BACKGROUND: Nuclear imaging modalities can quantify cardiac volumes and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), but systematic differences between techniques complicate direct comparison. Phantom-based evaluations comparing myocardial perfusion and blood-pool methods are scarce.
METHODS: We used a dynamic two-compartment cardiac phantom (myocardium and left ventricular [LV] lumen) with adjustable stroke volume and heart rate. Static and gated acquisitions were performed on cadmium-zinc-telluride equilibrium radionuclilde angiocardiography (CZT-ERNA) and gated positron emission tomography m

BACKGROUND: Cardiac radioablation is a noninvasive stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) technique to treat patients with refractory ventricular tachycardia (VT) by delivering a single high-dose fraction to the VT isthmus. Cardiorespiratory motion induces position uncertainties resulting in decreased dose conformality. Electocardiograms (ECG) are typically used during cardiac MRI (CMR) to acquire images in a predefined cardiac phase, thus mitigating cardiac motion during image acquisition.
PURPOSE: We demonstrate real-time cardiac physiology-based radiotherapy beam gating within a preset

Cardiac diffusion weighted-magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) has slowly developed due to its technical difficulties. However, this limitation could be overcome by advanced techniques, including a stimulated echo technique and a gradient moment nulling technique. This study aimed to develop and validate a high-order DWI sequence, using echo-planar imaging (EPI) and second-order motion-compensated (M012) diffusion gradient applied to cardiac imaging in small-sized animals with fast heart and respiratory rates, and to investigate the feasibility of cardiac DWI, diagnosing acute myocardial injury i

The usefulness of coronal and sagittal sections of the cardiovascular system by magnetic resonance imaging was evaluated. Coronal, sagittal and transverse spin echo scans using ECG-non-gating and gating during systole and diastole were performed for five normal volunteers, 91 with heart diseases (25 valvular disease, 28 ischemic heart disease, 14 cardiomyopathies, 14 congenital malformations, four pericardial diseases, and six others) and 32 patients with aortic abnormalities (17 aneurysms, 10 dissections and five others) using a 2.5 KGauss unit. Cardiac gating necessitated six to eight min pe

Acute aortic syndromes (AAS) encompass a spectrum of emergencies. These include those non-traumatic disease entities of the aorta namely, penetrating atherosclerotic ulcer, intramural haematoma, dissection and aneurysm rupture. The various types of AAS cannot be reliably differentiated on clinical grounds alone. Acute thoracic aortic injury is usually included in this group even though clinical presentation is different, i.e., in the context of trauma, the imaging features are very similar. Differentiation of AAS from acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is important, however, it must be remembered t

Congenital heart diseases affect 1% of all live births in the general population. The prognosis of these children is increasingly improving due to advances in medical care and surgical treatment. Imaging is also evolving rapidly to assess accurately complex cardiac anomalies prenatally and postnatally. Transthoracic echocardiography is the gold-standard imaging technique to diagnose and follow-up children with congenital heart disease. Cardiac computed tomography imaging plays a key role in the diagnosis of children with congenital heart defects that require intervention, due to its high tempo

Over the last 2 years, multi-detector row computed tomographic (MDCT) cardiac imaging has continued to rapidly develop and evolve from the experimental research setting to become a useful clinical tool. The increasing availability of MDCT presents today's clinicians with an additional non-invasive diagnostic cardiac imaging method, in particular for the coronary arteries. With the advent and increasing clinical use of 16-detector row machines, and now with the imminent clinical emergence of 64-channel machines, the improvements in spatial and temporal resolution and sophisticated ECG-gating ar

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a completely noninvasive technique for the evaluation of the cardiovascular system. With a multi-section-technique and the spin echo pulse sequence the entire heart can be examined within 10 minutes. All cardiac MR studies were performed with electrocardiographic (ECG) gating to obtain adequate resolution of the cardiac structures. With this technique patients with congenital and acquired heart diseases, with thoracic aortic aneurysms, with mediastinal and pulmonary mass lesions, with central pulmonary embolism and with pulmonary arterial hypertension were s

OBJECTIVE: MR coronary angiography is most often performed using two-dimensional techniques. Although three-dimensional (3D) acquisitions do have important advantages, they take too long for a single breath-hold and are thus susceptible to respiratory motion artifacts. The purpose of this study was to investigate the accuracy of a unique respiratory-gated 3D MR angiographic technique in identifying the proximal coronary arteries in patients suspected of having coronary artery disease. In addition, we investigated the capability of this technique to detect proximal stenoses.

