Seven patients with verrucous carcinoma of the glottis treated by hemilaryngectomy are analyzed. The diagnostic criteria for this tumor are reviewed. Close cooperation between the clinician and pathologist is necessary for the correct diagnosis. The controversy regarding radiation therapy is discussed. Hemilaryngectomy is concluded to be a successful surgical modality for limited verrucous carcinoma of the larynx.

Cutaneous verrucous carcinoma is a low-grade and well-differentiated variant of squamous cell carcinoma. This rare neoplasm follows a seemingly indolent progression and exhibits a low metastatic potential. Photodynamic therapy relies on the selective intratumoral cell accumulation and photoactivation of a photosensitizer, leading to the generation of phototoxic compounds responsible for necrosis and apoptosis of the target cells. An 82-year-old man presenting with a large long-standing verrucous carcinoma on the leg was treated successfully by 6 photodynamic therapy sessions administered at we

Syringocystadenoma papilliferum (SP) commonly arises in conjunction with nevus sebaceous. Other less common lesions reported with SP include apocrine adenoma, condyloma acuminatum, hidradenoma papilliferum associated with hidrocystoma, poroma folliculare, and a single case ofverrucous carcinoma. We report the second case of verrucous carcinoma in conjunction with SP.

There are many reported cases of squamous carcinoma complicating hidradenitis suppurativa, but only one previous mention of verrucous carcinoma in this setting. We describe a case of verrucous carcinoma arising in hidradenitis suppurativa of the anal margin in a non-immunosuppressed man. This is the second report of verrucous carcinoma arising in a lesion of hidradenitis suppurativa. Although hidradenitis suppurativa can involve multiple intertriginous sites, malignant degeneration occurs mostly in the anogenital region. This suggests a role for a regional factor which, when combined with chro

Verrucous carcinoma is an unusual, non-metastasizing, distinct variant of a well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. Multiple biopsies are frequently necessary to establish its diagnosis. Seven of 10 patients treated with irradiation showed no evidence of anaplastic transformation. A high recurrence rate in tumors of the oral cavity treated with either irradiation or surgery alone is noted. Extensive lesions in this area may benefit from combined therapy. A good response to radiotherapy with a low recurrence rate in small laryngeal lesions is recognized. Irradiation should be considered in

A 51-year-old patient presented with aggregated papules and with a central, partly erosive plaque on the left lower leg. Histological examination revealed hypertrophic lichen planus peripherally and a verrucous carcinoma within the centre. The lesion was removed surgically. Shortly after wards an atrophic lichen planus developed exclusively within the skin graft, which was effectively treated with topical steroid cream. The patient remained disease-free for 2 years. The literature relating to malignant transformation of cutaneous lichen planus was reviewed. In most cases, as in the present one

OBJECTIVE: Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia is classified as a potentially malignant disorder because of its high rate of malignant transformation. PVL progresses in a series of clinical stages where the early stage represents multiple, multifocal leukoplakias with a high recurrence rate. The intermediate and late stages are clinically exophytic lesion, diagnosed microscopically as verrucous hyperplasia that often progresses into verrucous carcinoma and/or squamous cell carcinoma. There is no single histologic definition and the diagnosis is retrospective following observed progression of t

BACKGROUND: Verrucous carcinoma of the vulva in a patient with Turner syndrome is extremely rare.
CASE REPORT: A 7.5 x 4 cm exophytic tumor of the vulva with a palpable ipsilateral groin lymph node developed in a 41-year-old single nulligravid Japanese woman with short stature and a history of primary amenorrhea. Analysis of karyotype demonstrated mosaic Turner syndrome. She underwent total deep vulvectomy with en-block inguinal femoral lymphadenectomy. Histopathological finding of the extirpated specimen demonstrated verrucous carcinoma with clear margins and the absence of metastasis to the

Vulvar cancer accounts for less than 1% of malignancies in women. Verrucous carcinoma of the vulva is a rare histological variation, comprising less than 1% of vulvar cancer cases. Although it is characterized as being locally invasive, the condition is not associated with metastatic spreading. Lesions present in the form of a verrucous, ulcerated, and bleeding tumor that can reach large dimensions. This type of tumor can be mistaken for condylomata, both macroscopically and microscopically. We report the case of an 81-year-old patient with a large vulvar tumor presented for eight years, initi

We report a case of verrucous carcinoma of the penis. A 62-year-old man, who presented with penile swelling and pain, was referred to our hospital. Although, penile tumor biopsy revealed no evidence of malignancy, the patient presented with penile swelling and discharge. The penis was surgically resected and urinary diversion was performed. The pathological examination of the resected glans revealed verrucous carcinoma of penis. Furthermore, in situ hybridization revealed human papilloma virus (HPV) infection. This clearly showed that the verrucous carcinoma of the penis resulted from the HPV

AIM: To evaluate the coexistence of verrucous and squamous carcinoma of the vulva and to assess the clinical course, survival and rate of recurrent disease of these patients.
METHODS: The records of 17 patients who were diagnosed with verrucous carcinoma of the vulva over a 12-year period were studied retrospectively. Presence of genuine verrucous carcinoma or coexistence of verrucous and squamous carcinoma of the vulva on vulvar biopsies, results of histopathological assessment of final vulva and inguino-femoral node specimens and histological evaluation of recurrent disease specimens were t

Verrucous carcinoma (VC) of the esophagus is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma and only 20 cases have so far been reported in the international literature. The neoplasm is usually highly differentiated, presents a slow growth pattern with invasion of surrounding organs rather than blood-borne metastases. Recently, a causative role of human papillomavirus (HPV) has been hypothesized. The case of a patient affected with locally advanced VC of the esophagus and treated by means of local antiviral therapy is reported. A 41-year-old male patient was admitted to our institution for persisten

OBJECTIVE: Verrucous carcinoma is a rare form of vulvar squamous carcinoma, with particular clinical presentation and histological description. We analyze the specificity of the treatment of this form.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed the records of 8 patients treated in our hospital between 1995 and 2001. In the absence of an associated lesion, the treatment was partial vulvectomy without lymph node dissection. A close follow-up was then organized.
RESULTS: Mean age was 76 years (range 54 to 92). In 7 out of the 8 cases we found an associated lesion: invasive squamous carcinoma, VIN III o
