Photosynthetic carbon reduction and carbon oxidation cycles are the main electron sinks for photosystem II activity during a mild drought.

Stomatal closure can explain the inhibition of net CO2 uptake by a leaf subjected to a mild drought: the photosynthetic apparatus appears resistant to lack of water. Changes in both the water content of leaves maintained in a constant environment and the ambient CO2 molar fraction during measurements on well-hydrated leaves lead to similar effects on net CO2 uptake and whole chain electron transport as estimated by leaf chlorophyll fluorescence measurements. In particular, it is shown that photosystem II (PSII) functioning and its regulation are not qualitatively changed during desiccation and

Rhizosphere bacterial carbon turnover is higher in nucleic acids than membrane lipids: implications for understanding soil carbon cycling.

Using a pulse chase (13)CO2 plant labeling experiment we compared the flow of plant carbon into macromolecular fractions of rhizosphere soil microorganisms. Time dependent (13)C dilution patterns in microbial cellular fractions were used to calculate their turnover time. The turnover times of microbial biomolecules were found to vary: microbial RNA (19 h) and DNA (30 h) turned over fastest followed by chloroform fumigation extraction-derived soluble cell lysis products (14 days), while phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) had the slowest turnover (42 days). PLFA/NLFA (13)C analyses suggest that bo

Effect of microplastics on carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycle in farmland soil: A meta-analysis.

Farmland soil is a major sink for microplastics (MPs). Despite recognized potential impacts on soil ecosystems, comprehensive assessments of MPs' effects on carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) cycling in agricultural soils are limited. Data from 102 peer-reviewed studies were analyzed to elucidate the effects of MPs exposure on the C, N, and P cycles in soil. Results showed increased concentrations of soil organic carbon (SOC), dissolved organic carbon, microbial biomass carbon, and microbial biomass nitrogen, accompanied by elevated emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), a

Reduced life cycle climate impact from manure through catalytic methane conversion and carbon dioxide removal.

Agri-food systems constitute around one-third of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with roughly half consisting of non-CO2 GHGs, mainly methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). Methods and technologies to mitigate non-CO2 GHGs are currently limited, which is a reason for agriculture being categorised as a hard-to-abate sector. This study examines mitigation of GHG emissions from manure storage headspace through oxidisation of CH4 emissions at low concentrations, using a thermal catalytic process with and without subsequent CO2 capture and storage (CCS). The technology is studied using a com

Comparative Technoeconomic Analysis and Life Cycle Assessment of Emerging Reactive Carbon Capture-to-Methanol Pathways.

Our group recently developed dual-function materials (DFMs) and reactive carbon capture (RCC) processes for the selective production of methanol (MeOH) or CO, offering two novel and unique pathways for MeOH production. This study conducted a comparative techno-economic analysis (TEA) of the two RCC pathways from exhaust CO2: 1) a "Direct RCC-to-MeOH" pathway and 2) an "Indirect RCC-to-CO" pathway followed by MeOH synthesis. The "Direct RCC-to-MeOH" pathway produced a lower levelized cost of MeOH (LCOM) at $0.78/kg, compared to $0.84/kg for the "Indirect RCC-to-CO" pathway. The key difference i

Metagenomics reveals the effect of long-term fertilization on carbon cycle in the maize rhizosphere.

Long-term fertilization can result in the changes in carbon (C) cycle in the maize rhizosphere soil. However, there have been few reports on the impacts of microbial regulatory mechanisms on the C cycle in soil. In the study, we analyzed the response of functional genes that regulate the C fixation, decomposition and methane (CH4) metabolism in maize rhizosphere soil to different fertilization treatments using metagenomics analysis. As the dominant C fixation pathway in maize rhizosphere soil, the abundance of the functional genes regulating the reductive citrate cycle (rTCA cycle) including k

PeGLK1-1 Enhances Photosynthesis by Promoting Carbon Fixation Capacity of the Calvin Cycle in Bamboo.

