Effects of dissolved surfactants in carbonated water on swelling factor and interfacial tension under sub and supercritical conditions using synthetic resinous and asphaltenic oil.

In recent years, the application of gas injection, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2) dissolved in water, known as carbonated water (CW), has gained increasing attention. In this context, the current study is designed to examine the effect of CO2 dissolution in water under pressures ranging from 500 to 4500 psi, covering subcritical to supercritical conditions, and at temperatures between 25°C-65°C. Additionally, the synergistic effects of surfactants, namely dioctyl sulfosuccinate sodium salt (AOT) and sodium dodecyl polyoxyethylene ether sulfate (AES), were examined at concentrations ranging

Light-induced quantum friction of carbon nanotubes in water.

Friction slows down moving objects at both macroscopic and microscopic scales1. At the electronic level, quantum friction describes direct transfer of momentum between a liquid and the electrons of a solid2. Owing to its microscopic nature, this phenomenon remains experimentally challenging to capture3. Here we show that near-infrared fluorescent single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) exhibit light-induced quantum friction in water. It is measured by observing an excitation-power-dependent linear decrease of around 50% in the diffusion constants of functionalized SWCNTs in aqueous solution. T

Thresholds of Wetland Carbon Sink Regulation by Water Level.

Wetlands are vital carbon sinks and play a key role in climate regulation. However, climate change and human disturbances are altering wetland hydrology with water level fluctuations profoundly influencing carbon sequestration. While previous syntheses and modeling studies have suggested the existence of water level thresholds in wetland carbon dynamics, the mechanisms underlying these thresholds remain poorly understood, and field-based evidence is lacking. Here, we present results from a long-term field experiment across six water level treatments, ranging from 100 to 40 cm above the soil su

Peptide Bond Formation in Water Mediated by Carbon Disulfide.

Demonstrating plausible nonenzymatic polymerization mechanisms for prebiotic monomers represents a fundamental goal in prebiotic chemistry. While a great deal is now known about the potentially prebiotic synthesis of amino acids, our understanding of abiogenic polymerization processes to form polypeptides is less well developed. Here, we show that carbon disulfide (CS2), a component of volcanic emission and sulfide mineral weathering, and a widely used synthetic reagent and solvent, promotes peptide bond formation in modest yields (up to ∼20%) from α-amino acids under mild aqueous conditions.

Molecular simulations of carbon dioxide and water: cation solvation.

Proposed carbon dioxide sequestration scenarios in sedimentary reservoirs require investigation into the interactions between supercritical carbon dioxide, brines, and the mineral phases found in the basin and overlying caprock. Molecular simulations can help to understand the partitioning of metal cations between aqueous solutions and supercritical carbon dioxide where limited experimental data exist. In this effort, we used classical molecular dynamics simulations to compare the solvation of alkali and alkaline-earth metal cations in water and liquid CO(2) at 300 K by combining a flexible si

Carbon sinks associated with biological carbon pump in karst surface waters: Progress, challenges, and prospects.

The biological carbon pump (BCP) associated with aquatic photosynthesis in karst surface waters converts dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) into organic carbon. In the context of global climate change, BCP could be an important carbon sink mechanism, ultimately regulating atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and mitigating climate change. Because of the high DIC and pH, and low dissolved CO2 [CO2 (aq)], the hydrochemical characteristics of karst surface water bodies cause C limitation in BCP efficiency. The effect of CO2 fertilization on water bodies can promote autochthonous production, thereby cre

Water-Promoted Carbon-Carbon Bond Cleavage Employing a Reusable Fe Single-Atom Catalyst.

The development of methods for selective cleavage reactions of thermodynamically stable C-C/C=C bonds in a green manner is a challenging research field which is largely unexplored. Herein, we present a heterogeneous Fe-N-C catalyst with highly dispersed iron centers that allows for the oxidative C-C/C=C bond cleavage of amines, secondary alcohols, ketones, and olefins in the presence of air (O2 ) and water (H2 O). Mechanistic studies reveal the presence of water to be essential for the performance of the Fe-N-C system, boosting the product yield from <1 % to >90 %. Combined spectroscopic chara

Water oxidation couples to electrocatalytic hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds and unsaturated carbon-carbon bonds by nickel.

Artificial photosynthesis, an umbrella term, is a chemical process that biomimetics natural photosynthesis. In natural photosynthesis, electrons from the water-oxidation reaction are used for carbon dioxide reduction. Herein, we report the reducion of aldehydes and ketones to corresponding alcohols in a simple undivided cell. This reaction utilized inexpensive nickel foam electrodes (1 cm2) and LiClO4 (0.05 M) as a commercially accessible electrolyte in an aqueous medium. Under electrochemical conditions, a series of alcohols (21 examples) produces high selectivity in good yields (up to 100%).

Interfacial Water-Networks Regulate the Anodic Stability of Carbon Electrodes.

Carbon-based materials are widely used in modern electrochemical technologies, yet their susceptibility to oxidation at positive electrode potentials poses a durability challenge. While this degradation has commonly been addressed through modification of the carbon material itself, the interfacial chemistry that activates carbon oxidation remains poorly understood. Here, we show that the hydrogen-bonding (HB) network of interfacial water strongly influences anodic carbon stability. Operando differential electrochemical mass spectrometry combined with in situ attenuated total reflection surface

Field-nanoconfinement coupling enhanced water desalination in carbon nanotubes.

