."