The greenhouse effect, primarily driven by CO2 is changing the global climate and threatening ecosystem and human sustainability. Bamboo plays an integral role in mitigating climate change with its excellent photosynthetic carbon fixation capacity. The Golden2-like (GLK) transcription factor is a critical regulator of photosynthesis. In this study, we identified four GLK members in moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis), among which PeGLK1-1 functioned as a principal regulator of photosynthesis. Overexpressing PeGLK1-1 significantly enhanced the carbon fixation capacity of transgenic rice under el

Dominant Effect of Ecological Restoration on Microbial Carbon Cycle in Plant Rhizosphere of Mining Areas.

Rhizosphere microorganisms play critical roles in biogeochemical processes including carbon cycling; however, their linkages to carbon-cycling functions under distinct mine restoration approaches remain unclear. In this study, we compared natural and artificial vegetation restoration via metagenomic sequencing to characterize rhizosphere microbial communities and carbon-cycling functional genes. Artificial restoration (AR) decreased soil electrical conductivity (EC) and salt content (SC) while increasing total phosphorus and available phosphorus by 12.33% and 16.44%, respectively. AR also elev

One-carbon fixation via the synthetic reductive glycine pathway exceeds yield of the Calvin cycle.

One-carbon feedstocks such as formate could be promising renewable substrates for sustainable microbial production of food, fuels and chemicals. Here we replace the native energy-inefficient Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle in Cupriavidus necator with the more energy-efficient reductive glycine pathway for growth on formate and CO2. In chemostats, our engineered strain reached a 17% higher biomass yield than the wild type and a yield higher than any natural formatotroph using the Calvin cycle. This shows the potential of synthetic metabolism to realize sustainable, bio-based production.

3D printed bio-ceramic loaded PEGDA/vitreous carbon composite: Fabrication, characterization, and life cycle assessment.

Stereolithography (SLA) is gaining vast popularity in the development of three-dimensional parts with customized materials for tissue engineering applications. Consequently, developing customized materials like bio-composites (bio-polymers and bio-ceramics) is the basic pillar that meets the application requirement. Photo-crosslinkable poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) has outstanding biocompatibility and biophysical properties for tissue engineering. But, because of its poor mechanical properties, its scope is limited to load-bearing applications. This research aims to enhance the mech

Carbohydrate-active enzymes of soil prophages enhance global carbon cycling potential.

Recent work suggests that soil-borne viruses play an important role in controlling carbon (C) cycling and stocks. However, the contribution of individual prophage (i.e., temperate phages residing within bacterial hosts during lysogenic cycle) to C degradation remains largely undocumented at global scale. Here, we generated a global gene catalog of prophage-encoded carbohydrate-active enzyme (pCAZymes), including 20,131 soil bacterial genomes, 3548 metagenomes, and 951 metatranscriptomes derived from pre-existing databases. The catalog includes 4708 pCAZymes associated with the degradation of l

Two sub-annual timescales and coupling modes for terrestrial water and carbon cycles.

To bridge the knowledge gap between (a) our (instantaneous-to-seasonal-scale) process understanding of plants and water and (b) our projections of long-term coupled feedbacks between the terrestrial water and carbon cycles, we must uncover what the dominant dynamics are linking fluxes of water and carbon. This study uses the simplest empirical dynamical systems models-two-dimensional linear models-and observation-based data from satellites, eddy covariance towers, weather stations, and machine-learning-derived products to determine the dominant sub-annual timescales coupling carbon uptake and

The role of the one-carbon cycle in the developmental origins of Type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Vitamin B12 deficiency is common in certain populations, such as in India, where there is also a rising prevalence of Type 2 diabetes, obesity and their complications. Human cohorts and animal models provide compelling data suggesting the role of the one-carbon cycle in modulating the risk of diabetes and adiposity via developmental programming. Early mechanistic studies in animals suggest that alterations to the cellular provision of methyl groups (via the one-carbon cycle) in early developmental life may disrupt DNA methylation and induce future adverse phenotypic changes. Furthermore, repla

The performance and efficiency of cycling with a carbon fiber eccentric chainring during incremental exercise.

