All the anomalous reactions secondary to food ingestion are defined as 'adverse reactions to food'. In 1995 the European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology suggested a classification on the basis of the responsible pathogenetic mechanism; according to this classification, non-toxic reactions can be divided into 'food allergies' when they recognize immunological mechanisms, and 'food intolerances' when there are no immunological implications. The diagnostic approach to adverse reactions to food is based on accurate clinical history and objective examination, and further execution of

The heritable diseases of mucopolysaccharide metabolism have undergone reclassification during the past several years as a result of advances in knowledge. Recognition of clinical, genetic and biochemical differences has made it possible to delineate six types of mucopolysaccharidosis. All types are characterized by excessive excretion of one or more acid mucopolysaccharides in the urine. The underlying defect is not known at present, but recent investigations have suggested possible defects in protein binding and increased biosynthesis and storage of the various mucopolysaccharides. Treatment

From Sir Archibald Garrod's initial description of the tetrad of albinism, alkaptonuria, cystinuria, and pentosuria to today, the field of medicine dedicated to inborn errors of metabolism has evolved from disease identification and mechanistic discovery to the development of therapies designed to subvert biochemical defects. In this review, we highlight major milestones in the treatment and diagnosis of inborn errors of metabolism, starting with dietary therapy for phenylketonuria in the 1950s and 1960s, and ending with current approaches in genetic manipulation.

During the last decade, examinations of skin biopsies have gained increasing importance in the search for a better understanding and facilitated diagnosis of metabolic storage diseases. In addition to biochemical and tissue culture techniques, light- and electron-microscopic investigations have been recommended in a number of such disorders (1-6). There are, however, a large number of different and inhomogeneous conditions to be identified in this group. At present, approximately 300 diseases can be identified as inborn errors of metabolism by the determination of a biochemically well-establis

As patients with inborn errors of metabolism survive longer, understanding of potential medical and psychiatric complications adolescence and adulthood has increased. In general, detailed therapeutic guidelines for specific metabolic disorders are not available, and medical management must be tailored to the individual patient. Close interaction between the biochemical genetics clinic staff, primary care physician, mental health professional, and other specialists is necessary to formulate an integrated care plan. The education of the patient and family is a critical function of the biochemica