Desalination based on carbon nanomembranes offers high water permeance and salt rejection, making them promising for addressing global freshwater shortages and energy demands in reverse osmosis (RO) desalination. Enhancing ion rejection by modulating the energy barrier for ion transport through wide carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is a critical challenge for highly efficient desalination. We perform molecular dynamics simulations on water desalination using CNTs membranes, highlighting the key role of nanoconfinement coupled with an electric field. The results show that the electric field extends the

Synthesis of Aspirin at the Gas-Water Interface With Phenol and Carbon Dioxide.

We present a gas-water interfacial carboxylation of phenol into salicylic acid under ambient conditions, bypassing the high temperature and pressure required by the conventional Kolbe-Schmitt reaction. Phenol-containing microdroplets were sprayed with CO2 into a high-resolution mass spectrometer, where in situ analysis revealed a highly regioselective ortho-carboxylation pathway. To scale up the process, we transitioned from microdroplets to microbubbles, extending the gas-water contact time. Milligram-scale acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) was synthesized from 500 mL of 10 ppm aqueous phenol so

Carbon dioxide radical anion: A novel concept for water purification.

Contamination of water and wastewater by hazardous pollutants poses serious environmental and health concerns, demanding advanced remediation strategies. Although oxidative radicals are conventionally utilized, their limited efficacy in treating specific persistent pollutants highlights the urgent need for innovative reductive processes. This study reviews the carbon dioxide radical anion (CO2●-) as a novel advanced reduction process for pollutants removal in water and wastewater, with particular emphasis on the historical evolution and key milestones of CO2●- research, chemical attributes, de

Oxoanion-Mediated Stabilization of Carbonate Species at the Air/Water Interface.

The surface chemistry and reactivity of carbon dioxide at air/liquid interfaces, including inorganic carbonates, play a central role in various environmental processes. While carbonate/bicarbonate interfacial activity has been studied in simple solutions, the influence of technologically relevant oxoanions remains underexplored. Here, we report that orthovanadate induces strong sum frequency generation (SFG) activity of carbonate species through interfacial oxoanion pairing, enabling direct spectroscopic observation under ambient conditions. Concentration-dependent SFG measurements reveal two

Spontaneous Room-Temperature Polymerization of Carbon Disulfide in Water Microdroplets.

Water microdroplets have emerged as extraordinary reaction vessels in which ultrahigh electric fields at the air-water interface generate reactive radicals and hydrated electrons, enabling transformations inaccessible in bulk solution. However, microdroplet-induced free-radical polymerization has remained virtually unexplored. Here we demonstrate that aqueous microdroplets induce the rapid, room-temperature polymerization of carbon disulfide (CS2) into a poly(carbon sulfide) solid. The reaction consumes CS2 completely without catalysts at room temperature. Comprehensive characterization reveal

Catalytic Oxidation of Carbon-Halogen Bonds by Water with H2 Liberation.

The unprecedented catalytic oxidation of carbon-halogen bonds to carboxylic acids using water as the oxidant is disclosed. Compared to previous traditional oxidation reactions, this transformation avoids the use of sacrificial oxidants and liberates useful hydrogen gas as byproduct, presenting an efficient method. Catalyzed by an acridine-based PNP-Ru pincer complex, a series of primary aliphatic and benzylic halides were successfully converted into carboxylic acids in high yields. The oxidation of secondary halides, which yields ketones, was also accomplished efficiently. Moreover, the oxidat

Carbon-supported ZnO materials for sulfur capturing in supercritical water.

Sulfur (S) capturing materials working at supercritical water (SCW) conditions need to be designed and developed to overcome issues related with catalyst poisoning during the hydrothermal gasification of wet biomass, an efficient and sustainable technology for alternative fuels production. Sorbent materials of zinc oxide (ZnO) deposited on porous carbon (C) support were prepared by an innovative continuous flow SCW impregnation method. Their S-adsorption performance was tested under the same supercritical conditions in the presence of sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS), as model inorganic sulfur compo

Carbon dots for efficient detection of water content in organic solvents.

The trace amount of water in organic solvents can affect the progress of chemical reactions, which will adversely affect chemical production in many industries, resulting in a doubling of costs. In this work, carbon dots (CDs) with abundant polar groups were synthesized by a simple one-step hydrothermal method. The prepared CDs showed superior dispersibility and fluorescence performance compared to the CDs that have been reported for the detection of water content in organic solvents. It can realize the fluorescence detection of trace water in several water-soluble organic solvents such as N,N

Insights into the complete and partial photooxidation of black carbon in surface waters.

Increasing wildfire activity in the Alaskan Arctic may result in new sources of black carbon (BC) to arctic watersheds. Black carbon, primarily comprised of condensed aromatics, is one of the most chemically recalcitrant fractions of organic carbon. However, lateral transfer of particulate and dissolved BC from soils to sunlit surface waters is increasingly suggested to result in the photochemical mineralization of BC to CO₂. While sunlight can also partially photooxidize aromatic compounds in surface waters, producing compounds with a higher O/C than the parent compound, this degradation path

Effect of carbon tetrachloride on sonochemical decomposition of methyl orange in water.

Two types of sonicators were used for the sonochemical decomposition of methyl orange (MO) in the presence and absence of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4): One is a 45kHz ultrasonic cleaning bath (a low intensity sonicator) and the other is a 200kHz ultrasonic reactor (a high intensity sonicator). It was clearly confirmed that the rates of the sonochemical decomposition of MO increased with increasing the concentration of CCl4 in both sonicators. The enhancement effect of CCl4 was much higher in the high intensity sonicator than in the low intensity one: by the addition of 100ppm of CCl4, the decom