AIM: The aim of this study was to compare cycling performance and efficiency of a carbon fiber eccentric chainring (EC) versus a metallic standard chainring (SC) during an incremental exercise. The main feature of EC was that crank-arm length changed as a function of the crank angle, being maximal during the pushing phase and minimal during the recovery one. Because of its design, cycling with EC was expected to develop higher torque during the downstroke, and lower torque during the upstroke, thus increasing mechanical efficiency and requiring lower cardioventilatory solicitation at submaxima

Influences of iron, manganese, and dissolved organic carbon on the hypolimnetic cycling of amended mercury.

The biogeochemical cycling of iron, manganese, sulfide, and dissolved organic carbon were investigated to provide information on the transport and removal processes that control the bioavailability of isotopic mercury amended to a lake. Lake profiles showed a similar trend of hypolimnetic enrichment of Fe, Mn, DOC, sulfide, and the lake spike ((202)Hg, purity 90.8%) and ambient of pools of total mercury (HgT) and methylmercury (MeHg). Hypolimnetic enrichment of Fe and Mn indicated that reductive mobilization occurred primarily at the sediment-water interface and that Fe and Mn oxides were abun

Human carbonic anhydrase I concentration in erythrocytes during pregnancy and the menstrual cycle.

Carbonic anhydrase I (HCAI) concentrations were measured in erythrocytes (RBC) taken from nine women at intervals throughout their pregnancies and from thirteen normal women during the menstrual cycle. No significant changes in RBC HCAI concentrations were found in any instance. Small changes which were found in RBC HCAI concentrations were within experimental error and did not correlate with any other measured parameter. Changes in RBC HCAI concentrations in six men over a four-week period were of similar order to that found in the thirteen normal women over a similar length of time.

Siderite and ferric oxyhydroxides imply interlinked carbon, iron, and halogen cycles on Mars.

Pure siderite [FeIICO3] was recently discovered in abundant quantities (4.8 to 10.5 wt.%) by the Curiosity rover at Gale crater, Mars. Diagenetic alteration of siderite likely caused the carbonate-sequestered CO2 to be released back into the atmosphere and consequently produced ferric [Fe(III)] oxyhydr(oxide) minerals. Here, using laboratory experimentation, we demonstrate that while closed system acid diagenesis-as proposed for Gale crater-is incapable of effective siderite alteration in Mars-relevant fluids, oxyhalogen compounds (chlorate and bromate) can weather siderite not only at acidic

Microbial Phosphite Oxidation and Its Potential Role in the Global Phosphorus and Carbon Cycles.

Phosphite [Formula: see text] is a highly soluble, reduced phosphorus compound that is often overlooked in biogeochemical analyses. Although the oxidation of phosphite to phosphate is a highly exergonic process (Eo'=-650mV), phosphite is kinetically stable and can account for 10-30% of the total dissolved P in various environments. There is also evidence that phosphite was more prevalent under the reducing conditions of the Archean period and may have been involved in the development of early life. Its role as a phosphorus source for a variety of extant microorganisms has been known since the

Effect of semi-permeable membrane coverage on carbon dioxide emissions during composting: Insights into carbon metabolism pathways, dominated by the tricarboxylic acid cycle.

The tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle is the main carbon metabolism pathway leading to carbon loss in the form of carbon dioxide (CO2). Research on the CO2 emission reduction mechanism based on the TCA cycle under different composting strategies is relatively lacking. This study investigated the effects of semi-permeable membrane coverage on CO2 emissions and pathways of carbon metabolism during three batches of large-scale dairy manure aerobic composting by using gas chromatography and high-throughput sequencing technologies. The results showed that the CO2 emission rate peaked at the initial st