To visualize the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) throughout the ventricles and subarachnoid space, measure mean and maximum CSF velocities, and quantitate CSF flow through the aqueduct of Sylvius, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging was performed with a sagittal technique that is flow-sensitive in the craniocaudal direction (along the readout axis) and a high-resolution axial technique sensitive to through-plane flow in three healthy subjects and 19 patients with known or suspected disorders of the CSF circulation. In both techniques, retrospective cardiac gating was used to cover the complete c

Phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging techniques can be used to evaluate the to-and-fro motion of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) throughout the ventricles and subarachnoid space of the brain and spine. This CSF motion is due to transmitted cardiac pulsations from systolic expansion of the cerebral hemispheres. To cover the entire cardiac cycle, retrospective cardiac gating (rather than electrocardiographic triggering) must be used. Using this technique, it is possible to quantify CSF motion over a cardiac cycle and to distinguish normal aqueductal CSF "stroke volumes" from those seen in atrophy

Respiratory gating with navigator echo is a recent technique to detect diaphragm position in 3D magnetic resonance (MR) coronary angiography. The purpose of our study was to image proximal coronary arteries and to detect significant stenoses in patients with coronary artery diseases and to compare with contrast enhanced angiography results. Twenty patients with coronary artery diseases who were referred for conventional angiography underwent magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). Three-dimensional gradient echo volumes were acquired using cardiac and respiratory gating and fat suppression. Usin

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a completely noninvasive modality that has shown significant promise for the evaluation of the cardiovascular system. Our imaging technique employed electrocardiographic (ECG) gating, which resulted in well-resolved images of the cardiac structures. Patients and animals with a variety of cardiovascular abnormalities were also assessed with this technique; the abnormalities included acute and remote myocardial infarctions and their sequelae, atherosclerotic plaques, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, pericardial diseases, and aneurysms. The diagnostic utility of MR

The role of two-dimensional echocardiography in the management of any congenital cardiovascular anomaly depends on the lesion's natural history and surgical alternatives. Diagnostic assessment of subaortic stenosis and postoperative follow-up of Fontan and Mustard/Senning procedures and tetralogy of Fallot reconstruction illustrate the application of two-dimensional echocardiography to the management of these problems in the older child. Two-dimensional echocardiography displays the static anatomic as well as dynamic functional sequels of left ventricular outflow obstruction. Detailed anatomic

PURPOSE: To develop a motion correction for Positron-Emission-Tomography (PET) using simultaneously acquired magnetic-resonance (MR) images within 90 s.
METHODS: A 90 s MR acquisition allows the generation of a cardiac and respiratory motion model of the body trunk. Thereafter, further diagnostic MR sequences can be recorded during the PET examination without any limitation. To provide full PET scan time coverage, a sensor fusion approach maps external motion signals (respiratory belt, ECG-derived respiration signal) to a complete surrogate signal on which the retrospective data binning is pe

OBJECTIVE: MR imaging and cineangiography were compared in the evaluation of central pulmonary arteries in patients with obstructive lesions of the right ventricular outflow tract.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Prospectively, we obtained multiplanar spin-echo cardiac-gated MR images and cineangiograms in 29 patients who had obstructive lesions of the right ventricular outflow tract (31 examinations). Blinded first observers evaluated the presence, size, confluence, and stenoses of the pulmonary artery and the presence of aortopulmonic collaterals. Blinded second observers evaluated the presence and s

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) imaging with X-rays are crucial diagnostic techniques in medicine, especially in oncology for evaluating the response to treatment. Body movement causes image blurring and synchronized gating to the respiratory and cardiac cycles is required. Degradation of MRI and CT imaging by the presence of metal in electronic respiratory sensors has limited their use, with a preference for pressure balloons for detecting respiration, but these are cumbersome and insensitive. Here, graphene's role is studied as an electromagnetically transparent

The majority of the imaging techniques in cardiology could be applied in rheumatic diseases (RDs), such as echocardiography, single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), radionuclide ventriculography, angiography, cardiovascular MRI and CT. Inflammatory pericardial involvement is the most common cardiac manifestation in various forms of RD. Echocardiography is the gold standard for diagnosis of pericardial abnormalities, demonstrating location and amount of pericardial effusion. Cardiac MRI and CT can be used to assess the features of pericardial effusions and pericardial structures. In

Acquired pulmonary venous disease is predominantly detected on postablation imaging for atrial fibrillation, but may also be encountered incidentally or during evaluation for acute cardiopulmonary events. These entities require a high index of suspicion, as they involve subtle findings in an often-overlooked region. Moreover, recognition of associated findings may be particularly difficult on nongated imaging, which is prone to artifacts. Cardiac-gated CT and magnetic resonance imaging remain the primary imaging modalities, though echocardiography and diagnostic catheterization may contribute

OBJECTIVE: Cardiac gating, synchronizing medical scans with cardiac activity, is widely used to make quantitative measurements of physiological events and to obtain high-quality scans free of pulsatile artefacts. This can provide important information for disease diagnosis, targeted control of medical microrobots, etc. The current work proposes a low-cost, self-adaptive, MRI-compatible cardiac gating system.
METHOD: The system and its processing algorithm, based on the monitoring and analysis of blood pressure waveforms, are proposed. The system is tested in an in vitro experiment and two liv
